Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2005 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 1,0, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (Deutsches Institut), Veranstaltung: Heinrich Manns Frühwerk, 16 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Zunächst untersuche ich die Art und Weise, wie die Geschichte des Romans erzählerisch vermittelt wird, um dann zu fragen: ‚Warum wird sie gerade so vermittelt und nicht anders, welche Funktion könnte die gewählten Darstellungsverfahren, verstanden als integraler Bestandteil eines „politische[n], demokratische[n] Roman[s]“9, haben?’. Bei meiner narratologischen Betrachtung von „Die kleine Stadt“ stütze ich mich im Wesentlichen auf die von Gérard Genette in seinem Standardwerk „Die Erzählung“10, formulierte Erzähltheorie. Genette unterscheidet fünf Hauptkategorien der Erzähltextanalyse (1. Ordnung, 2. Dauer, 3. Frequenz, 4. Modus, 5. Stimme11). Im Hinblick auf die erzählerischen Eigenarten des Romans scheint es mir nicht sinnvoll diese Kategorien unbesehen in die narratologische Analyse aufzunehmen. So ist z.B. eine umfangreiche Untersuchung der Ordnung der Erzählung nicht nötig, da die chronologische Ereignisfolge seitens des Erzählers nicht ein Mal umgestellt wird. Fragen der Dauer lassen sich hier leicht im Zusammenhang mit dem Modus der Erzählung darstellen und auch eine Analyse der Frequenz erscheint wenig lohnend, da Ereignisse nur in der Form der singulativen Erzählung („,einmal erzählen, was sich einmal ereignet hat’“12) präsentiert werden. Ich werde mich also auf die Kategorien Modus (Distanz, Erzählung von Ereignissen und Worten/Gedanken, Fokalisierung) und Stimme (Funktionen des Erzählers) konzentrieren, wobei ich auch hier zur Analyse nur jene Unterkategorien heranziehe, die in Bezug auf den Untersuchungsgegenstand und die Zielsetzung dieser Arbeit einen wirklichen Erkenntnisgewinn versprechen.
