About the Author
Lucius Annaeus Seneca, statesman, philosopher, advocate and man of letters, was born in Spain around 4BC. He rose to prominence at Rome, pursuing a double career in the courts and political life, until Claudius sent him into exile exile on the island of Corsica for eight years. Recalled in AD49, he was appointed tutor to the boy who was to become, in AD54, the emperor Nero. Seneca acted for eight years as Nero's unofficial chief minister until Nero too turned against him and he retired from public life to devote himself to philosophy and writing. In AD65, following the discovery of a plot against the emperor, he and many others were compelled by Nero to commit suicide. C.D.N. Costa has spent most of his working life at Birmingham University, where he is Professor of Classics and Chairman of the School of Antiquity. Among other works, he has written commentaries on the works of Seneca, Letters, Dialogues and the tragedy Medea.

On the Shortness of Life
Most human beings, Paulinus,* complain about the meanness of nature, because we are born for a brief span of life, and because this spell of time that has been given to us rushes by so swiftly and rapidly that with very few exceptions life ceases for the rest of us just when we are getting ready for it. Nor is it just the man in the street and the unthinking mass of people who groan over this - as they see it - universal evil: the same feeling lies behind complaints from even distinguished men. Hence the dictum of the greatest of doctors:† 'Life is short, art is long.' Hence too the grievance, most improper to a wise man, which Aristotle expressed when he was taking nature to task for indulging animals with such long existences that they can live through five or ten human lifetimes, while a far shorter limit is set for men who are born to a great and extensive destiny. It is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a lot of it. Life is long enough, and a sufficiently generous amount has been given to us for the highest achievements if it were all well invested.

Changed My Life

I know the title sounds too good to be true and I'm sure is not typical of the average reader's results but for me it truly did change the way I looked at life. I'm sure it was a combination of many thing that have been happening recently with the more people I've met and books I've read but this specific piece was the tipping point for me to really change the way I look at materialism and my time. It was the spark that caused me to quit a 6 figure job and pursue higher goals and more fulfilling work. I am now much more satisfied with life and have actually passed where I was in life held down by trading my time for money to pay the mortgage... a never ending helpless cycle.

If you're just looking for some great Seneca, I would suggest "On Anger" or "On Favors"

I read some Seneca and absolutely loved it. So I looked for more and saw that his essay "On the Shortness of Life" was well loved. Upon reading it and the other essays in this book, however, I am less than impressed. These essays didn't seem as rich and meaningful as the others. Both philosophically and practically, I found these essays to fall clearly short of the Seneca I read at first, particularly "On Anger" and "On Favors" (AKA "Of Benefits").
If you're new to Seneca, I would suggest starting with essays from this volume: Seneca: Moral and Political Essays (Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought). You can get a used copy of a well-edited volume of some of Seneca's best essays, including the ones I mention as well as "On Mercy [Clemency]" and others. So for a few more buck you can get quite a few better essays, in my opinion.

Imprescindible book

This is a great book for anyone asking the meaning of life, if we should spend our lives working in 8 to 16 jobs and wait to the retirement to "enjoy the life". I recommend this book for every people, and would be advocating to my sons to read it before the 18 years.
It applies to this days as if were been written just some years ago. Imprescindible.
