About the Author

Erin Jobst is an Assistant Professor at the Pacific University School of Physical Therapy, in Hillsboro, OR, where she teaches courses covering physiology, pathology, pharmacology, patient care skills and therapeutic exercise. She also has extensive practical experience working in an Acute Care Hospital.

She is co-author of Pharmacology for the Physical Therapist, and came on board midstream to complete four chapters, edit 16, and was a big reason for completion of the project.

Jobst will serve as the lead author for Physical Therapy Case Studies in Acute Care, and will also serve as lead Editor of the Physical Therapy Case Studies series.

The cases discussed take the reader through the clinical decision making process from evaluation tools to treatment options. Methods are well supported with research sited.

Dual Drigger, an octogenarian D-Day veteran, foils a bank robbery, leaving the two robbers dead. Then the old man is brutally murdered in his home. There are no forensics at the scene and no leads for Bo Handel, Caddo County, Texas, sheriff. A couple months later, one of Bo’s deputies, an African American, is shot and remains in critical condition. Bo is frustrated because once again he has little to go on, though he does note that Dr. Afton Spencer, the leader of a white supremacist movement, has quietly set up a compound outside of town. Spencer is an academic gone seriously off the tracks, spewing the ugliest of verbiage about Jews, blacks, Hispanics, and, well, any nonwhite. Bo doesn’t immediately link the Drigger murder, the bank robbery, the wounded deputy, and the arrival of the neo-Nazis, but he won’t be surprised if that’s where the evidence leads. Author Burton, who passed away in December 2011, had a keen eye for human inconsistencies and how they drive our actions. This is a fine small-town mystery sure to be enjoyed by Bill Crider and Steven Havill fans. --Wes Lukowsky

Racism Sparks a War in Milton T. Burton's Thrilling Texas Noir, "These Mortal Remains"

In Caddo County of Central East Texas, Sheriff Bo Handel is investigating a violent crime wave. An elderly WWII vet, Dual Driggers, has shot and killed two robbers at the Royal Coffee Shop. Several months later, he is found strangled in his home. The MO is similar to that of the unsolved strangulation death of Aaron Webern. A young girl, Crystal Henderson, is reported missing and presumed dead. The black chief deputy, Toby Parsons, has been shot and lies comatose. All of these crimes appear connected to the building of a white supremacist compound in Caddo County.

Milton T. Burton's "These Mortal Remains" is an action-packed sequel to his earlier novel, "Nights of the Red Moon" (Nights of the Red Moon). I was grabbed in the opening chapter when two meth head thugs are shot to death by an old coot when they attempt to rob the Royal Coffee Shop in Caddo County. From that moment onward, there is one violent scene after another. The shooting of Parsons sparks a lot of racial strife; consequently, a Reverend Al Sharpton-like character, Reverend Lucas Dawkins, descends upon the town, seeking the media in order to spread hatred and discontent. Meanwhile, Sheriff Handel questions Dr. Afton Spencer, who is building a neo-Nazi compound; his racist and pro-abortion beliefs are so extremely outlandish that they incited anger within me.

"These Mortal Remains" has an extremely complex, multi-character plot. One might say there are too many characters. However, they are all unique and vital to the plot. A multiagency task force, consisting of local police and DPS, FBI, DEA and ATF, unite in order to raid the Branch Davidian-like compound where neo-Nazis are believed to be storing illegal firearms. The novel provides a lot of description on police procedurals when it comes to performing raids, specifically on bars and compounds. Not only does Milton know how to write about hard-hitting violence, but he is very adept at pulling heart strings. I became teary-eyed when one character passes away during a shootout.

Besides violence, the novel contains a lot of romance and family drama. We learn that Sheriff Handel is dating the much younger Carla Wallace, his former deputy who is now a PI. We learn more about his family; for example, his son, Keith, a thoracic surgeon, is moving back home because his wife, Kristen, is a compulsive spender who has bankrupted them. Sheriff Handel's niece, Sheila Warbeck, is still a reporter for the "Daily Sentinel." Most importantly, we learn that Sheriff Handel is a pianist who majored in music but never graduated because, when his father died, he had to come home to run the family business and take care of his mom who was stricken with MS. Needless to say, Sheriff Handel is hero material.

This novel also has its humorous moments. Sheriff Handel refers to stingy, cantankerous, elderly Lester Prichard and his cronies as the DPS, not the Department of Public Safety, the Dead Pecker Society. They sit at the Texan Café and grumble and complain while drinking free coffee; but they provide the sheriff with an invaluable source of gossip. However, never mess with a member of the DPS. One never knows when they might be packing some heat. I would put Dual Driggers in that group. Two thugs are shocked when he pulls a gun on them. After all, these elderly citizens know they are near the end of their lives and don't have much to lose if convicted of manslaughter.

Why do intelligent people, who are provided with many opportunities and advantages, choose to become criminals? This question is explored throughout the plot. Jasper Sparks, a character who returns from one of Burton's earliest novels, "The Sweet and the Dead" (The Sweet and the Dead), has an extraordinary high IQ but was a ruthless villain before becoming a snitch. The ultra-racist Dr. Afton Spencer is also highly educated. In the end, it is believed that people, no matter how much they are intellectually gifted, choose to perform evil deeds because they enjoy evilness.

"These Mortal Remains" was published posthumously. After reading it, I must loudly proclaim that the Great Sheriff in the sky called Milton T. Burton home too soon. His legion of fans will greatly miss him. Fortunately, Burton left them with another awesome piece of Texas noir that is highly recommended.

Fans who crave more Texas noir may want to check out the outstanding novels written by promising new author, Tricia Fields {"The Territory" (The Territory: A Novel), "Scratchgravel Road" [Scratchgravel Road: A Mystery (Josie Gray Mysteries)] and the soon-to-be-published "Wrecked" [Wrecked: A Mystery (Josie Gray Mysteries)]}. They chronicle the adventures of police chief Josie Gray as she protects the small border town of Artemis from Mexican drug cartels and local miscreants.

Sheriff Bo Handel is back in "These Mortal Remains" by Milton T. Burton

Last seen in the excellent Nights Of The Red Moon sheriff Bo Handel of Caddo County, Texas returns in These Mortal Remains. Beauregard "Bo" Handel has been sheriff more than thirty years and brooks no interference from the fools in Austin or Washington. He knows the people of his southeast Texas county and they know him. He also knows that sometimes people due amazingly stupid things. Things that can get them killed.

That is exactly what happened to a pair of idiots by the name of Topper Smith and Mean Dean Bean. When they tried to rob the Royal early one morning, Dual Driggers refused to get on the floor like everyone else because of his arthritis. Then he pulled out a 45. Colt automatic and the man who had been on the beach at Normandy on D-Day made quick work of them before going back to eating his breakfast. While their crime spree is over, their deaths will be the first two dominoes to fall in a far reaching and complicated case that will interest those at the local, state and national level in various branches of law enforcement. This is the kind of case that can make or break careers under the harsh spotlight of the national media and Sheriff Bo Handel does not care. This is his county, his people, and he is going to do the job he was elected to do his way.

When Milton wrote fiction it was with honesty and conviction that not only provided one heck of a story, it also told cultural truths of the time of the book as well as today. It is also sadly true that Milton Burton is an author who is no longer with us as explained in the preface written by Texas author George Wier.

Reiches. Geht es um Erziehung, wird häufig der Bund deutscher Mädel (BDM) oder auch die Hitlerjugend (HJ) genannt. Für mich stellte sich die Frage, wann denn die Erziehung im Nationalsozialismus ihren Anfang nahm. War es im Kindergarten oder doch erst in der Schule. Diese Hausarbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, wie der Nationalsozialismus mit Säuglingen umgegangen ist und ob sich die allseits bekannt Erziehung zum Massenmenschen bereits in diesem Lebensabschnitt niederschlug. Ursprünglich war darüber hinaus noch die Beleuchtung der Vorschulerziehung vorgesehen. Da ich aber im Laufe des Ausarbeitens feststellte, wie umfangreich das Thema der Nationalsozialistischen Säuglingspflege ist musste ich leider davon Abstand nehmen. Im ersten Abschnitt werde ich die Erziehungsgrundsätze Hitlers vorstellen. Diese Grundsätze werden sich durch die gesamte Arbeit ziehen auch wenn ich nicht immer explizit darauf hinweise. Vor allem aber beschäftigt sich die vorliegende Hausarbeit mit den Erziehungsbüchern von Johanna Haarer. Deshalb folgt im zweiten Abschnitt eine kleine Abhandlung des Lebens von Johanna Haarer, verbunden mit der Geschichte der Haarer-Erziehungsbücher. Im dritten Abschnitt gehe ich auf die Stillpropaganda im 3. Reich ein, welche einen hohen Stellenwert in der Nationalsozialisten Säuglingspflege einnimmt um anschließend den Ernährungsrhythmus welcher den NS-Müttern vordiktiert wurde zu erläutern. Schlussendlich werde ich dann auf die Frage eingehen, welchen Sinn diese Methoden der Säuglingspflege für die Nationalsozialisten hatte. Dies geschieht im Abschnitt Beeinträchtigung der Mutter-Kind-Beziehung. Im wesentlichen habe ich mich auf drei Autoren gestützt. Auf Grund dessen, dass es sich hier um eine Seminarhausarbeit handelt habe ich davon Abstand genommen, sämtliche Sekundärliteratur auszuleihen, und verlasse mich auf die Angaben der drei Autoren. Zumal es sich hauptsächlich um Literatur aus den 20er, 30er und 40er Jahren handelt ist es sehr schwierig diese Literatur in den Bibliotheken zu finden.

About the Author

Michael Khonsari is the holder of the Dow Chemical Endowed Chair and Professor of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Louisiana State University where he directs the Center for Rotating Machinery (CeRoM). Professor Khonsari is a fellow of ASME, STLE, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He holds several patents and he has authored two books and over 240 archival journal articles, book chapters, and special publications. He is currently the chief editor of the ASME Journal of Tribology.

Mehdi Amiri earned his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Louisiana State University where he is currently a research associate in the Center for Rotating Machinery (CeRoM). His area of research is in the field of fatigue and fracture analysis. He holds one patent and has authored several journal publications. His research interests include thermal/fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, tribology, and failure analysis.

Diese „Investitionsentscheidung“ soll - dem ökonomischen Prinzip entsprechend - rational getroffen werden. Es soll unter gegebenen Alternativen diejenige gewählt werden, die die maximale Auszahlung verspricht, i. S. v. Arbeitsleistung und Erfolg. Insbesondere der Auswahl von Führungsnachwuchskräften kommt eine große Bedeutung zu. Der „War for talents“ ist zu einem viel zitierten Begriff geworden, der die Brisanz des Themas beschreibt. Unternehmen entwickeln immer neue Methoden, die Besten für sich zu gewinnen. Die Frage ist nur, wie die Besten tatsächlich identifiziert werden können. Trotz des Einsatzes bewährter Personalauswahlinstrumente kann nicht eindeutig determiniert werden, welche Leistungen ein Unternehmen tatsächlich erhält. In der Literatur wird die Unsicherheit bei Personalauswahlentscheidungen vermehrt unter dem Aspekt ungleich verteilter Informationen der Akteure diskutiert und somit wird ein verstärkter Bezug zur mikroökonomischen Analyse personalwirtschaftlicher Aufgaben hergestellt. Bislang war das Personalmanagement sehr stark durch eine verhaltenswissenschaftliche Ausrichtung gekennzeichnet und von „Ökonomie nur Spurenelemente“ zu finden. Im Zuge der Weiterentwicklung der Mikroökonomie und der Abkehr von der Prämisse vollkommener Märkte, von denen vollständige und kostenlose Informationen angenommen werden, ist der Weg frei für realistischere mikroökonomische Analysen von Märkten, die tatsächlich durch zahlreiche Informationsasymmetrien gekennzeichnet sind. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden Erklärungsansätze, die sich auf Informationsasymmetrien beziehen, auch unter dem Begriff „Informationsökonomik“ zusammengefasst. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit soll der Prozess der Auswahl von Führungsnachwuchskräften aus informationsökonomischer Sicht analysiert werden. Den theoretischen Bezugsrahmen bildet die Prinzipal-Agenten-Theorie, deren Gestaltungsempfehlungen im Vordergrund stehen. Es soll der Fragestellung nachgegangen werden, ob diese zur Effizienz des Auswahlprozesses beitragen. Dieser Analyse vorangehend sollen die Begriffe Rekrutierung und Führungskraft bestimmt werden. Danach soll die hier fokussierte Gruppe der Führungsnachwuchskräfte zu Führungskräften, insbesondere Topmanagern, abgegrenzt werden. Im Anschluss daran erfolgt eine Erläuterung der Grundzüge der Prinzipal-Agenten-Theorie.
