An old classic on police tactics.

Many police officers collect old law enforcement material. As a former police trainer I collect books dealing with police defensive tactics. This text was originally published in 1930. The author was an internationally famous Jiu-jitsu instructor at that time. He developed a basic Jiu-jitsu course for law enforcement officers in the 1930s, and the same course was also taught to the FBI, as well as to members of the U.S. Navy, Marines and U.S. Army. Though this book is only 56 pages long, it contains over 40 techniques. The photos are old and not very clear, but you can still understand the techniques by reading the captions. Some of the techniques and do not show enough detail; nevertheless, many of the techniques demonstrated are just as valid today as they were in 1930. In conclusion, if you are into the history of police tactics and self-defense, you will want this small volume in your personal collection.

Fascinating Insight into Police Methods of the 1930's

"American Police Jiu Jitsu" was written to give an officer or average citizen tools to defend themselves. It is interesting to note that the end of this book has an advertisement for another text titled "Thirty Six Secret Knock Out Blows Without the Use of Fists." While largely drawn from the charts in Kano's Judo and Jiu Jitsu (available in a Dover reprint), atemi-waza and pressure-point strikes were common knowledge in the US Martial arts community in the 1930's. Jorgensen includes a section on artificial respiration (the back-lift method) and a page on how to check arterial bleeding.
The techniques rely on arcs, interceptions of the weapon hand with body avoidance movement and spiral defense movements that control the opponent's limbs, head and torso. Certainly this is not a complete self-defense system, but could serve as the core for such a course, especially if supplemented with the author's book on atemi-waza.
