When Frederick Jackson Turner analyzed the significance of the Frontier in American history, he claimed that the true American character was not influenced by Europe, but built by the constant, strenuous interaction with and the heroically endured hardships of nature’s wildness, which presented itself to the pioneers along the frontier line up until 1890, when the frontier was considered officially closed (Turner 1893). Accordingly, nature and wilderness play an important role in American history, character, and literature. Wilderness visualized as trees or the woods in general, symbolizes a lawless place and, thus, not only allowing for the idea of beasts but also of criminals living there. The uncanny in this picture is obvious and allows for mystifications quite a lot. Besides symbolizing a place of evil, wilderness has also been a space for the individual, most evident in the Puritan idea of expelling non-conformist people, sinners, from the community and sending them to exile into the woods. In this regard, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Scarlet Letter and its adulterous protagonist Hester Prynne serve as a perfect example from literature.
In this instant it becomes clear, that wilderness and civilization serve as binary oppositions, that have been primarily favored as neatly separated categories in the Puritan thinking. Civilization has been praised as the ideal, refining, and humane state, which can only be realized in the community and its democratic institutions. The missionary thought of bringing civilization to the continent and, thus, taming the wilderness, evoked a new idea: that of Manifest Destiny. Dem herausragendem Werk „Die protestantische Ethik und der Geist des Kapitalismus“, sowie den darauf anschließenden Werken der „Wirtschaftsethik der Weltreligionen“. Es sollen die Hauptthesen des Zusammenhanges der protestantischen Ethik mit der Entfaltung des kapitalistischen Geistes besprochen werden. Bei der Betrachtung des Werkes „Die Wirtschaftethik der Weltreligionen“ kann es nicht Sinn sein, jede von Max Weber behandelte Religion zu untersuchen. Vielmehr versuche ich Max Webers Vorgehensweise, auch am Beispiel des Buddhismus, darzulegen. Dazu müssen aber im Vorfeld einige wichtige Begriffe definiert werden, die Max Weber immer wieder vorträgt und benutzt.

Jhd. , 10 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Mit seinen Kurzgeschichten um den Hobbydetektiven C. Auguste Dupin, oder wie er sie selbst nennt „tales of ratiocination“, hat Edgar Allan Poe zweifellos den Beginn eines neuen Genres initiiert. Die Detektivgeschichte war geboren und fand viele Nachahmer. Wenngleich mehrere Kurzgeschichten Poes Charakteristika der Detektivgeschichte beinhalten, sind es doch nur drei Geschichten, die heute zu den „wahren“ ihrer Gattung zählen,The Murders in the Rue Morgue(1841),The Mystery of Marie Roget(1842) undThe Purloined Letter(1844). Sie unterscheiden sich von ersten Versuchen, wieThe Oblong Box(1844) undThou Art the Man(1844), vor allem durch die Erzählperspektive. Während bei letzteren der Erzähler der Geschichten zugleich derjenige ist, der das Rätsel löst, gibt es bei den „wahren“ Detektivgeschichten einen Erzähler und einen Detektiven mit scheinbar übermenschlichen analytischen Fähigkeiten. Der Erzähler fungiert sozusagen als Vermittler zwischen diesem Detektiv und dem Leser. Anhand der drei genannten Kurzgeschichten ist deutlich Poes Entwicklung des Genres zu erkennen.The Purloined Letterschließt die Trilogie um den Detektiv Dupin ab und wird meist auch als ausgereiftestes Werk in dieser Reihe betrachtet. Poe hat mit vielen seiner Kurzgeschichten und Gedichte die Leser vor große Rätsel gestellt. Die Detektivgeschichten stechen jedoch in einer Eigenschaft besonders hervor; der Leser fühlt sich dem nahezu allmächtigen Protagonisten Dupin unweigerlich geistig unterlegen. Eben dieser besticht dazu noch durch seine fast schon narzisstische Arroganz, die ihn zwar einerseits zu einer faszinierenden literarischen Figur macht, andererseits aber nicht unbedingt Sympathien in jedem Leser weckt. Zudem erscheinen viele Ereignisse und Situationen zu zufällig, gar verdächtig. Einige Autoren sind sogar der Meinung, Poe führe den Leser mit seinen Dupin-Geschichten gründlich an der Nase herum. Sie gehen sogar so weit zu behaupten, Dupin sei nicht nur einfach der harmlose Detektiv der Geschichten, sondern der wahre Täter und ein Mittel Poes, um als Leser auf unsere Leichtgläubigkeit aufmerksam zu machen. Diesen Thesen soll in der nachfolgenden Arbeit nachgegangen werden. Es soll gezeigt werden, an welcher Stelle die Vermutungen und Verdächtigungen begründet sind und an welcher nicht. [...]

The tone is academic, citing sources throughout, with lengthy bibliographies, an austere design, just a few black-and-white pictures, and no page ornamentation. Each book discusses the sport’s history, equipment needs, and the science behind the sport while also featuring short biographies of the important athletes past and present. The author of Rock Climbing is a climber herself, and that authority comes through, but so does her British university voice (“Those who climb in areas such as Yosemite are thus often termed ‘crack climber’”), perhaps making this more appropriate for a scholarly audience. Victoria Robinson, PhD, is reader in sociology at the University of Sheffield, UK. Her research interests are extreme sport, rock climbing in particular; gender and sexualities; and men and masculinities. Her published works include Everyday Masculinities: Male Identity and Rock Climbing; Heterosexualities: From Theory to Practices; and Maculinities in Transition. She is also coeditor, with D. Richardson, of the series Genders and Sexualities in the Social Sciences. She received her doctorate at the University of Manchester, UK.
