Brook Blevins did wonderful research on the book "Ghost of the Ozarks. A true mystery of a people time and place. It was especially intresting for me because some of my family was involved and lived in Mountain View at that time.

Speechless

Just months before Black Monday would send a country spiraling into the Great Depression, drifter Connie Franklin was murdered and his teenage fiancee raped in the remote hillsides of the Arkansas Ozarks.

After five local men were arrested for the crimes, dozens of reporters flocked to the hole-in-the-wall town of Mountain View, Arkasas - a place yet to be put on the electricity grids and offered its residents only one long-distance telephone line; where Pioneer justice was dispatched in the middle of the night upon those deemed to be in need of moral adjustments and moonshiners were considered to be among the elite.

If the backwardsness of Stone Countians, with their superstitions and confusing theories about the crimes, wasn't enough to grab headlines, the man who entered the Courtroom during the trial and claimed to be the murder victim - and Stone County gained notoriety, even if not in the nicest light.

But was this man identified as Marion Franklin Rogers really Connie Franklin? Or was he a just a former mental patient being used as a tool for acquittal? Would Tillar Ruminer's bethrothed actually turn out to be just another man with a wife and children at home?

Regular readers of my blog know I'm crazy about historical true crime and have read some pretty fantastic books over the years but Ghost of the Ozarks: Murder and Memory in the Upland South has to be the BEST, by far.

Brooks Blevins, a Professor at Missouri State University, provides a richly detailed account of the trial that put Mountain View, Arkansas, on the map in his 2012 historical true crime Ghost of the Ozarks: Murder and Memory in the Upland South. Using newspaper archives, Court documents, and the stories passed through the generations, Blevins creates not only a book that's enjoyable to read but should earn a permanent spot in libraries and history and civics classrooms across America.

Let me be frank, I'm not even sure how to review Ghost of the Ozarks. Any review I give is going to be an understatement. The only thing I can think to say which might do it justice is this: there is so much detail and research, compiled from so long ago, and pieced together for such an incredible and beautifully told story, that I recommend readers make sure you have the time to not only read it, but savor it.

Simply put: if I could had to give Ghost of the Ozarks a rating of one to five stars, I'd give it ten. Yeah, it's THAT good.

In the FLESH...

My book arrived two days ago and I have not finished it yet. I am an Ozarkian and wanted to read this story...parts of my early life involved settlements that were similar and seemed caught in time. Since I remembered some of that history, it makes it more interesting to me. Outsiders may have always been judgemental about the Ozarks, but it is truly a wonderful, history-rich place. Mr. Blevins is an excellent writer, and OH! the incredible amount of meticulous research he has done. Maybe my own brain is kind of fried due to stressful time of year, but there are times when reading that I had to stop and re-read what I had just read over and over again. For me, I wish that the writing had been a little more economical...sometimes the sentences seem long, or the material is repeated (especially in the Prologue). It is somewhat confusing to the reader to keep all these trains of thought going. That being said, I STILL love the book, the subject matter, and I highly recommend it.

My grandmother’s seventh husband, the one with the title, is the one she remembers most fondly. We call him “the one with the title” because he was the Mattress King of Canarsie. But even a self-appointed title, my grandmother always says, is a title nonetheless.
He’s the one who left her the estate out in the Hamptons—the one where we’re staying this summer—but that’s not why she remembers him as her favorite. It’s because, she says, he was a true gentleman, not a cad the way most men are nowadays, and he knew how to treat a lady like a lady. He would open doors and tell you how beautiful you looked. He would stand up when a woman entered a room or left a table. He would never let a woman pay. Never let a woman leave a party without seeing her home. Things that delighted my grandmother to no end, and about which I’m still forming an opinion.
The doctors told us that the Mattress King simply died of old age. There was nothing we could have done, they said. Nothing we could have prevented. They were trying to comfort us. Then the youngest doctor of the bunch, probably still a resident, discreetly pulled me aside to warn me that oftentimes, when an older person dies, his or her “mate” follows soon after, having succumbed to grief. So, clutching my hand, he told me that I should mentally prepare myself for what may come. I laughed out loud. Clearly, these doctors had never met my grandmother.
Her sixth husband was a former teen idol. I’m not going to say who he was, but you know him. Your mother knows him, too. He died three weeks after getting a diagnosis of mouth cancer. A lifelong cigar smoker, he puffed away right until his very last day. My grandmother always said that he died in the best possible way, if there is a “best possible way.” You find out you’re dying, say good-bye to all your loved ones, get your affairs in order, and then you’re out. Quick and easy. No long suffering. No sudden shock.
If anyone is an expert on the best way to die, it’s my grandmother. She’s buried six husbands already and she’s only seventy-six. There’s still plenty of time for her to find someone else, marry him, and have him die on her watch. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for dating my grandmother, but she’s always got men lining up, so I guess it hasn’t exactly cramped her style.
My grandmother’s fifth husband—the prince from a tiny French municipality just west of Monaco—died in a freak hang gliding accident while they were on vacation in Majorca. We called him “the one with the title” until the Mattress King came along. Now we just call him the Prince, or “the man formerly known as my husband,” in my grandmother’s case. She didn’t really love him. Not much, anyway. To hear her tell it, she was simply caught up in the moment. I should mention here that this was in the sixties and that it was a Grace Kelly moment she was caught up in.
My grandmother was off shopping for pearls when the news broke. The French newspapers went absolutely crazy over the fact that, upon hearing the news of her husband’s demise, she completed her purchase of the sixteen-inch double-strand she’d been trying on. (“He was dead,” she later said of the controversy. “It wasn’t like he was going anywhere.”) To this day, she is still persona non grata in certain parts of the South of France.
Some people say that it was my grandmother who killed her fourth husband, the Senator, but that was never proven. Even though he died in a room full of four hundred Republican contributors, there was not one witness to support the allegation. But my grandmother knew what happened that night. And she told me.
It was just a few well-chosen words that brought down the Senator, and with him a legacy of three generations—his father, his father’s father, and him. All United States senators by the time they’d reached forty. All staunch Republicans. Quite a feat for a woman who hardly ever voted.
The Senator himself had a kid at Yale, just biding his time until he could claim his birthright, his seat in the United States Senate. Junior the Third had considered everything in setting himself up for his rightful place in the family dynasty. He’d befriended all the right people, dated the right women, and volunteered for all the right candidates during high school and college. Of course, he also got a coveted spot in the Order of Skull and Bones, Yale’s secret society, which has produced at least ten U.S. senators and three presidents. Even if two of them were George Bush Senior and Junior, it’s still impressive.
But for all of his planning, even Junior the Third couldn’t have seen my grandmother coming. It’s her eyes, I think. They lull people into a false sense of security. A faint blue that looks violet in certain light, they make my grandmother look sweet. Angelic, almost. And she’s anything but. They should have seen her coming that night—her eyes lined in black liquid liner, lashes glistening with two coats of mascara. But they didn’t. The Senator smiled broadly as my grandmother walked over to him. Five minutes later he was dead.
Seems old grandma threatened to expose the fact that the Senator, for all of his preaching on family values and America’s moral compass, was gay. Upon hearing her threat, the Senator grabbed his chest and promptly fell to the ground, never to get back up again. Now, you must understand, my grandmother was not actually upset about the fact that the Senator had married her under false pretenses. “You can’t expect your husband to tell you the truth about everything,” she would say. But she was rather peeved when she found out that she wasn’t drawing the same weekly salary her predecessor got for her years of service. My grandmother is nothing if not business savvy.
Her third husband, the Italian race car driver, was the one with the most passion. Everything about their relationship was an extreme: their fights were the harshest, their makeups the most delicious. He was the one who taught her to follow her heart. And he was the one who died the quickest into their marriage—just four months to the day. Ironically, he died in a simple household accident when he slipped on a bar of soap in the shower and hit his head on the faucet. They do say that the majority of accidents happen in the home.
My grandmother’s second husband was my grandfather, my mother’s father. He was a trusts and estates lawyer from a good family. A solid man. A good provider. The type of man I should be looking for, she’d say.
My grandfather died in a car accident at the hands of a drunk driver when my mother was twelve years old. That was when, my grandmother believes, her run of bad luck started. You see, she’s always blamed herself for what happened to him that night:
It was well past 10:00 p.m. when my grandmother got a craving for an Ebinger’s black-and-white cake. They were already in for the night, already had my mother tucked into her bed and asleep. There was no reason for my grandfather to have been on the road that late. No reason for him to be on the corner of Front Street and Broadway, car idling at a red light like a big bull’s-eye. But it was a romantic gesture for him to indulge my grandmother in this way—she often said that she knew they were perfect for each other the moment they shared their first Ebinger’s. When he only wanted to eat the vanilla half and she would only eat the chocolate, she just knew. A match made in heaven. My grandmother still can’t look at cake without getting all misty.
In the end, she outlived them all. Just about every husband. The only one who did not widow her was her first. The one who looked like Rhett Butler. They ran away and got married when she was just sixteen. The details have always been fuzzy, but I do know that he was the only one who broke her heart.
Some people would call a woman like her unlucky. Others might call her cursed. But to me, she’s just Grandma.

My grandmother’s been there for me through everything. She stood proudly as I was sworn in at the New York State Bar; she lent me her shoulder as she nursed me through my first broken heart. She helped me pick out my clothes for my first day of school.
My mother, on the other hand, couldn’t be bothered with such parochial things. She’s a world-class photojournalist, so her life consists of constant movement. It’s served her well—she has the Pulitzer to prove it—but I think she sometimes uses work as an excuse. A way to get out of commitments she has changed her mind about.
I know this because I do it, too. Sometime into my first year of law school, when I had so much work that I couldn’t keep a set plan to save my life, I realized that no one ever balked when I broke plans because I had to study. They knew the drill, they knew how punishing the hours could be in law school. So they’d always let it slide.
I began taking advantage. Too tired to go out? Plead moot court. Want to skip that movie with a college friend you wish you hadn’t kept in touch with? Cry about how many pages you have to read before criminal law class at 8:00 a.m.
Looking back on my childhood, I wonder how much my mother used this little trick of mine. There was the skipped third-grade play when I was cast as the second lead. My grandmother sat beaming from the front row, but my mother was “stuck on assignment” in the Soviet Union. Or my high school graduation, when my mother was “stuck in an editing bay” for a Ronald Reagan retrospective. ABC News was using over twenty images that she’d shot during the Iran-Contra affair, and her contract stipulated final creative control. Her images couldn’t be trusted in just anyone’s hands, she would later tell me, as I took off my cap and gown and folded them quietly in my lap.
In my heart of hearts, I know she did it all the time, used work as an excuse. A way to avoid reality. I know it because we’re so much the same. I wish we weren’t, but we are.
My grandmother and I are not the same, not by a long shot, and maybe that’s the reason we’re so close. My grandmother has an entirely different set of values, a different set of skills, and I like to think that we learn a lot from each other. She finds it charming the way I take my work seriously and always strive to be the best. She just doesn’t think it’s particularly important. My work, that is. She’s the kind of woman who thinks that letter writing is an important art. The type who still thinks that penmanship is a very valuable skill for a woman to have. (Hers, of course, is impeccable.) But more important, and more to the point, she is a woman who has never in her life held down a real job.
My grandmother attributes much to her feminine wiles. She thinks I need to work on mine.

Boring and unrealistic

I borderline hated this book and don't know why I wasted my time to finish reading it. Hannah is childish and not very likeable. Seriously? She lets 14 year old Hunter take her on a date where he drives the car and then she lets him drink beer? This is a stupid book that doesn't make any sense. I just can't relate or get into any of the characters. I guess the recipe to a happy life is to be rich, immature, get pregnant, smoke pot with your dying mother while you are pregnant, have a rich lawyer fall in love with you (not the father of your baby) and live happily ever after. Have a wealthy grandmother, then marry a rich man

The recipe for a happy life, according to this novel?
- Take twelve(!) weeks of paid vacation from your job
- Spend that summer with your incredibly wealthy (and beautiful) grandmother in the Hamptons (she got rich by marrying rich men, who then died of natural causes)
- Get to know your neighbors by visiting their yachts. You, of course, look great in a bikini.
- Enjoy your grandmother throwing you expensive parties and taking you shopping (when not partying, be pampered by her five servants)
- Realize that happiness does not come from loving a poor musician, nor by looking down on people who have trust funds.
- Most importantly, when a handsome lawyer (with a huge trust fund) falls madly in love with you, play hard to get, then accept his advances
Yeah, I think that kind of summer would cheer most people up.

Recipe for A Happy Life

Hannah is a successful lawyer in NYC with a cute musician for a boyfriend. But her seemingly perfect life falls apart. So she escapes to her grandmother's place in the Hampton's. While there, she begins to see what truly makes her happy.

I thought it was an okay beach read. And while I found the grandmother to be a character, I did find the whole old-fashioned dame whose whole life seems to be centered on shopping and on wearing the right outfit to be a bit much. It kind of annoyed me that Hannah admired her grandmother (whose claim to fame was acquiring 6 husbands and their estates) more than her mother who was an award winning photojournalist. Due to that, I just couldn't really connect to Hannah as much as I wanted to.

Der preußische Adel erlebte durch Krieg, Revolution und die Krisen der Weimarer Republik einen bis dato unerlebten politischen, ökonomischen und sozialen Machtverlust. Das Selbstverständnis und die materielle Basis Tausender Adliger wurde erschüttert, eine „Welt zerbrach.“ Nur eine Minderheit konnte ihren Status wahren, die Mehrheit wurde berufslos. Fast allen Adligen, sowohl privilegierten, wie sozial abgestiegenen, war eine weitgehende Ablehnung des Weimarer Systems und der Wunsch nach Errichtung eines autoritären politischen Systems, in dem sie selbstverständlich eine führende Stellung einnehmen wollten, gemeinsam. Allgemein wurde dies in dem Wunsch eines „Ruck nach Rechts“ zum Ausdruck gebracht.
In den Ansichten, wie eine solche Veränderung erreicht werden könnte und wie das zu errichtende neue System konkret aussehen sollte, waren hingegen große Unterschiede vorhanden. [...] Je tiefer der soziale Abstieg des Betroffenen war, desto stärker die Ablehnung Weimars und das Engagement gegen die Republik. Je nachdem, ob der betreffende Adlige seine Sozialisation vor 1914 oder erst danach erhalten hatte, neigte er mehr oder weniger stark alten elitär-monarchischen Ideen oder der Neuen Rechten zu.
Mit den Adligen, die in der DAG oder im Herrenclub organisiert waren, denen die in der Reichswehr unterkamen und denen, die ihre Stellung auf dem Land sichern konnten, ist ein bedeutender Teil des preußischen Adels in die Analyse eingeflossen. Dieses Bild kann dennoch nicht repräsentativ genannt werden, da viele Adlige von der Forschung noch gar nicht erfasst wurden. Dafür war der preußische Adel viel zu heterogen. [...]
Retten, was zu retten ist, dürfte das Hauptmotiv gewesen sein.
Aber wenn weite Kreise des Adels in mehr oder weniger enge Beziehungen zur NSDAP traten und völkisches Gedankengut aufnahmen, dann muss auch die Rolle des Adels bei Hitlers Machtergreifung anders bewertet werden. Die adlige Kamarilla um Hindenburg handelte eben nicht nur im Sinne der eigenen Machtinteressen, sondern konnte bei der geplanten Errichtung eines autoritären Regimes auch mit breiter Unterstützung oder zumindest Sympathie von der Mehrzahl ihrer Standesgenossen rechnen.
[...] Dies war, wie sich bald zeigte, ein verhängnisvoller Irrtum, der nicht nur den totalen Machtverlust und weitgehende Diskreditierug des deutschen Adels nach 1945 zur Folge hatte, sondern diesen auch an den Rand des Aussterbens gebracht hatte.

Yet another strong Innes thriller...but a family tree would have helped!

You wouldn't think stamp collecting would form the basis of a thriller, but in Hammond Innes' hands anything is possible. The story revolves around English solicitor and stamp enthusiast Roy Slingsby, who discovers a collection of rare South Pacific stamps when conducting a routine valuation for the mysterious Prenna Holland. Little does he know that this stamp will soon find him travelling halfway across the world to Bougainville, becoming embroiled in arms running, a potential political coup, a bitter family conflict, and taking an increasing personal interest in the lovely Prenna.

Fans of Hammond Innes will find plenty to love here. The usual Innes character types are here; the "everyman" protagonist, the strong-willed heroine, the near-manically driven antagonist who may or may not be a true villain. In typical Innes fashion, the focus on these intriguing and all-too-human characters is often just as important as the action and plot. And like all his best books, there is a very strong attention to detail and realism, and the sense of the environment being almost a character in itself. The South Pacific on display here is not the tourist-guide portrayal of endless blue waters and palm trees. Instead we are shown a world of copper mining, constant rain, mud, and volatile politics, where Cargo Cult and tribal loyalty means much more than nationalism. Setting the conflict in Bougainville, geographically part of the Solomon Islands but politically part of Papua New Guinea, adds to the realism; in the three decades since this book was published, this region has been the site of several conflicts, uprisings, and civil wars.

However, I do have one problem with the book; it becomes increasingly difficult to keep track of all the different members of the Holland family. The inter-personal conflict between the three generations of Hollands forms a simmering tension throughout the book, and a family scandal forms a final explosive twist and revelation. But I sometimes found it difficult to keep track of who was who, especially when characters begin referring to family members by nicknames...you find yourself constantly having to look back to remember whether "The Colonel" is the same as "The Old Man", and whether this was supposed to be Prenna's father, grandfather, uncle, or bastard relative. Maybe it's just me, but perhaps Innes could have made this a bit clearer by including a family tree or something.

For this reason, I found the "family scandal" sub-plot didn't quite have the payoff it should have. But the remainder of the book, exploring the political, personal, and environmental tensions on the island, is standard high-quality Innes stuff. Recommended for all Innes fans....just make sure you keep a paper and pen handy to keep track of the Hollands.

Not as good as The Wreck of the Mary Deare

I couldn't get into this book. There were too many details about stamps. Since I am not a stamp collector, I missed the import of the collection cited in the book. I thought this discussion detracted from the book, so finally I flung it down. Maybe I'll pick it up again, after I've re-read the Wreck of the Mary Deare--it's an excellent mystery.

Prosperity did not return, and he left office under the shadow of failure. Grover Cleveland radically changed his approach in his second (non-consecutive) term. Previously he had held back from interference with lawmakers; on his return to office, he aggressively used presidential power to bend Congress to his will. Now seen as an asterisk, Cleveland consolidated presidential authority over appointments, removals, vetoes, foreign affairs, legislation, and more. Jimmy Carter, too, proves surprisingly significant. In two debt-ceiling crises and battles over the Panama Canal treaty, affirmative action, and the First Amendment, he demonstrated how the presidency's inherent capacity for efficiency and energy gives it an advantage in battles with Congress, regardless of popularity. Gerhardt explains the many things these and ten other presidents have in common that explain why, in spite of any of their excesses, they have become forgotten chief executives.

About the Author

Michael Gerhardt is Samuel Ashe Distinguished Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. A nationally recognized authority on constitutional conflicts, he has testified in several Supreme Court confirmation hearings, and has published five books, including The Power of Precedent.

So many errors...I wasn't sure I could trust it

I just finished reading the book The Forgotten Presidents: Their Untold Constitutional Legacy. In it, author Michael Gerhardt details 13 presidents who fit the general descriptor of "forgotten" and explains why they should be more memorable. He restricts himself to just their interpretations of the Constitution, which is too bad, as he misses so much else to discuss. Regardless, part of the fun is Gerhardt's rationale for which presidents he chose. After reading his book, I agree with his choices, and I'm not going to go into his reasonings here, but suffice it to say, it's very interesting why, for example, he leaves out James Garfield (who was president for only 6 months), and Warren Harding, yet includes Calvin Coolidge (who served a term and a half) and Jimmy Carter, who is not only one of our most recent presidents, but is still alive.

But...there was a problem.

The book has lots of errors about basic presidential facts. In the acknowledgments section, Gerhardt thanks his editor "for support above and beyond the call of duty" and for providing "quiet confidence." Perhaps that confidence was a bit too quiet; had the editor truly have gone "above and beyond," he would have caught the mistakes that I found without even trying.

Here are some errors I found:

PAGE 3: Right on the first page of the text, in the second paragraph, Gerhardt says "Martin Van Buren has been eclipsed by the six men who preceeded him as president," and the next sentence calls Van Buren "the seventh president." Nope. Van Buren was number eight.

PAGE 34: Here, Gerhardt says that, besides Jefferson, there were "eight other presidents who preceded" William Harrison. Nope. Besides Jefferson, there were seven other presidents prior to Harrison.

PAGE 38: Gerhardt claims there were "five nineteenth-century vice presidents who became president because of the incumbent's death." Wrong. There were only four: John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Andrew Johnson, and Chester Arthur. They became presidents upon the deaths of William Harrison, Zachary Taylor, Abraham Lincoln, and James Garfield in 1841, 1850, 1865, and 1881, respectively.

PAGE 104: In the first paragraph on this page, Gerhardt claims that President Pierce took cabinet member Jefferson Davis on a trip to New York in 1843. The only problem is...there was no President Pierce in 1843. John Tyler was president that year. Pierce wasn't president at any time in the 1840s, in fact.

PAGE 127: In paragraph two, Gerhardt states that Grover Cleveland is "among the ten presidents who served for more than a term." Um...let's just count right now: Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Jackson, Lincoln, Grant, Cleveland, McKinley, Teddy Roosevelt, Wilson, Coolidge, Franklin Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Johnson, Nixon, Reagan, Clinton, Bush-43, Obama. Yeah...that's more than ten. And if we want to get really picky, Cleveland is not one of the presidents who served more than one term - he was a president twice (#22 and 24), and each time it was just a term. So it would be better to say he is among the men, or persons, who served more than a term.

PAGE 141: It stands to reason that if you're wrong about how many men served as presdient for longer than a term, you're also gonna be wrong about how many served for a term or less. The funny thing is, though, that since 43 men served as president, you would think that Gerhardt would here claim that 33 served for a term or less (since he said 10 served for more than a term, and 43-10=33). But no. In the first paragraph on this page, he says Benjamin Harrison "was one of fifteen men who served for one term or less." Again, let's count: John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Van Buren, William Harrison, Tyler, Polk, Taylor, Fillmore, Pierce, Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, Hayes, Garfield, Arthur, Benjamin Harrison, Taft, Harding, Hoover, Kennedy, Ford, Carter, Bush-41. Yeah...that's more than 15.

PAGE 155: In the second sentence on this page, Gerhardt claims that, besides Cleveland, "sixteen other presidents" have served more than a single term. See my comments, above, for page 127. Again, he's wrong. There haven't been 17, and there haven't been ten. There's been 21.

PAGE 167: This one confused me. Here's the sentence in question: "Hill and Cleveland had long been political foes: Hill had led the anti-Cleveland factions within New York, and as governor of New York, he had made sure that Cleveland lost New York in his 1884 reelection bid."

...So, I'm not sure what's going here. Who is governor of New York? Hill or Cleveland? It's not clear. Both men served as governor; Cleveland was governor in 1884. Was Cleveland running for reelection as governor in 1884? I don't know. But I do know that he was running for president that year. But he was only running for election - not reelection. And he carried New York in the electoral college, so Hill certainly hadn't "made sure" Cleveland "lost New York."

PAGE 171: So here's a mistake I wasn't aware of immediately, but only upon checking the endnotes (which, frustratingly, begin renumbering for each chapter). In paragraph two, it states that William Taft was "one of only six presidents handpicked by their predecessors." Huh. That's interesting. I wonder who those six were? So, I checked the endnote, where it reads: "The other four presidents are Madison, Monroe, Van Buren, and George H. W. Bush." Again, the editor is asleep at the wheel here.

PAGE 191: Paragraph three claims that "Coolidge served longer" than the other six Republican presidents from McKinley through Hoover. No, he did not. Coolidge served as president from 1923-1929, for just over 5 and a half years. Teddy Roosevelt, meanwhile, served for 7 and a half years - considerably longer than Coolidge. And, yes, Roosevelt was a Republican president between McKinley and Hoover.

PAGE 214: Here, the book cites a speech President Coolidge delivered in August 1924, and says "for a lame duck, the shift in his tone and position were striking." See my comment above - Coolidge was not a lame duck president at the time of this speech; he was not a lame duck until more than four years later, beginning in late 1928 (after Hoover won the election).

...And that's all I caught.

As a note to Gerhardt, if you're reading this: I greatly enjoyed your book and I thank you for writing it. Please be sure to get a better editor next time, though. I hereby offer to spot-check your next book on the Presidents, free of charge, if you'd like. Let me know.

So you couldn't find that 800 page biography of Franklin Pierce that you were looking for ?

If so then this is the book for you.

All kidding aside this covers history's 13 most ignored presidents. It shows how most of them actually did something meaningful and gives the reader some basic trivia and facts that they may not have been aware of.

This is interesting reading. The author sets a good pace and makes some of the presidents who we may have known in name only come alive. Just enough here on each one to stay interesting, give you the facts and move on.

I would have liked to see more background on some of the history going on at the times these presidents were serving as usually less studied presidents serve during less studied historical eras.

Overall interesting and good background for those of us who will never get as in depth on Millard Fillmore as we would like.

This book is a must-read for anyone who is a student of American history and American Presidents. Unlike many other historical authors, Gerhardt explains the importance of historical figures, party politics and events in the context of the entire arc of American history. These explanations gave me a sense of the enduring importance of these figures and parties (like the Whigs) in a way I had not appreciated before reading it.

Great Information for Growing Herbs

The propagation and growing instructions are clear and quite useful for the beginner. The author expands on those to growing in quantity for sale to restaurants or to sell potted plants.

One chapter gives ideas (bath perfumes, herb sachets, etc.) for herbal products to market, but readers will need other books to detail making these or else develop their own recipes from trial and error. A final chapter gives Points-To-Remember for building a successful herb business.

Good info on planting, propagating, harvesting herbs

This book contains a lot of good basic information on growing herbs. The sections on propagation and harvesting are especially helpful. The author starts with a list of 32 herbs that she recommends for a basic herb garden, and a second list of 32 more herbs. She does give some basic information for each herb, such as the kind of soil it likes, how tall the plant will be, and so forth. Information like that is necessary for planning a garden. However, although she does group the herbs into categories (e.g. herbs for a butterfly garden, kitchen herbs, herbs for repelling insects, etc), she does not offer any actual sample garden plans. This would be extremely helpful for a beginner, who might be daunted by the prospect of checking which types of herbs like a particular soil type, whether they prefer sun or shade, how much space each one needs, how tall they will be, what colors would look well together, etc. Sample garden plans give the reader confidence and a sense of how it all "comes together."

The author also does not give any explanation for why she chose the first and second groups of 32 herbs. Very minimal information as to their usage is given in each herb's listing (for example, some herbs are described simply as "for flavor in the kitchen" or "for medicinal uses"), making it difficult for a beginner to determine just how essential a given herb is. Depending on whether your interest in herbs is culinary, medicinal, for dyeing, or for other purposes, you might need to consult other sources to decide just what to plant for your needs.

To reiterate, except for a lack of sample garden plans, the information on growing, propagating, and harvesting herbs is outstanding. There are helpful sections on growing herbs for profit and examples of herbal products to sell as well. For usages, as well as for color illustrations, you will need an additional reference.

The Good Parts Are Good!

On the whole, this was a pleasant read. I'll try to give a sense of where the highlights are and aren't, since the book could have used some more rigorous editing to make it more uniformly good.

The bits on the early history of trigonometry were fascinating. I particularly appreciated the clear and complete explanations of problems from the Egyptian Rhind papyrus and from cuneiform sources.

Not all of the later historical developments are equally worth our time. The sidebars on Viète, Lissajous, and Landau were particularly good, but the ones on Agnesi and De Moivre didn't add much. (This is unfortunate in the case of De Moivre, but I think a sidebar just can't do justice to so great a mathematician--the fun and beauty is lost when you try to squeeze the highlights together.) I agree with Maor that the big names should not be allowed to slide into oblivion, but in a book like this the subject matter should always pass the stricter test of what intrinsic "delights" it offers.

In this genre, the digressive nature of a "journey of discovery" is part of the appeal. But sometimes the thread connecting the episodes was hard to discern here. Chs. 7-8, 10-12 are tedious and feel like padding compared to the well-sustained interest throughout most of the book.

On the other hand, Ch. 14 ("Imaginary Trigonometry") is a masterpiece. With only a basic knowledge of how complex numbers work, readers can appreciate three beautiful examples of conformal mapping (w=sin z, w=e^z, z=w^2). These mappings are chosen and illustrated to your imagination much better than any of the visual exhibits in a standard applied math textbook like Greenberg's "Advanced Engineering Mathematics."

It's in the nature of such a book that sometimes the key problems presented are solved with the help of something that Maor thinks is too advanced or tedious to present to his audience. The result can be that the story of historical progress is obscured by these "rabbit out of a hat" moments. At least, I found that I had to stop and look up the missing pieces, in order to make some of the developments as impressive as they were supposed to be. (I also had to look up some "well-known theorems" in Euclid, read up on the background to Stirling's factorial approximation, etc.)

Excellent, something for everyone, both students and average person

First, this is not an instructional text and falls into the category of popular math books for the masses.

This is another, history of math with some math in it and some neat applications. So if you are not a math type, the historical and presentation of the applications makes it a worthwhile read.
If you are a math type, this book still has enough history and some applications that you probably have not read in your trig book. Yes, a good number of the applications are presented in every trig textbook. The author's presentation is alot more exciting than the average trig text, and there are enough of interesting applications which will make it worthwhile.

With the rise of popular math books there are a large number which mix the history and the theorems. But few authors are good at it, and the ones who can do it, are great at it. Maor does an excellent job.

His goal is to make trig engaging. Which is a good thing. considering trig is not even a required course in a good number of high school's cirriculum. When I was in high school you really could not take Calculus without it. Now you can get to college without ever taking trig.

So for a student , it offers a nice incentive to learn trig. Also the historical presentation is always a great resource for understanding math. Textbooks throw this stuff in as sidebars, but they never put it in its historical context. So this genre of book is worthwhile to the student.

For me, trig really became fun when I took a drafting course, and had to apply it. And it was fun. Hopefully this book will make it fun for a student to really learn trig.

An ideal book for high school mathematics teachers

Trigonometry is the study of relations between angles and lengths. Indeed SOH CAH TOA and trigonometric identities are part of the subject, but there is much more to the subject than what you may have learned in high school. If you have trouble remembering whether sin(0)=0 or cos(0)=0, you can fix this either by using your calculator to find that sin(0)=0, or you can memorize sin(0)=0 (which at least stores something in your brain, and if the memorization is done severely enough it will indeed last your life), or finally by having such a comprehensive understanding of trigonometry that mixing up sin(0)=0 and cos(0)=0 would be like forgetting whether sugar or salt tastes sweet.

Learning the history of a subject along with learning the content of the subject itself helps you remember material and makes the material feel alive. It also helps with pacing the rate at which you absorb careful mathematical proofs. After reading even a page or two of a serious proof you need time to let the material settle before going on to the next proof. Many in the discipline of mathematics today think of theorems and proofs as real mathematics and anything else as motivation that one should learn to do without. This is wrong; things are true whether or not someone has written them down and things will wait for us to find them out. Anything that helps people absorb mathematics into their brains is real mathematics. (Thus using a calculator to calculate values of trigonometric functions is a skill but not a mathematical skill as it doesn't involve putting mathematics in your brain, any more than idly chatting while playing a video game is practice in public speaking.) Of course talking about the provenance of the Rhind Papyrus has no mathematical content. But it is fun to read about, and it gives you hooks in your mind to remember things about the papyrus. Likewise, learning the etymology of mathematical terms such as sine and degree gives us more ways to summon mathematics from our memory.

This is not a serious work of history like the works of T. L. Heath, D. T. Whiteside, D. H. Fowler, W. K. Bühler, J. E. Hofmann, André Weil, Lucio Russo or Clifford Truesdell, and a careful writer should not use this as a reference. But it is a fun book that shows the reader many different theorems in trigonometry they may not have seen before, and gives the reader an outline of the history of the subject that can be filled in by reading more detailed books.

If you just skim this book, I encourage you to at least read the chapter on Regiomantanus, which presents a problem posed by him: "At what point on the ground does a perpendicularly suspended rod appear largest?" Aside from being a question that doesn't seem contrived, it can involve the arithmetic mean-geometric mean inequality and calculus.
