Stephen J. Kirkland is a Stokes Professor at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. He is editor-in-chief of Linear and Multilinear Algebra and serves on the editorial boards of several other journals. Dr. Kirkland’s research interests are primarily in matrix theory and graph theory, with an emphasis on the interconnections between these two areas.

Michael Neumann was the Stuart and Joan Sidney Professor of Mathematics and a Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Neumann published more than 160 mathematical papers, mainly in matrix theory, numerical linear algebra, and numerical analysis.

Excellent book, but some areas left under-developed.

This is an excellent book that surveys magical experience in a scholarly way without being dull or dense. I have not read all the way through the William James book that became an important classic of sociology and psychology, so I cannot compare it to that book exactly. However, the strength of the book is that it summarizes and reviews in a concise way various magical experiences under useful headings. The descriptions regarding the differences between the Golden Dawn Western Hermetic Magic and what Crowley, Spare, and others developed is especially useful and interesting. The material on shamanism is also good. Since the authors tried to take a descriptive of approach (reporting what magicians say about their magic, rather than over analyzing)and did not rely on value judgements, it might have been a good idea to stick with current magical systems as opposed to, for example, descriptions of medieval magic; I say this because accounts of what witches did during the medieval and early modern period are problematic- the authors seem to gloss over the ways in which some types of magic and magical behaviors were deemed acceptable by some medieval theologians, or at least it is more complicated than the authors in this work have space to discuss. Also, a lot of attention is paid to Australian aboriginal experiences and field work- which may reflect the authors nationality and background. The chapter on earth religions is not extensive enough- I would have liked more details on how Wicca and Druidry and contemporary neo-Paganism are incorporating magic in a new way, and more sources regarding this than just quoting Starhawk. (for example, what about trance possession as a trend in modern paganism?) Still, a fine book to have on one's self to put things in perspective if you are interested in this topic and want a good, learned survey. Recommended.

Richard Hillary was born in Australia in 1919 and brought up in England. Oxford educated, he was a writer foremost who was also a fighter pilot. When World War Two came he joined 603 Sqn and became an ace in the Battle of Britain. His life changed when he was shot down in September 1940, suffering severe burns to his face and hands. During a long and painful recovery he wrote the wartime classic The Last Enemy, an outstanding literary contribution. Anxious to return to flying, he pushed himself to the limit and was killed when his Blenheim crashed in 'mysterious' circumstances on 8 January 1943. He was aged only 23.

He had by then become a legend, a courageous hero, not without his faults, around whom a cult following has developed. Over years, David Ross patiently researched all relevant papers and documents, including from the Richard Hillary Trust Archive in Oxford, and talked at length to Hillary's contemporaries. This eminently readable, first complete biography with many previously unseen photos sets the record straight, and now appears in paperback for the first time, with new photographic material.

David Ross is currently working on a definitive history of 603 (City of Edinburgh) Squadron R AUX F and his biography of Gerald Stapleton, Stapme, is also being published in 2002 by Grub Street.

Best Biography I've read

A biography of a fighter pilot and author.
This book expertly captures the emotions of the time in which it is set whilst giving us an in depth look at the life of one of our Battle of Britain heros.
It is extremely well researched and puts right many of the inaccuracies of previous publications. If you have read The Last Enemy, then this is a 'must read'. It will appeal to a broad spectrum; not only those interested in aviation, history or the lives of authors and pilots. This is not your standard military aviation book, it is full of facts, yes, but it is also an exciting, emotive and most of all, enriching read.
I have never read a book on squadron history but will definitely read this authors book to be published next year on No. 603 squadron (Richard Hillarys squadron based in Edinburgh).
Finally, don't be put off by the size of it....it's a great read with plenty of photos (some never seen in the public domain before)!

A superbly researched and written biography

Richard Hillary was a decorated fighter pilot who flew and fought in the Battle of Britain during the some of darkest days of World War II. He became an ace pilot and was shot down in September 1940 by enemy fire, experiencing severe facial burns. During a painful recovery he wrote the wartime classic, The Last Enemy under the pen name David Ross. He returned to flying but was killed in a Blenheim on January 8, 1943, at the age of 23. Richard Hillary is a superbly researched and written biography of a remarkable young man and highly recommended reading, especially for anyone with an interest in World War II, the Battle of Britain, and the young men who stood against a seemingly overwhelming tyranny.

Important and innovative book

With Neuropsychedelia, Langlitz establishes himself among the young and forward-looking social scientists engaging with the neuro and psy disciplines. The volume complements Eric Dyck's study on the psychedelic research in Canada in the 1950s and 1960s, and it is also an extremely novel case study for reading alongside Nikolas Rose and Joelle Abi-Rached's "Neuro". None of these alternatives are to be missed - but I'd say that Langlitz's stands apart from these others. A fine contribution. Enjoyable. Thoughtful. Smart.

Neuropsychedelia: The Revival of Hallucinogen Research since the Decade of the Brain

Nicolas Langlitz, author of Neuropsychedelia, is a German polyglot, who, though trained as a physician, detoured into medical history, and later into a PhD program in medical anthropology. He is presently Assistant Professor at the New School for Social Research in New York City. His book stems directly from his use of hallucinogens in his youth and his search for meaning in this experience. This is not a chronicle of his “trips” but a history of the revival of psychedelic science since the Decade of the Brain in the 90s. Langlitz devotes two chapters to this revival. The first is devoted to big questions. Where does the idea that hallucinogens mimic insanity come from? Is the brain a reducing valve? Are hallucinogens liberating, leading to a freer more autonomous society? And that is why some libertarians fund this research? Are they the first step towards Brave New World (Huxley’s dystopia) with government mandated happy pills? Or towards Island (Huxley’s utopia) where hallucinogens are psycholytic breaking down egos and merging people into a great sea of spirituality? A chapter devoted to “Swiss Psilocybin and US Dollars” limns a Switzerland somewhere between Big Sur and a bourgeois East German style repression. They had chemists and hippies, but it was libertarian bucks that catalyzed the psychedelic research which bucked the American War on Drugs.
Two chapters deal with Langlitz as participant/observer in two laboratories , one in Zurich, one in San Diego. In these, Langlitz unfurls the flag of anthropology and challenges the assumptions of the research. Are double-blind placebo based experiments on hallucinogens possible? Are the experiments contaminated by assumptions convenient to drug manufacturers? Psilocybin makes people hallucinate and crazy people hallucinate. Is a drug which cancels psilocybin hallucination sufficient to “cure” craziness? The variability of the human response to psilocybin due to the “set and setting” of the experiments is thrown up as a game spoiler. Can schizophrenia be boiled down to neurotransmitters? Since there are differences in the way that sane humans hallucinate WITHOUT hallucinogens, and there are differences in the way that humans hallucinate WITH hallucinogens, might there be differences in the way insane humans hallucinate? That is, reducing the issue to neurotransmitters seems very optimistic. Langlitz talks of “local biologies”, a locution certain to generate misunderstanding among biologists.
When it comes to experimentation on mice (Chapter 4), Langlitz suggests that it is wrongheaded, so to speak, to say that mice hallucinate in any way that is an appropriate model for humans. How can you model mental disease in (other) animals if all you have to observe is behavior? And if the model of the PPI (pre pulse inhibition) is germane to the effects of psilocybin on organisms, mice are decidedly different from humans. Oddly, Langlitz suggests that “set and setting” interfere with animal research just as it does with humans. Then there is the notion that the brain is a “reducing valve” which keeps us from being distracted by the world around us and that psilocybin opens the doors of perception (thanks Aldous!) flooding the helpless mind. But dammit, some dopers report that they can concentrate really, really, really hard on that mimosa blossom in the moonlight on the tree behind the barn-- despite the world’s true cacophony. Is psilocybin here the reducing valve?
The last two chapters are spent trying to figure out if the world has been changed more by hallucinogens than science. Science “disenchants” the world saying “that’s not magic, honey, that’s chemistry!” But is that enough? Maybe for every disenchantment science delivers us, Madison Ave offers us two “re-enchantments”? Can science tell us what to do? How to live? Hallucinogens are seen as the libertarian, anarchist tools which undermine the authority of religion and which make each of us the captains of our own spirituality. Will psycholytics make us better, dissolving those pesky egos? Will it make us more spiritual, more reverent of life itself? Or just more advanced cynics?

overly sophisticated German intellectualism.

Our civilization has largely held faith in the medicinal power of alcohol. The limitations of this are apparent, and largely tolerated. This book was interesting not for the psychedelic drugs themselves, but the comparisons of the democratic processes of Switzerland and those of the United States. There are profound differences between the cultures of these too countries. When America became the first country where most people had an automobile, we quickly passed prohibition of alcohol laws. Years later, even that Freedom Loving Icon Reagan deemed it prudent to raise the legal age to 21. America should probably not start passing out psychedelic drugs as frequently as Xanax and Prozac: We have too many cars, too many guns, and too many idiots. The new designer psychedelic drugs are even worse: they make people like Techno music(I have seen it in movies!)

Grade 10 Up-An alphabetical listing of people, places, court cases, books, terms, events, and issues. The signed entries are written by academics as well as people working for such institutions as the Center for Public Justice, the Center for Policy Analysis on Palestine, and the National Women's Christian Temperance Union. The writing is clear, objective, and to the point. Entries average half a page in length and include discussions of "conscientious objection," "prayer in public schools," William Penn, the Ku Klux Klan, Roe v. Wade, religion and the vote in various elections, and more. While there is plenty of information available on these topics, these articles offer a starting point for student research. Many entries include cross-references and further-reading suggestions of journal articles, periodical references, books, doctoral dissertations, and Web sites. The black-and-white photographs interspersed throughout are often dark and/or grainy; the black-and-white reproductions are of higher quality. There are also a few charts. A secondary purchase for most libraries.

This encyclopedia brings together "in one place 'the facts' about the people, groups, jurisprudence, forces, and phenomena that together tell the story of the interaction between religion and politics in America." A team of 135 scholars wrote the more than 600 entries, which focus on several themes, among them the roles played by religious organizations and beliefs in shaping American politics; religion and the Constitution; and the intersections between religion, political theory, and public policy.

The A-Z entries include discussions of the Abolitionist movement, Anti-Defamation League, Christian social ethics, Focus on the Family, Gay and lesbian marriage, and Raid on Waco, among other topics. Numerous men and women who had influence on the world of religion and politics, such as Ralph Abernathy, Mary Baker Eddy, Cotton Mather, and several U.S. presidents, are included. There are also entries for court cases that left their mark on the religious and political landscape of the U.S. Other entries cover different religious traditions, including Christian Science, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism. Length ranges from approximately half of a page to two pages. Many entries conclude with a list of further readings.

This work offers general information for the beginning researcher and could be used as a springboard to further research. It joins two similar-sounding but older titles. Encyclopedia of Religion in American Politics (Oryx, 1998) covers many of the same topics in its 700 short entries and also provides some supporting material, such as a collection of speeches and documents and a time line. Encyclopedia of Politics and Religion (Congressional Quarterly, 1999) offers a global perspective. Academic and larger public libraries that don't already have a resource on the relationship between politics and religion in the U.S., or that need to expand or update their holdings, might do well to include this newer volume in their collection. Paul Djupe received his Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis. He is currently a professor of political science at Denison University and the coauthor of Religious Institutions and Minor Parties in the United States. Djupe resides in Ohio. Laura Olson received her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is currently a professor of political science at Clemson University in South Carolina. She is the author and editor of several books, including Religion and Politics in America, Third Edition and Filled with Spirit and Power: Protestant Clergy in Politics.

Bahnwarter Thiel an excellent novella.

I am slow at reading German, so I haven't gotten very far in reading Bahnwarter Thiel, but it is very interesting. Fortunately, Gerhart Hauptmann's sentences are not very long, so that makes it a little easier to understand. It is enjoyable to read.
