Instructive and Insightful Essays on Suffering

This collection of essays by Roman Catholic theologians explores the Christian response to suffering. The authors survey the Scriptures, the Christian life and reflect on contemporary approaches to suffering. The book addresses the overbearing reality of suffering in humanity. The authors determine that because of the incarnation of Jesus Christ suffering does not have the last word.
Satisfactory solutions to the problems of suffering and evil continue to elude theologians. Daniel Harrington, in his essay "Old Testament Approaches to Suffering," articulates the response that "no answer is totally satisfying to those in the midst of suffering." The authors echo the need to accept the presence of mystery concerning God's purpose for suffering in the world. Richard Miller writes in his article "The Divine Purpose and Human Suffering" that "one of the central tasks of the theologian is to preserve the understanding of God as mystery." This book reminds us that "we are not ultimately in control of our own existence" and we do not comprehend all of God's ways.
The authors encourage engagement with those who suffer. In "Suffering in Christian Life and Experience," Elizabeth Dreyer reminds readers that "the Christian life demands that we act to prevent, remove, and heal suffering."
The authors affirm that God has entered into suffering with us in Jesus Christ. Michael Hines writes, "The Christian Tradition does not simply affirm that Jesus suffers with us. It maintains that because he suffers with us everything is changed." While accepting the presence of severe suffering in the world, Hines emphasizes the presence of the overwhelming love of God.
