Suspenseful Thriller that Blends Past and Present

Action? Check. Intrigue? Check. Thrilling? Check. Land's Strong Rain Falling is a fascinating, action-packed thriller that you won't be able to put down. The fifth, Caitlin Strong novel, it hints at enough of the previous books so readers have a bit of backstory for Caitlin, Cort Wesley, and his teenage boys, while providing a perfect one-book story for new readers to the series--like me.

Having read Land Blaine McCracken novel, Pandora's Temple, I knew he could spin a spellbinding story. But what drew me to Strong Rain Falling was Caitlin's profession as a fifth-generation Texas Ranger, along with her relationship with a former outlaw. As a history lover, having a novel that travels seamlessly between past and present provided me with the best of both worlds. And the twists and turns along the way encouraged me to keep turning the pages. I liked that Caitlin wasn't perfect. She has a bit of a reputation for being trigger-happy. Her relationship with a certain FBI agent isn't very pleasant. But in typical Texas Ranger fashion she gets the job done.

I'm definitely interested in going back to the beginning of this series and reading the other four. I need to know Caitlin's entire story. And I can't wait until another book in this series is released.

If you're interested in a thriller with tons of action, where the past as much as the present plays a role, this book is for you. If you enjoy Texas Ranger stories and novels about drug trafficking, it will also be you. And if you like a strong heroine, in what some might consider an unusual occupation, you're going to like Strong Rain Falling. I highly recommend it.

Jon Land's Caitland Stron does it again!!

Jon Land's last Caitlin Strong book captured and kept me on the edge of my seat with its dynamic confluence of past and recent history. Caitlin herself is a wonderfully strong character who is just beginning to understand the potential her life choices have for personal and moral conflict, yet she continues in her genetically defined (fourth generation Texas Ranger) way to solve her problems with a Colt.

Here the mystery reaches back to the actions of her grand-father and great-grand-father which impact the childhood of her partner's late wife, which in turn creates a world of vengeance and terror.

Land combines history with imagination - he KNOWS his Texas Rangers, and meshes historical characters with his fictional ones.

In keeping with the Texas Ranger historical style, there is much bloodshed. However, Caitlin and her self-appointed guardian will surprise you.

Great book, and great series.

I am new to the adventures of Texas Ranger Caitlin Strong. The minute I read that she is a modern-day Texas Ranger I knew this was going to be exciting. I just didn't know how exciting. For me the minute you say Texas Ranger I think of every Western I have ever read or seen and none of them were bad and I knew this would be no exception. "Strong Rain Falling" is one huge action-packed thriller from page one. A strong rain can overflow highways and destroy property. A high intensity situation can have the same effect as a strong rain. Ana Callas Guajardo wants to get revenge for an event from 1919 and she is just crazy enough to destroy the United States in the process. This is pure excitement. Mr. Land obviously likes to tell a good story,and this one is as good as it gets. You will not be disappointed with "Strong Rain Falling". It is a roaring adventure from start to finish. Now while I wait for the next Caitlin Strong novel I have four others I need to catch up on.

An excellent introduction, very accessible for students

Environmental Security: A Guide to the Issues (Contemporary Military, Strategic, and Security Issues)

Elizabeth Chalecki has produced a fantastic book. Environmental Security is a great introduction to the topic, covering a series of issues in a very readable manner. Most importantly, Chalecki does not try to "expand" notions of national security, but addresses the more traditional notions of security and how they are affected by environmental issues like water access, food production, and consequences of climate change. The book challenges traditionalist understandings on their own terms, and is a stronger work because of that.

I highly recommend this book for upper level undergraduate courses or graduate level classes.

Mit Sicherheit wird hier ein verkürztes, pessimistisch geprägtes Bildungsverständnis wiedergegeben. Dennoch spiegelt es den damaligen Zeitgeist wieder und kann als roter Faden durch diese Ausarbeitung mitbedacht werden. Diese Ausarbeitung soll kein Verlaufsprotokoll darstellen, sondern macht sich vielmehr zur Aufgabe aufgrund eines historischen Rückblicks durch drei exemplarische Studien den Begriff der Teilnehmerorientierung in seiner Bedeutung näher zu durchleuchten. Vorab wird dazu in Kapitel zwei auf die Relevanz von Teilnehmerorientierung als Methode der Erwachsenenbildung eingegangen und abschließend eine aktuelle Begriffsbestimmung von Teilnehmerorientierung vorgestellt. Dies ermöglicht ein breites und allgemeines Verständnis von dem, zumeist selbstverständlich, aber nur selten einhellig, interpretierten Begriffs der Teilnehmerorientierung. In Kapitel drei werden drei verschiedene Studien aus der frühen Adressatenforschung vorgestellt. Deren Kernaussagen werden in ihrem wesentlichen Zusammenhang dargestellt. Der Rückblick auf die Anfänge der Adressatenforschung verdeutlicht die Vielschichtigkeit des Begriffes der Teilnehmerorientierung. Innerhalb der Erwachsenenbildung gilt Teilnehmerorientierung als methodisch-didaktische Maxime. Die Diskrepanz zwischen dem Stellenwert, der dem Teilnehmenden im Weiterbildungsprozess zugesprochen wird und der Sichtweise derer, die Weiterbildung organisieren, stellt ein altes wie aktuelles Problem dar und wird in Kapitel vier, in Bezugnahme auf die Erkenntnisse aus den drei Studien, abschließend skizziert. Es wird sich zeigen, dass sich die didaktische Methode der Teilnehmerorientierung gewandelt hat und auch für die künftige Erwachsenenbildung ein zentrales pädagogisches Prinzip bleibt.

Why you should never "pick a fight with anyone who buys bandwidth by the geobyte"

I read and reviewed Steven Fink's previous book, Crisis Management: Planning for the Inevitable, and recall two chapters (13 and 14) in which he explained "controlling the message" and "handling a hostile press." What we have in this brilliant volume is all that Fink knew then and has since learned about effectively responding to these two challenges. As he observes, the two chapters were written "before the Internet explosion and the advent of never-ending 24/7 news cycles, cell phone videos, the runaway profusion of still emerging social media, ever-lurking-in-the-bushes paparazzi, blogs and websites devoted to 'gotcha' journalism, and electronic mob-mentality consumerism/activism." So, Fink needed to update and expand the material in those chapters to accommodate the major developments to which he refers.

Here is a partial list of the key issues he addresses. Please imagine that each is preceded by "How to...."

o React immediately to a crisis
o Articulate an appropriate response that is (key word) truthful
o Manage both internal and external perceptions of the facts that are known
o Avoid the most common mistakes
o Defer assignment of blame to focus on resolving the given crisis
o Shape the communication updates to stakeholder segments as well as media
o Deploy spokesperson(s)
o Manage social media
o Cope with crisis-induced stress
o Prepare for and (when appropriate) conduct post-crisis evaluation

Years ago, when Ann Mulcahy was named president and CEO of Xerox, she asked several of her closest friends and mentors for suggestions. She said the best advice she received was that she had three tasks: "Get the ox out of the ditch, find how it got in the ditch, and then make certain that it never happens again."

Keep in mind, Fink's focus in this book is on the communications portion of a much more comprehensive process that also includes contingency planning, for example, and allocation of readily available resources. He cites dozens of corporate exempla (for better or worse) of real-world crisis communications that include (in alpha order), Audi, Avery Denison, Bank of America, BP, Firestone Tire & Rubber, Johnson & Johnson/Tylenol, Pennsylvania State University/Paterno & Sandusky, PepsiCo, Susan B. Komen for the Cure, Toyota, and U.C.L.A. School of Medicine's Neuropsychiatric Institute. Don't expect a provision of silver bullets, recipes, quick fixes, etc. Rather, Fink creates a mosaic of especially important do's and don'ts for those who need an expert (if not "the definitive") guide for "managing the message" during a crisis.

I wish to conclude this brief commentary with three observations of my own. First, I strongly recommend that both of Fink's books be read in tandem. Crisis Management creates a context, a frame-of-reference, for Crisis Communications and the latter should be viewed as an update and expanded coverage of the material in Chapters 13 and 14 in Crisis Management. Also, it is impossible to over-prepare for a crisis, whatever its nature and extent may prove to be. Meetings convened should identify the 3-5 worst possible crisis and then focus on what to [begin italics] do [end italics] if one occurs. Finally, in that event, speed is imperative and truth is the currency of the realm. I agree with Steven Fink: "Don't hesitate. Rise to the occasion and take charge of your crisis with confidence, conviction, and character."

Not Just a Title for Business

I teach college-level interpersonal communication and know that this book is going to be a new in-class resource. The goal of Crisis Communications is to guide professionals who are in the throes of damage control over an incident (whether it is their fault or not). I know I can automatically utilize it for higher-order case studies and examples to challenge my students on properly messaging disasters with Fink's clear guidelines. I don't currently have a resource that enables me to take students into that level of thinking from a business perspective. I believe this book has even wider application, however, to teach about conflict management, proper assertive messaging, taking responsibility, and the ramifications of blame even in day-to-day interactions, both personal and professional. Bravo on a sole title that captures such a complex and vital topic.
