Play God, Experience Evolution

Like the previous reader, I must applaud this book. While I know Mathematica well, I am no mathematician and I have no patience for books that do not explain the foundations of their programs or functions.
The author here, Jacob, does an excellent job of introducing the reader gradually to the different concepts of simulating evolution. As you can download the Mathematica notebooks and run them on your own computer, this quickly becomes a fun and interactive book.
The book starts with simple selection processes for reproduction. Select shapes, colors or features and see a next generation evolve! This can be a fun game. See breeding and mutation be used to search for an optimum of a three-dimensional function, where the reader knows the global optimum, while different "populations" try to find it by evolutionary methods-mutating or breeding to a different spot, which they evaluate and according to its height be successful in the passing of their genes or not. Other fun chapters include evolutionary production of mobiles and flowers. The culmination is in the evolution of algorithms. This evolves small programs for searching for food in a maze. The successful programs "breed," "mutate," and reproduce, while the unsuccessful ones starve and die. The result is a complex path toward better algorithms for searching for food.
Part of the value of this book for me is that it really shows the limits of evolutionary analysis. You can simulate the successes--the butterflies that do manage to change colors to avoid falling easy prey when the environment changes; the evolutionary mechanisms that find the global optimum of a function-but there is no concrete way to determine or describe their efficiency ex ante. This is a major failure of evolutionary analysis generally, rather than a drawback of the book. If anything, the book deserves credit for making this failure understandable, although Jacob does not spend time exploring or solving the problem of determining evolutionary fitness.
[To put it in an example, suppose there are two evolutionary mechanisms. An organism can evolve by mutation or by reproduction. Mutation is the random change of some individuals in the population, and the change makes them either more or less successful in their environment. Reproduction means parents producing an offspring by mixing their features, and the different offspring will have different degrees of success in their environment. We can simulate their operation in a hypothetical environment, by for example, saying that the background foliage changes color and organisms have different probabilities of being eaten by predators depending on their color. We run the simulation and see which evolutionary mechanism adapts to the new environment faster and better. Nevertheless, we cannot conclude that the evolutionary mechanism that won this test will win every test. Needless to say, when designing evolutionary systems this conclusion is crucially necessary. If we are designing a computer search program, should we have it "mutate" or "reproduce"? Since we do not know the challenges it will face (the changes in the environment that it must overcome) we cannot evaluate its success ex ante.]
With the caveat of not exploring measurements of the success (fitness) of different evolutionary mechanisms, this is a spectacular book. It is worth comparing it with the books of the various biologists, who simply offer examples of evolutionary changes from the past or hypotheses of evolutionary explanations for various phenomena. Those are speculations of amateurs compared to the experimentation and verification that Jacob's approach offers. That the field is not ready for rigorous conclusions is unfortunate, but something that is no fault of this author.

Extremely interesting--variety of applications and quite !

I am quite satisified with what I am reading. As a non-scientist, I can see how this evolutionary theory and this particular theory relates to life in general and its applications and conditions. The introduction is quite important and explains how the theory of evolution (correct or not is not necessary) is used to help with mathematical computations and solve mathematical problems.
What is implied in Christian Jacob's book is quite broad and revolutionary. In color plate 2, page 288, "independent populations climbing peaks" reminds me of the recent findings of a particular species of parrot (thought extinct in South America since 1910)living currently on some Volcano in South America by residents there by accident. Yet, through evolutionary models, one can track species and perhaps any existence.
What is most interesting is what is implied--that tracking can be used to oppress or cause extinctions (such as poaching) and so it could be implied that randomness would occur by species under these conditions to avoid tracking such as avoiding evolutionary tracking. Randomness would therefore be an evolutionary process to survive. Finding randomness could suggest a species or whatever is possibly trying to avoid being tracked through evolutionary tracking. Evolutionary tracking is relatively new and so this is why there is perhaps little randomness (or maybe none has been discovered yet), but randomness is a possibility that seems to be a probable result and not clearly an original play--since so far, not much randomness if any has been found.
If one turns Color Plate 3 on page 289 upside down, one is perhaps presented with an ocean. Recently, life that does not need oxygen to exist has been found living deep in an ocean. The life was most likely dicovered without using evolutionary tracking models, though the models would suggest something is there though what has evolved or not is not clear and would need more elaborate formulas and charts of various sorts. That ocean life found uses other sources as reported by this science news wire:

So, Color Plate 3 is quite interesting as it would suggest that in addition to the findings of the scientists, there are at least two other entities there they have not discovered...
It is as though the models and formulas can be applied in a variety of instances due to lack of randomness and that evolutionary tracking has so far not been avoided with randomness...
This suggests early birth of Earth and evolution of all or most species and things on Earth, evolutionary tracking not done until recently by Earthlings or others, or that evolutionary tracking so far is used for good and not to cause extinction or disruption...
I would say the book is written for scientists mainly and there are a number of formulas, but they do apply to the humanities.

A Good bench reference for non-insects

The other reviewers' descriptions are correct: this is a valuable reference. I would like to like to clarify this a little however. The text is an important tool for taxonomists and ecologists working with aquatic macroinvertebrates. However, its emphasis is clearly on non-insects. If you need to identify insects-the most abundant aquatic macroinvertebrates, you should use Merritt and Cummins (1996) text: An introduction to the Aquatic Insects of North America. If you will be identifying samples for stream bioassessments you will need both of these books-and probably some others-as bench references.
To use these references to identify organisms, you will need access to a laboratory because you will need glassware, forceps, microscopes and other tools and chemicals. Sometimes a dissecting scope is required. Sometimes you will need to mount parts of organisms on microscope slides to view them on a compound scope at high magnification. If you represent a volunteer group and don't have access to (or experience with) this type of equipment, this book may not be for you. You might be better off with Resse Voshell's book: A Guide to Common Freshwater Invertebrates of North America. His text generally has family-level taxonomy based on characteristics observable in the field. Both books contain interesting ecological information in addition to taxonomic identification.
So yes, this book clearly deserves two "Thumbs Up" but you should consider your experience level, taxonomic need, and how you will use this book before you purchase it. Excellent support for benthic macroinvertebrate surveys

A retired chemist, I have been using Thorp and Covich in connection with benthic macroinvertebrate surveys related to stream water quality work. The drawings are extremely clear, and the keys are excellent. As an amateur, I particularly appreciate the book's comprehensive glossary. If you find that Voshell's fine but brief Guide to Common Freshwater Invertebrates of North America does not provide you with the level of detail you need, you'll almost certainly find Thorp and Covich very useful. A minor flaw--the page(s) listed in the index for an item are often three pages earlier than the page(s) in the book at which the item actually occurs.

A Major Source of Aquatic Invertebrate Information

The second edition of "Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates" has provided aquatic biologists with a powerful tool. The study of freshwater organisms has gained in importance as we see our precious water resources become more scarce and polluted. As water flows downhill it takes with it every chemical and waste product we deposit on the surface. Fresh water (and marine) organisms are a first line of defense alerting us to the destruction. The presence or absence of many of these organisms is often significant in regard to water quality and environmental health.
In addition, there is increased interest in our freshwater systems and their biota, both among professionals and knowledgeable amateurs. The lack of funding and specialists in certain areas for the needed research in aquatic systems may make the role of the latter more important with time, as has already occurred in astronomy and to a lesser degree in other areas of study.
This book is a good summery of aquatic organisms from Protozoa to Arthropoda. Despite a few irritating typos, it compares well with earlier editions of Pennak's "Freshwater Invertebrates of the United States" in coverage (the 4th edition of Pennak drops both the protoctists and the insects, while retaining the non-insect arthropods and including some color illustrations). If one can afford them they are both worth having, but for reasonably up-to-date overall coverage and inclusiveness and at a cheaper price, Thorp and Covich (eds.) book is a good reference for all Canadian and U. S. freshwater invertebrates in the very broad sense.

At FDA Science Is Not The Only Criteria For Product Approval

It is particularly useful at this time to highlight with a review a vital well researched book which studies the power of some anti birth control ideologues inside the FDA who have clearly made contraceptive approval very difficult.

This book was earlier reviewed by Kelly C. Cleland in Conscience, the Catholics for Choice magazine, entitled "Business and Politics First, Women Second: The FDA's Drug Approval Process" about "Reproductive Rights and the State: Getting Birth Control, RU 486, and Morning After Pills, and the Gardasil Vaccine to the US Market". by Melissa Haussman (Praeger, 2013, 184 pp)

Reviewer Cleland excerpts information from this important 2013 book that likely will frighten anyone who thinks the FDA approval process is based on scientific evidence gathered by well monitored and reputable researchers. Far from it! Examples: "Haussman details the often convoluted processes behind achieving FDA approval and bringing the product to market, highlighting the complex interplay of cor and political interests that impeded or expedited the availability of each product in the US."
Or: "In the case of emergency contraception, the agency's mechanisms were used to impede and stall, rather than facilitate, availability." Whereas, "in the case of Gardasil, however, these same tools were used to expedite the approval of a new vaccine that had more to do with pressure exerted by the pharmaceutical industry than it did with public health."

After proving with the Supreme Court's recent Catholic dominated decisions on abortion clinic access and the right of women to get contraception under the employer health plans of family owned businesses of any size, we know the power of this male dominated monotheistic sect has now accomplished its goal: Deny women and their families basic human rights and the fundamental democratic means to fulfill them.

Earlier this same attitude has lead to the frequent dilution of Roe v Wade in many parts of the USA. In short, these anti choice proponents are delighted to kill women in pursuit of their ideology. Perhaps the greatest irony is the fact that there are women's groups who work to take away the freedom of choice from members of their own sex. Are they dogs in the manger or just sadly willing to bend their knees to religious dogma which has actually no certain mandate in the Catholic Church's history?

This book is a must read for anyone contemplating dealings with the FDA.

Reproductive rights or permission for promiscuity

The author, like so many feminist "reproductive rights" advocates, insists that a woman's reproductive rights are contingent upon access to abortion, birth control and vaccines to prevent STD's (or STI's). What she and most feminists fail to recognize is that our reproductive rights are very well within our own means without the availability of drugs to remedy unfortunate consequences of irresponsible actions. Pregnancy and STD's are not the greatest harmful effects of promiscuous sexual activity. The emotional and psychological fallout risks that are a result of frequent, unattached, casual sex are far greater risks than the physical, as are the psychological effects of abortion and/or diagnosis with a curable or merely manageable STI/STD . The lie that sexual freedom is found in the approval of these drugs is as bad as the lie that sex has no other "consequence" than the physical. Believing that sexual freedom lies within the contents of a book like this is no freedom at all. It is merely slavery to something far worse...a slave to lies that say that they will protect you and all that will be well, when in reality, they are opening the door to far greater pain and consequence.

The book has errors. I do not mean typos, but errors in programs and algorithms. I used two previous editions and order the newest hoping that it would be more error-free. What is disappointing, this book is a great source of reference and some codes and methods are really hard to find anywhere else, and are never explained as systematically. The style is not the easiest to digest, but once you passed enough numerical analysis classes, you mostly need a reference, and how attractive is this: everything in one book? I appreciate switching from fortran to matlab.

A classic book that got even better

This is now the best and most up-to-date textbook for numerical linear algebra at the graduate level, which I have been teaching for seven years. In the past, I always liked its third edition as a reference book, but hesitated to use it as a textbook, because it was difficult for students to study. The fourth edition reads much clearer, and I also like the new organization of the chapters very much. The fourth edition is much more friendly for self-study by matured students. I highly recommend it to students and practitioners who already have some basic understanding of linear algebra and would like to learn more about numerical algorithms in linear algebra for computational sciences.

A word of caution: This book is not meant to be an introduction to linear algebra for self-study or at the undergraduate level. There are good books specifically for that purpose, such as Linear Algebra and Its Applications by Gilbert Strang.

Mit dem Ende des Kalten Krieges Anfang der 90er Jahre und dem Abklingen des Kampfes der Ideologien begann die Suche nach neuen Identifikationskriterien aller beteiligten Staaten. Eine denkbare Alternative wäre die Rückkehr zu einem verstärkten Nationalismus, eine Identifikation durch den eigenen Staat. Allerdings wäre dies angesichts der fortgeschrittenen Vernetzung der Welt in allen Bereichen - also der Globalisierung - keine sonderlich realistische Lösung gewesen. Eine neue Alternative wäre die Identifikation durch eine Zivilisation gewesen, die im Zuge der Globalisierung eine realistischere Lösung bietet.
Meiner Meinung nach begann jedoch bereits vor dem Ende des Kalten Krieges ein Loslösungsprozess, bedingt durch unser heutiges Transportwesen und die „informations- und kommunikationstechnologische Dauerrevolution“ (Dürmatt 2003, S.16). Eine Loslösung der Identifikation von bestimmten Räumen. Die Kulturen der Zukunft, die Szene-Kulturen durchdringen die heutigen an den Raum gebundenen Kulturen. Szene-Kulturen sind z.B. eine bestimmte Sportszene (Surferzene, Fußballszene...) oder eine politisch-orientierte Szene (Globalisierungsgegner...). So lassen die Szene-Kulturen, die einst wichtige Identifikationskriterien, wie die Zugehörigkeit zu einem Staat, einer Region oder einer Zivilisation, langsam in den Hintergrund treten und neue Identifikationskriterien entstehen. Diese fragen nicht nach dem „Woher kommst du?“ sondern „Was machst du?“ bzw. „Wie ist deine Einstellung zu…?“. Im Folgenden will ich erörtern Warum und Wie diese Szene-Kulturen entstehen und warum das Wo nicht von belang ist. Zuerst werde ich die Begriffe „Raumgebundene Kultur“ und „Szene-Kulturen“ definieren und dann den Prozess des Loslösens von bestimmten Räumen betrachten. Anschließend betrachte ich dann die Ursachen, warum traditionelle Kulturen in den Hintergrund treten und Szene-Kulturen entstehen werden. Abschließend will ich das Verhältnis von raumgebundener Kultur und Szene Kultur untersuchen.
