Fascinating ...

It was an unplanned discussion that would unexpectedly last through the night only to conclude at the break of day. The previous evening a small group of men and women gathered at a palace nestled in the heart of central Italy. The palace, facing Mount Cataria, in Arbon, would set the scene for one of the most important fictional discussions concerning Italian Renaissance court life during the sixteenth century.

Duke Federico Guidobaldo, owner of the palace, was known to retire early, but that didn't mean the fun and games of the evening were to be cancelled. On the contrary they went into full swing that very night when Duchess Elisabetta Gonzaga and signora Emilia Pia took upon themselves to begin the festivities with the command that the game of the evening would be that "one of us should be chosen and given the task of depicting in words a perfect courtier, explaining the character and the particular qualities needed by anyone who deserves such a title." A courtier throughout the ages has been known as one who attends to a powerful person such as a king or head of state and in turn receives special privilege. And so Baldesar Castiglione's Book of the Courtier (HOW TO ACHIEVE TRUE GREATNESS) begins. This slim volume, divided into two sections, The First and Second Book of the Courtier, flows easily from one section to the next.

Count Lodovico da Canossa promptly took the lead with several other gentlemen joining in, alternating, adding and sometimes lending direction to the debate. Signors Gaspare Pallavicino, Bernardo Bibbiena, Cesare Gonzaga, Ottaviano, Pietro Bembo, Morello da Ortona, Magnifico Giuliano ... all opinionated men to the letter carried on through the night with the Count. The Count claimed that "he [the ideal courtier] should put ever effort and diligence into surpassing the rest just a little in everything, to that he may always be recognized as superior." Numerous attributes and virtues attributed to their ideal courtier ranged from those physical attributes of being "well built, finely proportioned members" to possessing a fine mind and being a "more than average scholar." Their courtier should be a perfect man in every way. It would be a rare man who could fit their bill.

I didn't find Baldassar's (Baldassare in Italian) work to be a difficult or weighty read, but rather one of numerous thoughts and debate to be considered as a whole. The cast of characters, was a bit difficult to follow at times, but taking notes proved to be quite helpful. This work philosophically meshes with the work of Aristotle and his conjecture of the "perfect man," whom the courtier, I suspect, may have been modeled after. This book isn't one which the average reader would pick up and read on a lark, but rather one that might be considered by all who aspire to leadership positions, anyone with an interest in sixteenth century Italy, and those who enjoy philosophical debate.

Great classic in an even better physical form.

This book is a classic in terms of philosophy and one that is certainly motivating. If only we could all apply the advice contained within it to our lives. This Penguin Great Books series edition makes it even better by presenting it in a artistic, compact form. The text is clear and well-edited and truly a great addition to one's personal library.

Get the entire book, not just this extract

This book is just the first third of a much longer work. The entire work, The Book of the Courtier, is well worth reading for the insights into Renaissance Itay's court life, and well as some thoughtful (though cynical) discussions of behavior in the halls of power.
It's good, but getting the complete work rather than this excessively truncated version is the way to go.

Sein wissenschaftliches Gesamtwerk beschäftigt sich mit einer Vielfalt von Themen aus den Bereichen der Ethnologie, Soziologie, aber auch Philosophie und Politik, wodurch seine Arbeiten über die Soziologie hinaus auch in anderen Fachwissenschaften wie z. B. Geschichte, Erziehungs- oder Literaturwissenschaft oder aber auch bei einer breiten, an soziopolitischen Fragen interessierten Öffentlichkeit Beachtung fanden.
BOURDIEUs Gesamtwerk beinhaltet nicht eine „große Theorie“, sondern besteht aus verschiedenen Teilkomponenten wie der Theorie der Praxis, der Habitustheorie oder der Kapitaltheorie. (vgl. SCHWINGEL 2003)

Neben den Vorstellungen vom sozialen Raum, vom sozialen Feld oder dem kulturellen Kapital gehört das Habitus-Konzept zu den „zentralen Erkenntnisinstrumenten“, die BOURDIEU den Sozialwissenschaften hinterlassen hat. (vgl. KRAIS / GEBAUER 2002)
In meiner Arbeit werde ich die Habitus-Theorie von P. BOURDIEU vorstellen und ihre Bedeutung für die Erwachsenenbildung erläutern.
Ich beginne meine Arbeit mit grundlegenden Überlegungen zur Erwachsenenbildung. Am Anfang steht eine kurze Erläuterung der Probleme bei der Erarbeitung einer Theorie der Erwachsenenbildung aufgrund ihres besonderen, sehr vielfältigen Gegenstandsbereichs, wie es DEWE (1988) aufzeigt. Es folgt dann eine Darstellung der Schwierigkeiten bei der Differenzierung theoretischer Zugangsmöglichkeiten zur Erwachsenenbildung sowie eine kurze Vorstellung von DEWEs Unterscheidung verschiedener Sichtweisen der Erwachsenenbildung.

Anschließend komme ich zum Hauptthema meiner Arbeit, der strukturalistischen Bildungstheorie nach P. BOURDIEU, deren zentraler Punkt das Habitus-Konzept ist. Ich werde BOURDIEUs Weg zur Erarbeitung des Habituskonzepts aufzeigen und dann die Habitus-Theorie in ihren Kernpunkten vorstellen.
Im darauf folgenden Kapitel werde ich auf den Zusammenhang von Habitus und Feld eingehen sowie die Entstehung des Habitus einer Person im Laufe ihrer Sozialisation und den Bezug zu ihrem individuellen Lebenszusammenhang beschreiben.
Zum Abschluss meiner Arbeit zeige ich letztendlich die Bedeutung von BOURDIEUs Habitustheorie für eine sozialisations- und bildungstheoretische Sichtweise der Erwachsenenbildung auf.

Sie versucht, den Bibeltext geschichtlich nachzuvollziehen und greift dazu auf kritische Prinzipien und Methoden zurück. Auf diese Weise soll im Folgenden nun auch die biblische Textstelle Gen 25,19-34 historisch-kritisch ausgelegt werden.
Die Auswahl der Bibelstelle erfolgte aufgrund meines Interesses an den geschilderten Familienverhältnissen. Mir erscheinen die Beziehungen der Familienmitglieder zueinander ungewöhnlich und seltsam. Aus welchem Grund liebt der Vater lediglich den erstgeborenen Sohn, die Mutter hingegen aber nur den jüngeren? Und weshalb verlangt Jakob etwas für sein Linsengericht? Bedeutet ihm die Nächstenliebe gar nichts? Herrscht denn seit ihres Kampfes um die Erstgeburt, der schon im Mutterleib begann, ein ewiges Gegeneinander statt eines freundschaftlichen Verhältnisses unter Brüdern?
Beim Lesen des Textes werfen sich mir noch weitere Fragen auf: Wie ist es möglich, dass eine Frau, die ihr ganzes Leben lang unfruchtbar war, nach dem Gebet ihres Mannes zu Gott schließlich doch schwanger wird? Und weshalb wird es Rebekka trotz ihres hohen Alters und ihrer jahrelangen Unfruchtbarkeit doch gewährt Kinder zu bekommen, während anderen unfruchtbaren Frauen dieser Wunsch untersagt bleibt? Sind dem Herrn andere Menschen weniger wichtig als Isaak und dessen Nachkommen? Sollten Gott nicht alle Menschen gleich wichtig sein? Sie sind doch alle seine Geschöpfe!
Außerdem ist mir unerklärlich, weshalb Rebekka sich im folgenden Vers darüber beschwert, schwanger geworden zu sein. Sie weiß zu diesem Zeitpunkt zwar noch nichts von der Entwicklung zweier Kinder; jedoch erscheint es mir sehr undankbar, sich über eine Schwangerschaft zu beklagen, die ohne die Gnade Gottes gar nicht zustande gekommen wäre. In diesem Zusammenhang frage ich mich auch, ob man anhand dieser Bibelstelle nun davon ausgehen soll, dass das Leben eines jeden Menschen vorbestimmt ist. Denn Gott gibt Rebekka ja bereits vor der Geburt der Zwillinge zu verstehen, dass der Jüngere dem Älteren überlegen sein wird.
Unbegreiflich ist mir auch der Vergleich eines Neugeborenen mit einem rauen Fell und die Möglichkeit, sich bei der Geburt an der Ferse seines Zwillings festzuhalten.

About the Author
Alan Montgomery is the Assistant Director of the Oberlin Opera Theater, and has been a member of the vocal faculty of the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music since 1980. He has served as an Opera Coach at the Hamburg (Germany) State Theater, the Whitewater Opera, and other companies, as well as at vocal institutes at the University of Indianapolis and other U.S. colleges. He has authored two operettas and translated many opera texts for performance.

A Delightful, Easy to Read and Well-Limned Treasure

I highly recommend this book to anyone who works with professional opera singers on a regular basis. I have a degree in accompanying and have been working in the opera/musical theater world for over 12 years but still this little book covered essential information that I have not encountered anywhere else. It is also a great assurance to the coach who may feel overwhelmed by this unwieldy profession. Immediately after reading this book, I found my coaching techniques to be refined and I was more confident about exactly what I should (and should not) be saying to singers in my coachings with them. I'm also in the position of hiring pianists for staging rehearsals and I wish that all aspiring "repetiteurs" would read this book as well. It thouroughly examines what is expected of the pianist in this unique and sometimes frustrating role. Kudos to Mr. Montgomery for taking some of the mystery out of this mysterious career path. The book is heavier on considerations than on techniques, so perhaps some day a follow-up book could be written (that of course would be a much larger tome) with more specific ideas on how to guide singers to their goals. In the mean time, no book I know will serve the coach/accompanist better in dealing with the challanges of this wonky gig. Mr. Montgomery deserves praise for turning many a gladdening and humorous phrase in a book that could have otherwise been drier than Grout!

Not really a review.

I can't write a review of this since I wrote the book itself. But I'll also mention, adding to the above description, that there is much food for thought for singers, conductors, directors, and chorus masters. "Techniques" may refer to ways an opera coach rehearses, but "Considerations" delves into the stylistic aspects of each composer or composition group and what makes one group different from another. There is a rather complete list of vocal Fachs at the end, including many roles omitted in similar lists elsewhere. A "Preferred Edition" section is also part of the Appendix.

As to the number of stars - you think I'm going to give it less than that?

First of its kind, and hopefully not the last

This is one of the only books available on this subject, and covers it quite well. Many coaches will have learned most of these techniques and ideas from the real world, but it is an excellent resource for those entering the field. It is also an excellent resource for singers, who can learn how to get more out of their coachings by reading what Montgomery has to offer. Hopefully this book is the start of more resources of this sort, providing a link between what has been a largely aural and oral tradition of performance and coaching.

About the Author
Peter Hawkes graduated from the University of Cambridge and subsequently obtained his PhD in the Electron Microscopy Section of the Cavendish Laboratory. He remained there for several years, working on electron optics and digital image processing before taking up a research position in the CNRS Laboratory of Electron Optics (now CEMES-CNRS) in Toulouse, of which he was Director in 1987. During the Cambridge years, he was a Research Fellow of Peterhouse and a Senior Research fellow of Churchill College. He has published extensively, both books and scientific journal articles, and is a member of the editorial boards of Ultramicroscopy and the Journal of Microscopy. He was the founder-president of the European Microscopy Society, CNRS Silver Medallist in 1983 and is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America and of the Microscopy Society of America (Distinguished Scientist, Physics, 2015), Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society and Honorary Member of the French Microscopy Society. In 1982, he was awarded the ScD degree by the University of Cambridge.
In 1982, he took over editorship of the Advances in Electronics & Electron Physics (now Advances in Imaging & Electron Physics) from Claire Marton (widow of the first editor, Bill Marton) and followed Marton's example in maintaining a wide range of subject matter. He added mathematical morphology to the topics regularly covered; Jean Serra and Gerhard Ritter are among those who have contributed.
In 1980, he joined Professor Wollnik (Giessen University) and Karl Brown (SLAC) in organising the first international conference on charged-particle optics, designed to bring together opticians from the worlds of electron optics, accelerator optics and spectrometer optics. This was so successful that similar meetings have been held at four-year intervals from 1986 to the present day. Peter Hawkes organised the 1990 meeting in Toulouse and has been a member of the organising committee of all the meetings. He has also participated in the organization of other microscopy-related congresses, notably EMAG in the UK and some of the European and International congresses on (electron) microscopy.
He is very interested in the history of optics and microscopy, and recently wrote long historical articles on the correction of electron lens aberrations, the first based on a lecture delivered at a meeting of the Royal Society. He likewise sponsored biographical articles for the Advances on such major figures as Ernst Ruska (Nobel Prize 1986), Helmut Ruska, Bodo von Borries, Jan Le Poole and Dennis Gabor (Nobel Prize, 1971). Two substantial volumes of the series were devoted to 'The Beginnings of Electron Microscopy' and 'The Growth of Electron Microscopy'. and others have covered 'Cold Field Emission Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy' and 'Aberration-corrected Electron Microscopy', with contributions by all the main personalities of the subject.

This book is a must-have for anyone working in the field of electron emission from surfaces. This is by far the most comprehensive treatment of the the subject of thermal, field and photo emission that I have found.
