A very good book.

This of book has lots of information. But it is a special type of book. Rather than focusing exclusively on military and political events in the Medieval struggle between Christians and various opponents, this book presents well-researched descriptions of weapons (and their manufacture), armor, artillery, transport, fortifications, etc. A good book.

Military History as confused and confusing pot-pourri

This book keeps on promising, but never delivers. In less than 200 pages, David Nicolle aims to take his readers on a grand tour of 500 years of medieval warfare, mainly between Muslims and Christians, but also covering the other conflicts of both those Faiths. His focus is on the the various armies, their organization and equipment, tactics, arms and fortifications, rather than on campaigns or battles.
Even so, he attempts to cover far too much in too little space. The book is confusingly organized and miserably edited (if it was edited at all). Enticing snippets of information, many of them off-topic in relation to their placement, are scattered randomly; but there is hardly ever anything more substantial than that initially tantalizing bouquet.
I have the feeling that this respected Historian cobbled this book together from his other, better focused works.

This version of Little Women is augmented with text and illustrations that explain some of the period social customs, clothes, entertainments, etc. Also included are some bits of information about Louisa May Alcott's life. This approach seems best suited to children already familiar with the story; they may find the historical perspective interesting. First-time readers will most likely be distracted by the margin notes that pull attention from the narrative. While they can be helpful, as when they illustrate an unfamiliar piece of clothing, they are often distracting and can even be confusing in their placement. For instance, a note mentioning the Laurences is placed two pages before those characters are introduced. This format may also discourage readers from independent research?a process that can be rewarding in its own right. One other caveat?as explained in an endnote, Little Women was originally written in two parts, and this volume only contains part one, which ends with Mr. March's return. How would one describe this latest recording of the classic story from Alcott (Little Men, Audio Reviews, LJ 11/15/96)? The answer must be, clear, competent, and unexciting. Laura Grafton is a precise reader, but her voice lacks expressiveness, and she makes little attempt to vocally differentiate (and/or animate) the characters. The result is an inoffensive and slightly dull rendering. There's nothing wrong; the tapes just won't grab the attention of the casual listener. The producer has made a praiseworthy attempt to reduce costs by having each cassette side carry double text. At $22.95, this tape set is an excellent value. Unfortunately, this double-track format requires a stereo cassette player with a fully functioning balance control. Most portable cassette players and some car stereo systems do not have this feature. Since, at least anecdotally, a large percentage of recreational audiocassette library borrowers are commuters or exercisers, one should consider whether this format would be used by patrons. Libraries purchasing this format might also consider purchasing (and lending) the associated headphone adaptor plugs. "Little Women," - The Original

Like the previous reviewer, I was surprised to find that he book I had been occasionally rereading for over 50 years was NOT the original novel. My own copy, much loved and well thumbed, has been with me since I was a ten year old. I bought the Kindle version just to have it in my portable library, since I thought I knew it almost by heart. To my surprise, when I started looking it over, I found that the book was not the same at all. My original copy must have been "modernized" at some point. All of the familiar passages were there, but there was a great deal that I didn't remember reading before. Some of that was a specifically Victorian kind of moralizing, but there was also some expansion of the story.. I'm not sure that I would have appreciated it all when I was younger, but I found it a delight to read now, as an example of a book of its times. Now I'm going to download the rest of the Alcott catalogue and see how it compares to the books I thought were the originals when I read them many years ago. This was still an exemplary book. It will always be one of the classics.

Whole Story edition is only half a story - I'm shocked!

I was so, so looking forward to reading "Little Women" to my daughter, so she could be caught up in it as I was at an early age. I particularly chose the "Whole Story" edition because of its broad margins, easy-to-scan pages, and charming illustrations and margin notes that add historical texture to the story.

Imagine my shock to discover that at the end of THIS edition, Jo has not written a book, Amy has not gone off to Europe, Professor Baer has not made an appearance of any kind and....you'll never believe this....Beth is still carrying on a conversation (I'm trying not to spoil the plot of the real thing here).

That's because, apparently, "Little Women" was initially published in two parts ("Little Women" and "Good Wives"), which are generally published as the same book. Whole Story has chosen to stop at the half-way point, so much of the story you remember, loved, cried, and laughed over is just not here.

Imagine getting only the first half of Tom Sawyer...leave him stranded on the island forever!

I feel completely conned. It's a five-star story - make that maybe even a seven-star story - but it's a one-star edition.

An American classic.

I am a 14-year-old girl and just got around to reading Little Women about a year ago. It is a great American classic written by Louisa May Alcott. It is about the four March sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. They live in New England during the Civil War. They are poor, but they try to make the best of it as they grow and learn. We follow them through good times and bad as they, with help from Marmee and Laurie (their next-door neighbor), bear their own unique burdens. Meg's is poverty, Jo's is her temper, Beth's burden is not being able to play on a piano, and Amy's is her unaristocratic nose. (as funny as that sounds) You'll fall in love with Jo's oddities just as much as with Beth's gentil manners. It is a great book that everyone should read!

About the Author
Charles Darwin, a Victorian scientist and naturalist, has become one of the most famous figures of science to date. Born in 1809 to an upper-middle-class medical family, he was destined for a career in either medicine or the Anglican Church. However, he never completed his medical education and his future changed entirely in 1831 when he joined HMS Beagle as a self-financing, independent naturalist. On returning to England in 1836 he began to write up his theories and observations which culminated in a series of books, most famously On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection in 1859, where he challenged and contradicted contemporary biological and religious beliefs with two decades worth of scientific investigation and theory. Darwin's theory of natural selection is now the most widely accepted scientific model of how species evolve. He died in 1882 and was buried in Westminster Abbey. Damien Hirst is an internationally renowned English artist, who has dominated the art scene in England since the 1990s. Known in particular for his series of works on death, Hirst here provides a contemporary, visual take on Darwin's theory of evolution - the struggle between life and death in nature. William Bynum is Professor Emeritus of the History of Medicine at University College, London, and was for many years Head of the Academic Unit of the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine. He edited the scholarly journal Medical History from 1980 to 2001, and his previous publications include Science and the Practice of Medicine in the Nineteenth Century; The Companion Encyclopedia of the History of Medicine (co-edited with Roy Porter); The Oxford Dictionary of Scientific Quotations (with Roy Porter), The Dictionary of Medical Biography (with Helen Bynum), and History of Medicine: A Very Short Introduction. Struggle for Existence

Nothing is easier than to admit in words the truth of the universal struggle for life, or more difficult - at least I have found it so - than constantly to bear this conclusion in mind. Yet unless it be thoroughly engrained in the mind, I am convinced that the whole economy of nature, with every fact on distribution, rarity, abundance, extinction, and variation, will be dimly seen or quite misunderstood. We behold the face of nature bright with gladness, we often see superabundance of food; we do not see, or we forget, that the birds which are idly singing round us mostly live on insects or seeds, and are thus constantly destroying life; or we forget how largely these songsters, or their eggs, or their nestlings, are destroyed by birds and beasts of prey; we do not always bear in mind, that though food may be now superabundant, it is not so at all seasons of each recurring year.

I should premise that I use the term Struggle for Existence in a large and metaphorical sense, including dependence of one being on another, and including (which is more important) not only the life of the individual, but success in leaving progeny. Two canine animals in a time of dearth, may be truly said to struggle with each other which shall get food and live.

Concise introduction to the heart of Darwin's theory

Many folks erroneously suppose Darwin invented the idea of Evolution, the descent with modification of modern organisms from previously existing forms. In fact, this idea was well established in scientific circles by the early 19th century. What was lacking was a natural, in place of a supernatural, explanation for the process.

Darwin provided this at length in the 14 chapters of his 1859 work, "On the Origin of Species," the heart of which is his theory of Natural Selection. If organisms within species vary (and we know they do), and if that variation tends to be inherited between generations (which Darwin saw but could not explain), and if that variation gives some organisms within species an advantage over others in survival and reproduction, then it follows that species will become modified over time in consequence of favorable variation being preserved and passed on. That's all.

Penguin has provided a very convenient extract of four key chapters, the third dealing with the "struggle for existence," the fourth putting forth in more detail the argument outlined here, the sixth dealing with the more obvious objections to the theory (then as now), and the last chapter summing up the work. Even non-biologist readers nowadays will accept the evidence of variation, and are far more familiar than Darwin with modern genetics to explain inheritance. It remains necessary to understand intraspecific struggle and competition (which are often metaphorical), and to drawn the conclusion of descent with modification, as Darwin does.

This is *the* Darwin book for the lay reader, who wishes to see what all the fuss is about. I have used this little book as recommended reading for philosophy courses on Darwinian theory, and for a public lecture to be given in honour of the publication of the "Origin" this coming November 19th. It is an extremely accessible introduction to Natural Selection in Darwin's own words, without the necessity of plowing through a great deal of Victorian persiflage.

Evolutionary classic

Written in 1859 by Charles Darwin to state his belief in natural selection, this book does not disappoint. Darwin clearly states his theory in this book of how nature naturally selects the strongest of a species to continue on the race. He explains the instruments of selection, sexual selecting through choice of mate, environmental and climate selection through ability to survive. He explains through charts of branches how a species could evolve and change over long time periods into a separate species. He does not back down from his critics on how an eye could evolve or why species appear to be created for their environment. I found this book to seem like a more modern read than its pre-American Civil War publishing date would suggest. After reading this little book I have a much better understanding of Darwin's theory of evolution and see how he began to turn modern science on its head by his creative and amazing theory which modern science now accepts as fact.

A founding work of modern thought

This proves, as if it needed proving, that the originators of profound ideas often given the clearest, most readable, and most complete discussions of their topics. Explainers often just muddy the issue, and most later researchers incrementally widen, fill in, and bolster the original points. If any intelligent reader wants to understand the mechanism, breadth, subtlety, and power of evolution, this is the place to start. If nothing else, Darwin gives clear statement (and rebuttal) to issues that biblical literalists still yammer about, including the time scale of speciation, the fragmentary nature of the fossil record, and the fallacy of 'irreducible complexity.'

"Slow though the process may be, ... I can see no limit ... to the beauty and infinite complexity of the coadaptations between all organic beings" Understanding doesn't dampen awe. Quite the opposite: truly appreciating the power of change and selection conveys a majestic sense of the world and our place in it that I can not express. And, although I'm not a theist, I can certainly see how the the limitless power of never-ending creation can be seen as a direct and present act of a limitless Creator.

Only a very few things will sound unfamiliar to the modern reader. The first is the absence of genetics, from Mendel to Watson and Crick. Darwin observed and described inheritance without any sharp statement of what was inherited - genetics provides the mortar between the stones of Darwin's edifice. Another is the creationist beliefs of his time: that each "species" was a distinct act of creation, and progenitor of the many extant subspecies and varieties. Yet another is his unwillingness to believe that "any part of the structure of any one species had been formed for the exclusive good of another species." Mutualistic coevolution is real: a flower's nectar is of no direct use to the flower, but serves the insects around it. In a wider sense, though, nectar indirectly benefits the flower by attracting pollinators, so the error may lie only in too tight an interpretation of "exclusive good."

This slim book has been edited down from a much longer work, and I do not know what was sacrificed to brevity. Still, it stands well by itself, and the short distance from front cover to back should appeal to people put off by thick books. I recommend this to every thinking reader, down to high school age or earlier.
