The Good Parts Are Good!

On the whole, this was a pleasant read. I'll try to give a sense of where the highlights are and aren't, since the book could have used some more rigorous editing to make it more uniformly good.

The bits on the early history of trigonometry were fascinating. I particularly appreciated the clear and complete explanations of problems from the Egyptian Rhind papyrus and from cuneiform sources.

Not all of the later historical developments are equally worth our time. The sidebars on Viète, Lissajous, and Landau were particularly good, but the ones on Agnesi and De Moivre didn't add much. (This is unfortunate in the case of De Moivre, but I think a sidebar just can't do justice to so great a mathematician--the fun and beauty is lost when you try to squeeze the highlights together.) I agree with Maor that the big names should not be allowed to slide into oblivion, but in a book like this the subject matter should always pass the stricter test of what intrinsic "delights" it offers.

In this genre, the digressive nature of a "journey of discovery" is part of the appeal. But sometimes the thread connecting the episodes was hard to discern here. Chs. 7-8, 10-12 are tedious and feel like padding compared to the well-sustained interest throughout most of the book.

On the other hand, Ch. 14 ("Imaginary Trigonometry") is a masterpiece. With only a basic knowledge of how complex numbers work, readers can appreciate three beautiful examples of conformal mapping (w=sin z, w=e^z, z=w^2). These mappings are chosen and illustrated to your imagination much better than any of the visual exhibits in a standard applied math textbook like Greenberg's "Advanced Engineering Mathematics."

It's in the nature of such a book that sometimes the key problems presented are solved with the help of something that Maor thinks is too advanced or tedious to present to his audience. The result can be that the story of historical progress is obscured by these "rabbit out of a hat" moments. At least, I found that I had to stop and look up the missing pieces, in order to make some of the developments as impressive as they were supposed to be. (I also had to look up some "well-known theorems" in Euclid, read up on the background to Stirling's factorial approximation, etc.)

Excellent, something for everyone, both students and average person

First, this is not an instructional text and falls into the category of popular math books for the masses.

This is another, history of math with some math in it and some neat applications. So if you are not a math type, the historical and presentation of the applications makes it a worthwhile read.
If you are a math type, this book still has enough history and some applications that you probably have not read in your trig book. Yes, a good number of the applications are presented in every trig textbook. The author's presentation is alot more exciting than the average trig text, and there are enough of interesting applications which will make it worthwhile.

With the rise of popular math books there are a large number which mix the history and the theorems. But few authors are good at it, and the ones who can do it, are great at it. Maor does an excellent job.

His goal is to make trig engaging. Which is a good thing. considering trig is not even a required course in a good number of high school's cirriculum. When I was in high school you really could not take Calculus without it. Now you can get to college without ever taking trig.

So for a student , it offers a nice incentive to learn trig. Also the historical presentation is always a great resource for understanding math. Textbooks throw this stuff in as sidebars, but they never put it in its historical context. So this genre of book is worthwhile to the student.

For me, trig really became fun when I took a drafting course, and had to apply it. And it was fun. Hopefully this book will make it fun for a student to really learn trig.

An ideal book for high school mathematics teachers

Trigonometry is the study of relations between angles and lengths. Indeed SOH CAH TOA and trigonometric identities are part of the subject, but there is much more to the subject than what you may have learned in high school. If you have trouble remembering whether sin(0)=0 or cos(0)=0, you can fix this either by using your calculator to find that sin(0)=0, or you can memorize sin(0)=0 (which at least stores something in your brain, and if the memorization is done severely enough it will indeed last your life), or finally by having such a comprehensive understanding of trigonometry that mixing up sin(0)=0 and cos(0)=0 would be like forgetting whether sugar or salt tastes sweet.

Learning the history of a subject along with learning the content of the subject itself helps you remember material and makes the material feel alive. It also helps with pacing the rate at which you absorb careful mathematical proofs. After reading even a page or two of a serious proof you need time to let the material settle before going on to the next proof. Many in the discipline of mathematics today think of theorems and proofs as real mathematics and anything else as motivation that one should learn to do without. This is wrong; things are true whether or not someone has written them down and things will wait for us to find them out. Anything that helps people absorb mathematics into their brains is real mathematics. (Thus using a calculator to calculate values of trigonometric functions is a skill but not a mathematical skill as it doesn't involve putting mathematics in your brain, any more than idly chatting while playing a video game is practice in public speaking.) Of course talking about the provenance of the Rhind Papyrus has no mathematical content. But it is fun to read about, and it gives you hooks in your mind to remember things about the papyrus. Likewise, learning the etymology of mathematical terms such as sine and degree gives us more ways to summon mathematics from our memory.

This is not a serious work of history like the works of T. L. Heath, D. T. Whiteside, D. H. Fowler, W. K. Bühler, J. E. Hofmann, André Weil, Lucio Russo or Clifford Truesdell, and a careful writer should not use this as a reference. But it is a fun book that shows the reader many different theorems in trigonometry they may not have seen before, and gives the reader an outline of the history of the subject that can be filled in by reading more detailed books.

If you just skim this book, I encourage you to at least read the chapter on Regiomantanus, which presents a problem posed by him: "At what point on the ground does a perpendicularly suspended rod appear largest?" Aside from being a question that doesn't seem contrived, it can involve the arithmetic mean-geometric mean inequality and calculus.

Great book for efficiently learning excel

Great way to get up to speed quickly
Every chapter comes with spread sheets for quickly duplicating everything in the book
Lots of good review questions at the end of the book
Teaches and reinforces efficient ways of solving practical business problems

Cons:
Incredible amount of typos for a second edition
Kindle version doesn't include an index with page numbers - so its useless

This is the second version of Gottieb's very popular book teaching excel to business and finance professionals. I spent about a week 4-5 hours a day working through this book in conjunction with the downloadable excel files going through it chapter by chapter. It was time well spent and my excel skills improved dramatically.

I found the reviews of the first version of this book to be right on. The author does do a great job of painlessly teaching the information. True power users will likely learn something new but may find some of the information to be too basic.

The biggest problem with the old version is still here. Surprisingly, this updated edition is still filled with lots of typos, errors in spreadsheets and a few incorrect answers which seems to get worse towards the end of the book.

For example, figure 29.7 contains formulas that omit the last row. The screen shot in excel even points this out and includes the warning indicator that the formula is missing adjacent cells - i.e., the missing row. Chapter 29 question #6 option #3 asks the reader to calculate the IRR for a situation with an initial investment of 300,000 to gain 450,000 at the end of year 3. My excel spreadsheet and an online calculator indicates the correct answer to be 14.47% but the book says 7.46%.

I would guess I probably spent an extra 5-6 hours overall from double checking and reviewing stuff due to the errors in the book. For some readers this won't be a big deal. However, for those of us meticulously going through every exercise in the book it does get quite tiresome after awhile.

So why did I give it 4 stars and not a lower score? It really is organized incredibly well and laid out in a way that makes it easy to rework the problems and integrate the most efficient process for solving a range of typical business problems. I had tried other well reviewed books previously but found some of them took too much time and effort trying to figure out what the author was trying to teach and then to learn how to do it in the spreadsheet. As a result, I never got very far using those books.

In this book, the author includes hundreds of well thought out screen shots with arrows and inserted notes pointing out where the reader should be looking, what exactly they should be clicking and how to perform the new skill as effortlessly as possible. Yes, it is more expensive compared to other books teaching similar skills but far less time is wasted learning the new skills.

Other notes:
I used the kindle version on my Nexus 7 and found it typical of most kindle version textbooks. Most of the graphs were easy to read requiring no extra zooming, there are no page numbers in the table of contents but does contain active links and the index is useless containing neither page numbers nor active links.

This book is specifically for Excel versions 2007 and 2010 with extra material for Mac's excel 2011 and excel 2003. I started the book using my old copy of excel 2007. However, once I saw a few cool newer options that wasn't in my version I decided to try excel 2013 via the free trial as this was going to be my one chance to really spend lots of time learning excel so might as well try to be up to date. This worked out very well and the book was still very easy to follow. I'll most likely continue the Office 365 subscription as its clearly better than my old version.

Good for beginers

Gave this to new grads in my office who started working right out of college. The reason I picked this is because the content was basic and did not require any prior knowledge of excel. By the end of going through this book, the person got the hang of excel which was the whole purpose of the exercise.

If you already work with excel, then this book is probably not for you. I will suggest it for beginners. (I work with excel on a daily basis constructing complicated financial models, so my definition of basic might be a bit high, but you can judge the level of this book by using the free previews). Intermediate and advanced users can probably still pick up a few new tricks from this book.

As an MBA graduate in a tuff job market, any little advantage helps. Knowing excel is a huge advantage and this book helped me become more comfortable and more efficient with the program. Besides some typos, the book was everything I hoped it would be.

This book is a good mix between overview physics for the clinicians and details for ultrasound researchers. It has been invaluable to me for teaching the residents the physics behind non-linear harmonic generation and contrast agents (Chapter 12 and 14) for example. It has good images and examples showing the advantages of harmonic imaging and imaging with contrast agents over standard fundamental imaging. It has also been good for research details with equations and has a comprehensive set of references -- helpful for doing research in the area. In summary it has a intuitive physics and detailed equations -- therefore works for a wide range of people.

About the Author
Jeffrey Isaac is a senior instructor with Wilderness Medical Associates and an experienced physician assistant with an interest in remote and extreme environments. In his many years of medical practice, he has served as an ambulance medic, fire/rescue crewman, professional ski patroller, and emergency department practictioner. For more than twenty seasons he was an instructor and course director with Outward Bound. One of the gold standards in the field

An absolute classic. Guides you all the way from the initial assessment to treating specific injuries and illnesses assuming that help is more than a few hours away. While it will be very difficult to remember every possible treatment for each situation, this book will at least give you a good foundation to build upon. The key is to read and study about the most likely injuries for your proposed activity. Highly recommended reference and study book.

Maine source for Village LIfesaver training in the mountain villages of Vietnam

I am using this guide as my main source for teaching first aid to farmers in rural mountain villages in Vietnam. It worked so well last year, I will be using the same syllabus derived from Mr Isaac's book. I work with Vets With a Mission [...] and you can follow our first aid training team on the website blog. The villages where we teach are over an hour from any hospital and there is no EMS. That is why I use wilderness medicine as a guide. I taught Combat LIfesavers training to many, many soldiers and call this program Village Lifesavers. We do three days of training and give each student a simple first aid kit to keep. We also have doctors training the staff at the local village clinics....so you can see where we are heading.......developing an EMS system where there is none. Exciting....and I really want to thank Outward Bound and Mr Isaac for their handbook.

Dennoch haben Medienprodukte gewisse Eigenschaften, die sie von anderen Wirtschaftsgütern unterscheiden. So erfüllen Medien neben der ökonomischen Aufgabe der Gewinnerzielung auch gesellschaftliche Aufgaben, wie etwa die öffentliche Meinungsbildung. Außerdem ist die Qualität eines Medienprodukts im Voraus nicht festzustellen. Medien sind als Güter zu verstehen, deren Kauf stark vom Vertrauen der Konsumenten abhängt. In der Ökonomie werden zahlreiche verschiedene Ansätze diskutiert, die versuchen, das Verhalten von Wirtschaftssubjekten zu erklären. Dabei ist die Neoklassik eine der dominierenden Theorien. In dieser Arbeit soll untersucht werden, wie aussagekräftig die neoklassische Theorie für das Mediensystem ist. Beispielsweise ist zu diskutieren, ob die neoklassische Annahme des „homo oeconomicus“, des rational handelnden Individuums, auf den Medienkonsum übertragbar ist. Die neoklassische Schule ist, wie der Name schon erahnen lässt, eine Weiterentwicklung des klassischen Ansatzes. Betrachtet man die Hauptdiskussionen in der Volkswirtschaftslehre, so wird deutlich, dass meist die Frage im Mittelpunkt steht, ob sich die Volkswirtschaft im wesentlichen spontan in Richtung eines langfristigen Vollbeschäftigungsgleichgewichts entwickelt oder ob dazu staatliche Eingriffe nötig sind. Ansätze, die von starken selbstregulierenden Kräften einer Volkswirtschaft ausgehen, werden als klassisch bezeichnet. In dieser Arbeit sollen zunächst Grundlagen klassischen Theorie vorgestellt werden. Im Anschluss sollen die zentralen Aussagen der neoklassischen Theorie aufgezeigt werden. Ob sich die Annahmen der Neoklassik auch auf das Mediensystem anwenden lassen, soll schließlich in Kapitel 5 überprüft werden. Abschließend soll eine Kritik des neoklassischen Ansatzes erfolgen.

Beide Eltern sind Musiker, der Vater Geiger, die Mutter Sängerin und so soll der Sohn eigentlich Violine studieren. Mit 16 Jahren verlässt er die USA um seine Ausbildung in Deutschland zu beginnen. Der junge Leonell Charles interessiert sich jedoch mehr für die bildende Kunst und so erhält er von seinen Eltern schließlich die Erlaubnis zum Besuch der Kunstgewerbeschule in Hamburg. Bereits ein Jahr später wird er an der Akademie in Berlin aufgenommen. Kurz darauf entstehen die ersten Zeichnungen für Satiremagazine, die recht schnell auch seinen Lebensunterhalt sichern sollen. 1901 heiratet Feininger Clara Fürst, nur ein Jahr später kommt die erste Tochter Lore zur Welt und noch ein Jahr später die zweite Tochter Marianne. 1903 darf Feininger seine Zeichnungen in der Berliner Secession ausstellen. Er zieht nach Paris. 1905 tritt Julia Berg in sein Leben, für die er kurze Zeit später seine Frau verlässt. Ein Jahr darauf kommt der gemeinsame Sohn Andreas zur Welt, der später als Fotograf Bekanntheit erlangen wird. Ihm folgen 1909 der zweite Sohn Laurence und 1910 der dritte Sohn Theodor Lux. Im Jahr 1907 - beinahe 20 Jahre nach Beginn seiner künstlerischen Tätigkeit - malt Feininger sein erstes Bild. In den folgenden Jahren beschäftigt sich Feininger - vor allem in Parisintensiv mit den künstlerischen Strömungen und Tendenzen seiner Zeit. Die Nähe zu dem von Robert Delauny geprägten Orphismus, der mit seiner prismenartigen Aufspaltung der Bildmotive Feiningers spätere Werken formal nahe kommt, leugnet Feininger jedoch stark. In der Folgezeit arbeitet Feininger malerisch, erste Erfolge stellen sich ein. Er pflegt Freundschaften zu Künstlerpersönlichkeiten wie Alfred Kubin und lernt wichtige Zeitgenossen kennen, unter ihnen die Brücke-Künstler Karl Schmidt-Rothluff und Ernst Heckel. In den folgenden Jahren stellt Feininger immer häufiger Architekturen und Stadtansichten in seinen Werken dar, die Menschen verschwinden.
