About the Author
Jody Williams, who received the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize for her work to ban landmines, is founding chair of the Nobel Women’s Initiative, launched in January 2006. She is the recipient of fifteen honorary degrees, and in 2004 Forbes magazine named her one of the hundred most powerful women in the world in its first such list. Since 1998 she has served as a Campaign Ambassador for the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, which she helped found in 1992. Williams holds the Sam and Cele Keeper Endowed Professorship in Peace and Social Justice at the Graduate College of Social Work at the University of Houston. In 2012–13, she became the inaugural Jane Addams Distinguished Visiting Fellow in Social Justice at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Superb!

Jody succeeds in telling her story in such a personal way allowing the reader to truly join in on her journey to activism and eventually the Nobel Peace Prize…

I found myself cheering her on even though I already knew how her story would end regarding the landmine campaign. She comes across as humble yet strong, and even quite humorous in the midst of the political side of her story. Extremely well done.

I couldn't put it down

With humor and candor, Jody Williams tells the story of her life up until she and the ICBL were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997. To me, her book was almost like a thriller - I could barely put it down! She has indeed led a fascinating life, helped and inspired so many, and epitomizes the change that one person can bring about. It's a great read!

The Making of a Peaceful Warrior

Two years ago, I was working on a television show about the increasing violence against women around the world for Houston PBS. For years, I had been trying to interview Jody Williams, the 1997 Nobel Peace Laureate who had led the international campaign to ban land mines. As a Professor at the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Houston, she conducts lectures here twice a year.
When I finally got a hold of her, she was surprised I had not reached her before. I thought she had avoided my requests because of her celebrity status. I was wrong. She was one of the most kind, authentic, and humble people I had ever met.
I have interviewed admirable people in my lifetime, Desmond Tutu, Jimmy Carter, Dominique De Menil, Alice Walker, met Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, and other lesser-known human rights activists, but Williams truly surprised me. Like all of them, she is dedicated and fearless, but when you are around her, you feel like she could be your next-door neighbor who you can trust with your children. She has no airs whatsoever. She is not afraid to speak her mind, nor does she mince her words. To me she is a modern day grassroots peaceful warrior. What you see is what you get.
When her book "My Name is Jody Williams: A Vermont Girls Winding Path to the Nobel Peace Prize came out, I quickly got a copy and I was not disappointed. I got to meet Williams at a more personal level in January of 2012. I was invited to be part of her delegation of the
Nobel Women's Initiative (which she leads with all the women laureates) and Just Associates (JASS) on a fact-finding mission. The goal was to hear from women confronting violence in Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala. We were to investigate the impact of the war on drugs and increased mining operations on the lives of women.
According to the report released in June of 2012 on that mission.
"The delegation found that violence against women is reaching crisis dimensions in Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala. In the last decade, femicides have risen by alarming rates - as much as 257% in Honduras. Indigenous women and women human rights defenders are particularly vulnerable to attacks, which include rape, torture, murder, and forced disappearances."
On that trip, Williams was focused, passionate, quietly driven to get answers and empowering the women we heard. Most had suffered atrocious violence. I believed she helped them find their own voice, with her compassion, knowledge and assurance something would be done.
I didn't know much about her personal life until I read the book. She was raised in Vermont with a very close and modest Catholic family and early on, discovered her own activist soul by chance.
The turning point came when she was handed a flyer about the Salvadoran war and the US role in it.
The following years, she spent time in Central America for different causes, generally helping the forgotten victims of violence and war.
In her memoir, and with great candor she shares her family's ordeal with her mentally ill brother, a failed marriage with her high school sweetheart, her frustration with the US Governments' role in the Vietnam and Central American conflicts and her ultimate as she sees it, "average America girl" response through social justice activism.
In a very easy to read and conversational style we also learn about her rape by a Salvadoran Death Squad member, her roller coaster love life and how she ended up working to ban landmines.
It happened unexpectedly in 1991, when she met executive director Bobby Muller of the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation who along with Thomas Gebauer of Medico International, a German Humanitarian organization felt "she was the right person to build a political movement to ban landmines. "They just knew I was going to be able to bring together non governmental organizations to put sustained pressure on governments to make them get rid of the weapons forever."She said and they were right.
The next few years she would dedicate her life, passion and determination to ban landmines, while learning everything she could about international law and surrounding herself with activists around the world with the same goals and perseverance. She was awarded the Nobel Prize along with the International Campaign to Ban Landmines in 1997.
Williams paid a lot of personal prizes for her activism, but she reminds us peace is not something you just imagine, or just talk and sing about. It is something you fight for. To understand peace, she says you must understand the causes of war. "Human security requires directing our resources toward providing for the basic needs of human beings so they are secure in their daily lives." She reminds us peace is not for the faint of heart." You have to fight for it! She has certainly proved that in how she has lived her life and how she continues her relentless pursuit of justice wherever she goes.

A superbly focused short introduction to the Roman Republic

Our fascination with Rome will never abate. Somehow a tiny village nestled amongst seven hills and adjacent to an ordinary river, whether through brilliant governance, military expertise, luck, fate or some combination of factors, managed to rule a large portion of the world for nearly 2000 years. The early years of Rome are mostly shrouded in myth but what we do know is that the young state was a monarchy and that it was primarily influenced by the neighboring Etruscan and colonial Greek civilizations. The Roman/Etruscan monarchy was eventually replaced by a republic in 510-509 BC. Its primary powers were invested in the state's elite families, beginning a policy that continued through the early centuries of the empire. The Roman Republic was vaulted into preeminence by strategic, ruthless warfare: first by absorbing the Etruscans, then defeating the Latins and the colonial Greeks. But it was the titanic struggle between Rome and Carthage - the two most powerful entities in the western Mediterranean - as epitomized by their three legendary wars, which resulted in Rome's mastery of the region. The Republic lasted for nearly two more centuries until Augustus was declared first citizen in 27 BC.

This Very Short Introduction to the Roman Republic is a superbly focused overview of some of the most important events in the ancient world. Author David Gwynn manages to highlight history in a memorable fashion by using prose that is crystalline in its clarity, and by organizing the book into perfectly chosen topical chapters. By unerringly choosing the most appropriate topics for discussion, he eliminates everything that isn't germane to his goal of explaining the rise of Rome with concision and accuracy. I cannot recall another book about Rome that managed to convey so much important information so quickly and with such impact. Because of the book's brevity, the reader is never far removed from previously encountered material. A mental image, similar to a large painting, is easy to hold in ones mind, making it possible for the reader to retain the big picture as the story of Rome unfolds. This side effect of brevity is one of the best features of the entire Very Short Introduction series. If you find the story of Rome as fascinating as I do, you will use this short introduction as a superb warm-up to famous works such as Ronald Syme's The Roman Revolution and Gibbon's magisterial The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire: Volumes 1-3 of 6 (Everyman's Library).

Excellent Synopsis

I always wanted to get a good basic sketch of the origins and life of the Roman Republic. David Gwynn provides a very nice short history with maps, images of items of importance in the Republics history, a chronology of events and suggestions for further reading for each chapter in the back of the book. Most importantly, the author describes the character of the Roman and the Republic's values that made that culture one of the world's most important and influential civilizations. Gloria and Dignitas!

A Good Read

My review is going to be a very short review, commensurate with the brevity of the book...which is well executed, considering the limited page count. What stood out, particularly, was the author's grasp for how large a role the pursuit of gloria among aristocratic rivals played throughout the history of the Republic. From the very beginning, the Republic was to be led by an aristocratic senate, as the stronger element within a mixed constitution. Throughout its history, ambitious individuals challenged the fragile harmony among these ambitious peers, until the last century of its existence, when a deluge of these individuals proved too much for the Republic to bear. Apart from this main theme, the book takes interesting detours into matters of Republican culture...particularly, pertaining to literature and sculpture, emphasizing the Romans' original contributions, such as Satire, as well as skillful adaptations of Greek crafts, such as the more "earthy" portrayal of public figures in busts. The book also includes a helpful "Suggestion for Further Reading," which is up-to-date. The prose are easy, and made for an enjoyable read.

The development of key methodologies for the study of battlefields in the USA in the 1980s inspired a generation of British and European archaeologists to turn their attention to sites in their own countries. The end of the Cold War and key anniversaries of the World Wars inspired others, especially in the UK, to examine the material legacy of those conflicts before they disappeared. By 2000 the study of war was again firmly on the archaeological agenda.

The overall purpose of the book is to encourage proponents and practitioners of Conflict Archaeology to consider what it is for and how to develop it in the future.The central argument is that, at present , Conflict Archaeology is effectively divided into closed communities who do not interact to any large extent. These separate communities are divided by period and by nationality, so that a truly international Conflict Archaeology has yet to emerge. These divisions prevent the exchange of information and ideas across boundaries and thereby limit the scope of the field. This book discusses these issues in detail, clearly outlining how they affect the development of Conflict Archaeology as a coherent branch of archaeology.

Beginning his controversial book with the reign of George III and ending with the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, Antony Taylor argues that in fact debates about royalty in Britain have always included an anti-monarchist element.
At a moment when political issues of key importance to Britain's future - European integration, the social and economic ramifications of Labour's election victory, devolution in Scotland and Wales, the monarchy's private woes vs. their public face, reform of the House of Lords - are forcing members of the public and politicians alike to take a long, hard look at their governing institutions, Taylor's lively study is particularly timely. Touching on the historical antecedents to the present crises, his book reconsiders English notions of republicanism, the Cromwellian legacy of the radical politics of the nineteenth-century reform movement, radicalism's relationship with Liberalism, and the hostility of reformers to the House of Lords. It also surveys republican traditions in the former colonies, with special attention paid to Australia. A significant contribution to the debate on the present crisis in the House of Windsor, 'Down with the Crown' seeks to modify widely held assumptions about the historical failure of radicals to contest monarchy in an effective and lasting manner.

Carl Frazier is the Lead Pastor at First United Methodist Church in Cary, North Carolina. He previously served as the Superintendent for the Elizabeth City District of the United Methodist Church. His senior pastorates have included Saint Luke United Methodist Church in Sanford, Hay Street United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, and Saint Francis United Methodist Church in Cary. He has served as a Delegate to the General Conference and Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference of the United Methodist Church, and currently serves on the United Methodist Publishing House Board of Directors. Carl’s passion in ministry centers around preaching and teaching the Scriptures, vision casting with a congregation, and sharing with others on their faith journeys. His hometown is Cary, North Carolina.

Egon Friedell (bis 1916 Friedmann) wurde am 21. Januar 1878 in Wien geboren. Er studierte Philosophie und Germanistik und promovierte 1904 mit einer Arbeit über 'Novalis als Philosoph'. Als Dramatiker, Kabarettist und Theaterkritiker, als Freund von Peter Altenberg und Alfred Polar gehörte er zu den bestimmenden Persönlichkeiten des Wiener Kulturlebens. Von 1922 bis 1927 war er Schauspieler bei Max Reinhardt in Berlin und Wien, dann freier Schriftsteller. Berühmt machte ihn seine 'Kulturgeschichte der Neuzeit' (3 Bände 1927-1931). Kurz nach dem deutschen Einmarsch in Österreich nahm sich Friedell am 16. März 1938 das Leben.

About the Author
Brad Wilcox is an associate professor in the department of Teacher Education at Brigham Young University, where he also works with programs such as Especially for Youth and Campus Education Week. As a young man, he served his mission in Chile, and he was later called back to that country to preside over the Chile Santiago East Mission from 2003 to 2006. He currently serves as a member of the Sunday School general board. Brad is the author of the bestselling book The Continuous Atonement and the BYU devotional His Grace Is Sufficient. He and his wife, Debi, are the parents of four children and grandparents of three.

New Insights on Conversion

So many of us feel that we just don't measure up or can't make it into heaven. Mr. Wilcox addresses this very issue in his newest book The Continuous Conversion. "We aren't earning our way into heaven were are learning our way into heaven."

The entire book is filled with the profound idea that we are making it there step by step and that the path to becoming a better person takes a gradual and continual progress over time. Conversion is not a fast or "on the surface" change, it is a deep rooted and little by little, day by day-- totally achievable goal.

As a former missionary in Chile I could relate to his examples from the field there. My favorite stories were of him reaching to youth at EFY and prisoners who had and had not experienced conversion. Brother Wilcox has a deep love for others and his counsel is filled with compassion.

Each chapter of The Continuous Conversion has a theme with so many hopeful point of doctrine to ponder. Temple worship, repentance, the names we are given and serving with zeal are some of the topics addressed. This book should and could be read more than once.
Brother Wilcox really helped me look at things in a completely new light and I would love to hear this one in audio so we can listen to it again and again as these are lessons for everyone that make an impression on the soul.

Insightful, Meaningful, and Relatable

A beautiful companion to the Continuous Atonement! I loved the idea of the bread and water on the two covers. Very symbolic. Every page of this new book provided great insight. It helped me understand grace, the Atonement, and the Gospel in new ways.
Each chapter was meaningful because they dealt with real issues and things we encounter daily in our lives. The stories and examples shared were relatable and moving.
As always Brad Wilcox's books are hopeful and inspiring. He has a way of motivating me to try harder rather than feeling guilty about not doing enough. I loved the understanding that came from his simple analogies and honest approach. He has a gift for sharing his knowledge in a way that makes sense and doesn't get boring.

I feel confident buying any Brad Wilcox book.

Brad Wilcox is one of my favorite authors. I saw him speak at a time out for women and went running up to him because I had to have him sign one of the other books he has written, "The Continuous Atonement". He writes books that are intelligent, but easy to read. He gives great insights that make his subject matter easier to understand without dumbing it down. He issues lots of personal experiences and personal stories, too, which I love. I would highly recommend him. I encourage people all the time to read his books, but rarely do I lend them out because I always want to keep a copy at home for my own reference. Love his writing.
