Manditory reading for the serious electron microscopist

This book develops the Cowley-Moodie multislice approach to electron diffraction, beginning with the the Kirchhoff integral as applied to Fresnel diffraction. Cowley refers to this theoretical technique as the "Physical Optics" approach--an apt description given the fact that he models the diffracting crystal as a stack of atomic planes (or slices) where each atomic plane acts as a Fresnel lens. I once asked John Cowley how he came to envision such an approach--and his reply was that it was "obvious". Well, what was once obvious to John Cowley may not be obvious to rest of us, so a good bit of preliminary study is in order before tackling this book. Accordingly Cowley recommends a good book on Fourier Optics as preparation for reading his book, with Goodman's text as an example. I did indeed find that Goodman's text provided the necessary groundwork.Introduction to Fourier Optics In addition, however, I should add that a good general understanding of Fourier transforms is needed as well--and for that reason I would also recommend Bracewell's book on that topic.The Fourier Transform & Its Applications

I should mention that other aspects of diffraction are also discussed in this book, including a good introduction to the Bethe's dynamically theory of electron diffraction (i.e the Bethe matrix/equation) as well as insight into diffraction from polymers.

Tough reading

The author of this passed away several years ago, and I was one of the few privileged enough to work with and publish with John M. Cowley. As one of the leaders in the field of electron microscopy, it is to be expected that he publish a textbook in the field. I received my copy from him personally in the summer of 1997, and spent the next year or so reading through it. The book is quite advanced, and should not be attempted by someone without a strong undergraduate training in physics and mathematics. The text is written for those who already have some knowledge of the subject, and I would not recommend it for someone new to the subject of diffraction or microscopy. As a textbook, it is appropriate for graduate students, and is well done in that the sample problems can be finished without the need of a computer. Overall, an OK book from a great author.

This book was recommended as a supplimentary text for our mechanics course. This book is 100% better than any other mechanics book I've looked at. The explanations are very clear, especially for non-inertial & rotational reference frames and the derevations for conservation of energy, momenta, and angular momenta (integrals of motion).

Includes extensive section on Euler angle derivation and tops. The examples in this text are quite difficult (more difficult than your typical undergraduate text), but they are all solved with partial work, so they are still helpful for studying.

Overall a clearly written text with good examples and excellent derivations.

Read this book as a test: if you love it, you really love the beautiful science of Physics. Try to read it if you are an undergraduate. If you can't understand it yet, never mind. Just try again later. If love to Physics is what you feel, it will be a great day in your life when you start to understand something from Landau.

How much was archaeology founded on prejudice? The Archaeology of Race explores the application of racial theory to interpret the past in Britain during the late Victorian and Edwardian period. It investigates how material culture from ancient Egypt and Greece was used to validate the construction of racial hierarchies. Specifically focusing on Francis Galton's ideas around inheritance and race, it explores how the Egyptologist Flinders Petrie applied these in his work in Egypt and in his political beliefs. It examines the professional networks formed by societies, such as the Anthropological Institute, and their widespread use of eugenic ideas in analysing society.

Archaeology of Race draws on archives and objects from the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology and the Galton collection at UCL. These collections are used to explore anti-Semitism, skull collecting, New Race theory and physiognomy. These collections give insight into the relationship between Galton and Petrie and place their ideas in historical context.

I have the hard dopy of this fascinating and important work. Enlightened, yet difficult to swallow the early racial bias' of family relations, I can at the very least now say that the latter generations have been civil rights activists wth minds like "open parachutes", no matter their personal endeavors...interesting however, the fact that these latter generations have persued life sciences in addition to civil rights law & enforcement. And this goes for us women too, from very early in life. Anti-semitic and racial bias still exist in "the overtly confident ignorants" unfortunately. With outstanding and deeply researched works as this by Author Debbie Challis we hope to continue to break glass ceilings existant today. I raise my challis to her huge and seminal contributions to this emerging area of life sciences. I wish I could meet her...(I'd show her my hard copy of this book, exposing the sin of plethoric margin notes...I love her work!)

The first general texts on clay mineralogy and the practical applications of clay, written by R.E. Grim, were published some 40-50 years ago. A large volume of literature has accumulated since then but this information is scattered and not always accessible. The Handbook of Clay Science assembles the vast literature on the divers aspects that make up the discipline of clay science. The topics covered range from the fundamental structures and properties of clays and clay minerals, through environmental , health and industrial applications, to analysis and characterization by modern instrumental techniques. There are also chapters on clays and microorganisms, layered double hydroxides, zeolites, cement hydrates, and the genesis of clay minerals, as well as the history and teaching of clay science. No available modern book in the English language is as comprehensive and wide-ranging as this Handbook.

I purchased this book as a source of reference for my own book on minerals for health which I am writing now. it is difficult to over-estimate the wealth of scientific information in it. It is comprised of a series of well-selected research materials and articles about clay minerals written over a number of decades. The book covers all the subjects I am interested in. It is a great source of reference for people interested in clays and their numerous properties and applications. Difficult to over-estimate.
