One of the Best By Catherine Anderson....

Cheyenne Amber is thought by some to be one of Catherine Anderson's best books and I have to agree. It's a tender love story that follows two very unlikely people on a journey of discovery as they search for the heroine's kidnapped son.

The story begins when Tristan Cheney, a heartless and greedy man, tries to trade his young wife to an outlaw to pay off a gambling debt. Alone in the Colorado wilderness, Laura Cheney has just given birth to her son when the band of murderous outlaws come searching for her. Luckily she is away from the house at the time, but they are determined to get her one way or the other, so the outlaws take her newborn son to trade him to the Cheyenne, hoping that Laura will come searching for him. Frantic and desperate, Laura heads to Denver in search of help.

Deke Sheridan is a white man who was raised by the Cheyenne and is known as a fast gun and a skilled tracker. When Laura finds him and asks for his help, his initial response is to say no. But when he learns that Laura is desperate, alone and that her baby is only 3 days old, he knows he can't refuse her. So the two set off on a long and difficult journey where a Boston bred lady and a cowboy loner learn to depend on one another despite their differences. Together they will face illness, outlaws and the constant fear that they won't find the baby in time.

Cheyenne Amber is a timeless story about two very different people who learn to look beyond what they know to discover what's real and what truly matters. It's a strong plot with appealing characters and realistic dialogue that pulls you in and has you hoping that Deke and Laura will realize that when all is said and done, love is all that really matters. I highly recommend this historical romance by the ever talented Catherine Anderson.

I love Catherine Anderson and especially her books about Indians and set in the 1800's and early nineteen hundred's. This book was super fun and I had a hard time putting it down. This book was laugh out loud in places, and sad in other places. The characters were great. All in all, a wonderful book. I look forward to whatever else she writes.

About the Author
Andrew F. Siegel holds the Grant I. Butterbaugh Professorship in Quantitative Methods and Finance at the Michael G. Foster School of Business, University of Washington, Seattle, and is also Adjunct Professor in the Department of Statistics. His Ph.D. is in statistics from Stanford University (1977). Before settling in Seattle, he held teaching and/ or research positions at Harvard University, the University of Wisconsin, the RAND Corporation, the Smithsonian Institution, and Princeton University. He has taught statistics at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and earned seven teaching awards in 2015 and 2016. The interest-rate model he developed with Charles Nelson (the Nelson-Siegel Model) is in use at central banks around the world. His work has been translated into Chinese and Russian. His articles have appeared in many publications, including the Journal of the American Statistical Association, the Encyclopedia of Statistical Sciences, the American Statistician, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Nature, the American Mathematical Monthly, the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, the Annals of Statistics, the Annals of Probability, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Journal on Scientific and Statistical Computing, Statistics in Medicine, Biometrika, Biometrics, Statistical Applications in Genetics and Molecular Biology, Mathematical Finance, Contemporary Accounting Research, the Journal of Finance, and the Journal of Applied Probability.

Instead of a "mean" they should call it a "nice"

I had the privelege of taking an MBA level course from Andy Siegel. The style of the text reflects the simply, user-friendly way he communicates in class. Not having taken a stats class before, I was happy to find a professor who could take a dry, complex subject and make it interesting and relatively painless. More professors should use this text!

Good and gentle introduction to statistics

Prof. Siegel's book is a great introductory text for business graduates with little prior exposure to statistics. The text covers many of the basic topics in statistics and ties them nicely to real world cases and problems.

The book starts with a description of the basic constructs of statistics - data sets, distributions, and variability. IT follows with an introduction to probability and covers random variables. The text continues to cover statistical inference, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing. Finally the book gets to regression and time series analysis and demonstrates several applications of the techniques covered.

The book comes with a CD that contains lecture presentations (very useful), all the data sets in the books (saves you typing), and an excel add-on called StatPad that provides many useful statistical tools.

Overall I think that this text is a good choice for MBA students and business professionals with little background in statistics. It is very user-friendly and is well grounded in business.

Simplest Stats Book I've used till date

I don't have a great extensive experience in reviewing Statistics books, except to say, I usually found all of them confusing (more like me being so). But this book comes across as very well explained and simple to understand.
Would recommend this!
Along with "The Lady Tasting Tea" for a thorough understanding for the history and theory behind stats, wonderfully explained!

Great Overview of Myanmar's History!

This book gave me a great account of Myanmar before I travelled to the country two weeks ago. I am here for part of a gap year and this book has really helped me understand Myanmar's intricate past that has led to the creation of this misunderstood region.

Excellent book of philosophy

This material was written by Michel de Montaigne in the sixteenth century. It is a collecton of seven philophical essays. One is devoted to each of the following subjects: friendship, not being judgemental, the art of conversation, idleness, paternal affection towards their children, moderation, the nature of happiness while living.
I found this to be a very easy to read and enlightening collection of philosophy, that I believe you will enjoy also. The author of this work was very influential to many thinkers through out the centuries down to our time. This book was cited by a recent book I read by Joseph Epstein, Friendship, an expose.

"When the soul is without a definite aim she gets lost; for, as they say, if you are everywhere you are nowhere."

"I hold that you will never achieve by force what you cannot achieve by reason, intelligence and skill."

A great classic in wonderful presentation.

Like all of the other Penguin Classic Books series, this text is absolutely gorgeous and significant, inside and out. The cover is lushly decorated and the writing is a classic work that is an easy read. This is a definite must for one's personal library.

Montaigne's romanticism.

Montaigne's 'On Friendship' published in this Penguin 'Great Ideas' series is, at least in the title essay, absolute romanticised crap (friendship only occurs once every three hundred years, he was the once, women are incapable of it, it's the divine unification of souls, it proceeds in a perfect, uniform, calm, even harmony a etc.) and so far devoid of any merit except a kind of highbrow classical allusive style behind which any semblance of accuracy or reality is hidden.

Interesting to me that Montaigne, beloved of good contemporary writers like Paul Theroux, actually wrote hogwash along with whatever else he wrote that had merit.

We may thus disrespect and disavow the saints of the intellectual canon, we take any idea on its merit.

On the other hand as he writes of his special friendship like a star struck lover with a passion that is unusually mellow, as he and his friend lose themselves entirely in each other I begin to feel sympathy for the poetry of it all. Even if it's imaginary. It's friendship written about like lovers. Obviously moving to him.

Everything I expected and then some...

They're throwing around a clever logline on Twitter for this book... and I'm a sucker for a clever logline. "He stole her heart. She stole his car." Then, I read the blurb and it sounded like the perfect short read to get me through a rough day and a head cold. It was at that, but it was also really funny...but maybe that's the cold medicine talking.

No, it's not. Here are my favorite excerpts:

"Breaking and entering. I could arrest you. Again."
"Go ahead. Grand theft cookie." She took another bite. "That's a career-making bust."

"I didn't do anything." Honey sucked in a deep breath. "I'm not a thief."
"It's called 'grand theft auto.' Not 'grand I'm-just-taking-it-for-a-spin-around-the-block auto.'"

There's a lot more where those came from.

Honey's from the wrong side of the tracks and Jack was born with a silver spoon, but they both ended up at the same private school together where, after one amazing date, Honey dumped him flat and seemed determined to torment him. Years later--and a prison sentence for Honey, she's back in trouble and fearing for her life and Honey knows no one can keep her safe like her old flame Jack, now a police detective--and, if nothing else, he has a nice car she can "borrow."

I loved the muscle car references, and I immediately looked up pictures of the Super Bee and Volvo Sport when I got back on my laptop. This had all the sexy hotness of Gone In Sixty Seconds and the unicorn reference at one point ("Seeing her in a chop shop in West Hollywood was like finding a unicorn in a glue factory.")--almost seemed like an homage to that movie.

The characters are well developed and very, very likable, and the plot's pace was as fast as the cars in it. It even has a few car chases in it to ramp up the octane. If you like your romance to be funny and smart--and especially if you're a fan of reformed car thief plots, this is your book. If you're hopped up on cold medicine and probably couldn't get half the cleverness of this book--this is still your book. (I might have to reread this when my blood isn't .08 chicken noodle soup.)

Cute, funny, sexy read.

Too Hot To Handle is a cute, funny, sexy read.

Honey and Jack have had a thing for each other since high school. They even dated for a very brief period of time. They are from two different worlds. Jack is from a very wealthy family with political prospects in his future. Honey is a criminal who has been busted repeatedly and spent some time in prison for stealing Jacks cop car for a beer run. She has grown up and has tried hard to put the past behind her and make something out of her life. Differences aside, Jack and Honey have always been drawn to one another and always had a connection. So it makes sense when someone burns her house down and is after her she turns to Jack. He is the one person she knows will protect her and keep her safe.

There is a lot of action and even suspense thrown in as they try to figure out who is responsible for the fire and why someone wants her dead. Jack is the perfect hot alpha hero guy that everyone would love to have for their own, and Honey is the sexy sarcastic witty heroine. When you put them together, there is delicious chemistry and lots of laughs.
This was a quick fun escape if you're looking for a fast paced read with sizzling, sexy scenes and a bit of mystery.

There were a few places where I felt the story was a bit choppy. I also struggled with Honey keeping information from Jack during his investigation. He was putting everything on the line to help her, and I didn't feel that it was an even trade. However, in the end it all worked out and it was well worth the read.

A Must Read!

Too Hot to Handle was my first novel by author Aleah Barley, so I went into it not knowing what to expect, but I have to say to I'm really pleased because what I got was a great read. It's a hot and steamy novel - one that has a fast paced and exciting storyline, with a love story that was very intense and I loved it.

Honey Moore is known as a criminal. She's stolen expensive cars including a cop car and has been in jail, but after being released, she's trying to build a new life for herself. The problem is, someone just burned down her house and is now trying to harm her. The only person she can turn to is Jack Odgen, an old high school sweetheart who happens to be a cop, and the person whose cop car she stole.
Honey and Jack's relationship has always been complicated but at least she knows she can trust him, so of course, he's more than willing to help her solve who's behind the attack. But what they don't realise is, it's sure going to be a dangerous ride and Jack is going to have to sacrifice everything he loves in order to keep Honey save.

This book really was a fun, exciting and fast read and all the time I was reading it, I couldn't help being reminded of the movies like "Gone in 60 Seconds" and "Two Fast in Furious" with all the car references - which I have to say, I really enjoyed.

Honey comes across as a tom-boy because she loves cars and well, she's been in jail but she's strong and definitely not a whiney character and deep down, she's just like any girl - looking for the one guy that will treat her right and she really has found her match in Jack, even with all the obstacles that life throw at them, they really make a fantastic couple (even though they don't always see it).
Now Jack, really? How do I describe him? Well, I'm going to leave it in the hand of Honey because she really says it all; "He was a double fudge sundae with whipped cream, chocolate sauce, and cookie crumble. Beautiful. Rich. Bad for her." Need I say more? Jack really is amazing and is any girls dream. I love him!

Too Hot to Handle was definitely a hot read and if you're looking for your next adult fix, then this is the book for you. I can't wait to seeing what Aleah Barley comes up with next.

Dass sich viele Väter und Mütter mit den Fragen überdierichtige Erziehung beschäftigen, zeigt neben der Zuschauerquote der „SuperNanny“ (4,4 Millionen, vgl. Gorris, im Spiegel 29/2005; bis zu 5,5 Millionen, vgl. Hoffman, in Hörzu Ausgabe 3) auch der Betrag, der für Erziehungsbücher und Zeitschriften ausgegeben wurde: im vergangenen Jahr waren dies 750 Mio. Euro laut Spiegel, die Hörzu spricht sogar von über 1 Milliarde, die die Deutschen pro Jahr für entsprechende Ratgeberliteratur ausgeben. Dabei kann aus einem breiten Angebot gewählt werden, eine Marktforschung ergab 360 Titel, 360 Erziehungsberater, Handreichungen usw. (vgl. Gorris, Spiegel 29/2005, S. 135). Die Mitarbeiter eines Unternehmens sind mit ihrem Humankapital ein Erfolgsfaktor von besonders hoher Bedeutung, was sich im Hinblick auf den demographischen Wandel sogar noch verstärken wird. Führungskräfte der Unternehmen müssen mehr und mehr in der Lage sein, die emotionalen Signale der Mitarbeiter richtig zu deuten und entsprechend darauf zu reagieren. Motivation und Arbeitszufriedenheit sind mögliche Handlungsgebiete, mit deren Hilfe der Einsatz von Mitarbeitern effizienter gestaltet werden kann. Die vorliegende Arbeit beginnt mit einer grundlegenden Einführung in die Motivationspsychologie, in der die unterschiedlichen Theoriemodelle vorgestellt werden und eine Einordnung der VIE - Theorie von VICTOR VROOM (1964) ermöglicht wird. Diese Theorie wird im dritten Kapitel ausgiebig erläutert und in seine Teilmodelle aufgespalten. Der theoretische Teil der Arbeit schließt mit einer kritischen Würdigung der Theorie und leitet den praxisrelevanten Bereich der Arbeit ein. In Kapitel 5 werden die Erkenntnisse von VROOM genutzt, um auf das wichtige Thema Projektmanagement angewendet, die möglichen Folgerungen für Führungskräfte eines Unternehmens herauszustellen. Das abschließende kurze Fazit stellt wichtige Punkte noch einmal in den Vordergrund und rundet das Thema der Motivationspsychologie ab.

Jump Ship to Freedom is Volume 2 of the Arabus Family History. I have not read the first volume, about his father who was paid by his owner to serve in his stead during the American Revolution. How he helped General Washington or earned the respect of many white men and a certain fame among Blacks. But this book stands on its own merit.
Fourteen-year-old Daniel Arabus and his mother are slaves in Connecticut, the property of Captain Ivers. Their secret dream is to buy their freedom with the soldiers' notes (military scrip) which Daniel's father had earned for his war service. That is, if there ever is a federal government which will honor those notes.
Daniel is obsessed with obtaining those notes for the future--his owners virtually stole them from his mother. So he concocts a clever plan to steal them back, but sets in motion a chain of events which threatens to take him by ship to be sold down in the West Indies' cane fields--a kind of liviing hell.
He must use his wits and his courage, plus call his father's memory to mind in order to combat his harsh master, a string of bad luck and his own poor judgment. But he remains true to the way his brave father would want him to behave--even honoring a promise to a man on his deathbed, despite his natural desire to save his own neck. Daniel becomes the unwilling messenger for a major political issue as the delegates meet in Philadelphia to write our honored but much-maligned Constitution. A scrappy youth proves his integrity and true grit--honoring his father's memory--as he meets some famous men in post Revolutionary history. An exciting book which will captivate the reader while teaching about our American past.

JUMP SHIP-GREAT BOOK

I think that this book is great for all ages. My fifth grade class read this book together and it inspired many conversations. This book was a fun and interesting way to learn about what was happening during the revolution. This is just one of the books in this trilogy. The detail in this book was amazing! I found this book a great pleasure and I don't think any minute reading this was a waste of time!

Daniel Arabus raced across the dock with Big Tom a hairsbreadth behind him. He had to make it to Samuel�s Tavern, he just had to. If Big Tom caught him he would be brought back to Captain Ivers, tied to the Junius Bruntus� mainmast (which was Captain Ivers� ship), whipped, and sold to the Cane Fields in the South. Big Tom grabbed Daniel�s shirt, and Daniel knew he had only one choice�he jumped into the water. Would he make it, or would Big Tom catch him?
Hi... I just read Jump Ship to Freedom by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier.
Daniel Arabus was a 14 year-old slave for a horrible master named Captain Ivers. Captain Ivers takes Daniel on the Junius Bruntus (which is something Daniel has always to do), but taking Daniel on the Junius Bruntus is a trick! Captain Ivers really is taking Daniel to the South to be sold to the Cane Fields instead of New York, where Daniel thought they were going! Will Daniel escape, or will Captain Ivers sell him to the Cane Fields?
I feel I�m sort of like Daniel in a way (but thankfully, I�m not a slave!) because I�m courageous, strong-willed, and a little stubborn! I strongly liked this book because it didn�t have much cursing, was pretty interesting, and had some old history in it. My favorite part in Jump Ship to Freedom was when Daniel made a small fire in Captain Ivers� quarters and ran out of the room screaming that there was a huge fire and jumped of the Junius Bruntus to the New York harbor. One important thing this book lacked though was humor. I�ve only read two or three parts that were funny. I think that Jump Ship to Freedom is for 4-6 grade readers because it�s a long read, has mild violence, and blood.
Daniel was traveling with an elderly Quaker when he saw it. The Quaker needed a doctor badly and Daniel went into a Tavern to get one, and when he talked to the keeper to ask for a doctor he noticed a man hammering a poster to the wall. Daniel looked closer, and he saw it was a wanted poster�of him! Captain Ivers was onto him. Daniel started to run up the stairs�
