Der immer stärker werdende griechische Einfluss auf die römische Kultur sollte auch den Gang der Erziehung nicht unangetastet lassen. Schulen wurden gegründet und Lehrstühle für höhere Wissenschaften eingerichtet;, Philosophie, Literatur und Kunst traten an die Stelle des utilitaristisch ausgerichteten Unterrichts. Im Folgenden werde ich einen Überblick die Entwicklung, Gestalt und Inhalte der römischen Erziehung geben. Im Fokus meiner Untersuchungen wird die römische Elementarschule, derludus litterarius,von ihrer Entstehung bis zu ihrem Niedergang in der Spätantike stehen. Die Erziehung während der römischen Antike wurde wissenschaftlich bereits durchaus gut erforscht. Jedoch nimmt hier die Elementarschule im Vergleich mit der höheren Bildung einen sehr geringen Raum ein. Zudem ist die Quellenlage für die höheren Wissenschaften als wesentlich besser zu beurteilen. Bedenkt man das hohe Ansehen derartes liberalesin der zu behandelnden Epoche, verwundert dies nicht weiter. Für die Erziehung in frührepublikanischer Zeit können wir uns kaum auf Zeitzeugenberichte stützen. Als Hauptquelle ist hier die Plutarch-Biographie des Marcus Porcius Cato zu nennen. Es ist jedoch fraglich, wie bzw. ob das Erziehungskonzept des Cato auf die Gesellschaft übertragen werden kann. Spätere Texte, vor allem diejenigen der Kaiserzeit, malen ein idealisiertes Bild der von der “guten alten Zeit“.

"His name is Percy Bysshe Shelley, and he is the author of a poetical work entitled Alastor, or the Spirit of Solitude." With these words, the radical journalist and poet Leigh Hunt announced his discovery in 1816 of an extraordinary talent within "a new school of poetry rising of late."

The third volume of the acclaimed edition of The Complete Poetry of Percy Bysshe Shelley includes Alastor, one of Shelley’s first major works, and all the poems that Shelley completed, for either private circulation or publication, during the turbulent years from 1814 to March 1818: Hymn to Intellectual Beauty, Mont Blanc, Laon and Cythna, as well as shorter pieces, such as his most famous sonnet, Ozymandias. It was during these years that Shelley, already an accomplished and practiced poet with three volumes of published verse, authored two major volumes, earned international recognition, and became part of the circle that was later called the Younger Romantics.

As with previous volumes, extensive discussions of the poems’ composition, influences, publication, circulation, reception, and critical history accompany detailed records of textual variants for each work. Among the appendixes are Mary W. Shelley’s 1839 notes on the poems for these years, a table of the forty-two revisions made to Laon and Cythna for its reissue as The Revolt of Islam, and Shelley’s errata list for the same.

It is in the works included in this volume that the recognizable and characteristic voice of Shelley emerges—unmistakable, consistent, and vital.

Icey - HOT!!

I don't know why, but I seem to have a huge crush on Jack Frost. This version of him definitely encourages it. He sounds like he would give any woman the shivers. This story was a fantastic romance with just the right touch of fantasy. I appreciated that Kate had real problems and issues holding her back from her relationship with Jack. Not to mention it would be a little disconcerting to think you'd be surrounded by snow and ice all the time with only one other person for company. That would give any normal person cold feet. Pun intended. The Winter World sounds AMAZING. I loved the way the author described it and I wish there had been more. I wanted to know more about the winter fae. I guess when a book makes you want more, it's pretty good. This was a fast read with light sexual content and no bad language.

A quick read that's sure to warm you up on cold winter nights

I honestly can say I didn't know what to expect when picking up Frosted. Hmmm, a story about Jack Frost meeting a girl who falls through the ice and making her queen and then letting her go and finally chasing her down to convince her one last time. Sounds interesting, but can it work in a novella? The guy on the front was telling me it could and I honestly don't even go for blondes (my husband is dark headed and I've found my type is mostly dark-headed men). I mean look at him, doesn't he scream read this book :) So I did and I was delighted.

Yes I will be honest and say both characters, Kate and Jack frustrated me at times. But that was part of the story. They were both in love but both afraid to admit it or didn't know how to admit it. One was scarred by life, one hadn't really lived a life. I found them both to be interesting characters and once the novella really started moving and the story started really revealing itself I found myself understanding them and when I understod them, I liked them more and more and I fell in love with them and the story. Wendy does that, she makes you fall in love with the story which is magic itself.

I loved the use of the Jack Frost tale as the background with the winter kingdom and an immortal who controls the weather, even goes so far as controlling the weather for the woman he loves. It was a fascinating read with a different background even though as Wendy simply states it is at it's core a book of boy meets girl. However she does add layers to it that make it so much more.

Frosted becomes a very a very enjoyable read that I could hardly put down. I love the novella because it ensures a quick read, yet it's a complete read. It develops characters and develops a storyline without leaving you wanting too much more like a short story does. Frosted willl read quickly and you will want more but only because you will grow to love Kate and Jack. So grab you hot cocoa and a blanket and if it's cold enough, bundle up near a nice warm fire and enjoy Frosted. It may take away some of the chill of these waning winter days.

Jack Frost is Exactly What I Wanted Him To Be

First off I must confess Jack Frost is probably one of my favorite fae creatures/legends. This being, I was a little skeptical that Wendy was not going to be able to fulfill what I already pictured in my head of Jack Frost. She, however, got him as close to what I imagined it is actually a little frightening. He comes off cold and emotionless at first until you see past the years of being the King of Winter and realize the person underneath.

I found this book to be full of witty banter, just the right amount of romance and with that venerability that makes you feel for both the characters. It had everything in it that I was looking for. It was light hearted and heart felt at the same time.

Let me just conclude this by saying I did not put the book down. I made dinner with this book in my hand, I did not do anything else until I finished this book from start to finish. (And part of me is glad I finished it so I would not be caught reading it at work, because I would have!)

Barry Simon is IBM Professor of Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the California Institute of Technology.

Michael Reed is a Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Early Childhood, within the Institute of Education at the University of Worcester. He teaches on undergraduate and post-graduate courses and shares a coordinating role for a large Foundation Degree programme in early years which is taught in partner Colleges and at Children Centres within the community. He has been part of course development and writing teams at the Open University and an experienced author. He co-edited Reflective Practice in the Early Years (2010) and most recently 'Work Based Research in the Early Years' (2012) both published by Sage.

The essential spectrum of tools for physical observables.

Books on mathematical methods "for physicists" are often criticized by their superficiality, a sacrifice deemed necessary for achieving completeness. This one is a glaring exception: the first of a set of 4 (!) volumes dealing with the finest tools for dealing with the delicate mathematical questions in quantum theory - namely, functional analysis. Of course, this sounds rather vague, since quantum physics makes use of functional-analytic tools as diverse as distributions, Hilbert, Banach and locally convex spaces, spectral theory, semigroup theory, operator algebras, etc.

However, do not expect ready-brew formulae and cookbook recipes: this book gets his job done at least as well as Rudin, Yosida and Riesz-Sz.Nagy, just to mention the classics. Most theorems are rigorously proved, and although the book becomes more and more biased towards mathematical physics (i.e., methods for proving self-adjointness, analysis of spectra and scattering theory, as stated in the section "Three Mathematical Problems in Quantum Mechanics". These methods occupy most of the three remaining volumes) as it proceeds - this bias becomes the true reason of being for the last two volumes - this particular volume has precisely the most useful stuff: metric, Banach, topological, locally convex, and Hilbert spaces, bounded and unbounded operators. A supplement extracted from the second volume with the basics of Fourier transforms makes it self-contained as a monograph.

However, the best things, that make this book nearly unbeatable, are the several wisely chosen examples and counterexamples, the notes at the end of each chapter and the wonderful - and useful - exercises. Many working mathematicians I know use this book seriously in their research and their courses in Functional Analysis - a fact that cannot be underestimated and will hardly be equaled by any book on mathematical physics.

If you work on (axiomatic) quantum field theory you may also want to keep an eye on the second volume of the set, "Fourier Analysis, Self-adjointness", which is a bit more specialized but just as wonderful.

We used this book in Math 401 at Princeton. This book is great, well-written, well-problemed. It is curious that the other reviewer complains that there is nothing original in this book, because this subject is older than the author, who is an expert in Schrodinger operators. The parts of the next three volumes which I have read have also been great.

Amazing Content, Frustrating Form

This is an excellent text on functional analysis. I read a few books through the library when learning the subject and really loved the clarity of Reed-Simon the most. Also, the exercises are great.

However, the actual book that I received felt almost like photocopy quality and was difficult to read. The whole point of purchasing such an expensive text is to have it in your hands without the strain of staring at a computer screen. Elsevier did a downright crappy job with the new version (not the old maroon one).

Sibirien – ein Land der Extreme, aber kaum einer wird an die Wissenschaft in Sibirien denken, auch wenn diese – zumindest in der Zeit des Kalten Krieges – aber zum Teil auch heute noch eine extrem große Rolle in Sibirien einnimmt. In der Nähe von Novosibirsk liegt die Stadt Akademgorodok, die wichtigste Wissenschaftsstadt in Sibirien (verwaltungsmäßig ein Stadtteil von Nowosibirsk, im weiteren Verlauf zumeist als Stadt bezeichnet). Hier befindet sich die Staatliche Universität Novosibirsk, welche zu den drei wichtigsten Universitäten Russlands gerechnet wird. Auch wenn das „silicon valley“ in den letzten fünfzehn Jahren an Glanz verloren hat, ist es doch ein international geachteter Wissenschaftsstandort und eine wichtige Institution Sibiriens.

Er ist aber gleichzeitig in seiner Form und seinem Ergebnis Resultat einer komplexen Entwicklung der Haltung der deutschen Bevölkerung zur nationalsozialistischen Vergangenheit, und seine spezifischen Eigenheiten sind nur aus dieser heraus zu verstehen. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, den Prozess und seine unmittelbare Rezeption in der Öffentlichkeit vor dem Hintergrund jener Entwicklungen zu schildern. Dazu wird zunächst ein Überblick über den gesellschaftlichen, politischen und juristischen Umgang mit dem Nationalsozialismus in den frühen fünfziger Jahren gegeben, um dann die Entwicklung nachzuzeichnen, die dieser im letzten Drittel des Jahrzehnts durchmachte. Dann wird der Auschwitz-Prozess mit seiner Vorgeschichte dargestellt und ein Einblick in die juristischen Grundlagen des Urteils gegeben. Schließlich wird im dritten Kapitel die Presseberichterstattung zum Prozess kurz analysiert und der Versuch unternommen, die allerdings unzureichend dokumentierte Rezeption dieser Berichterstattung zu beschreiben und kurz zu deuten. Bei der verwendeten Literatur sind vor allem die Publikationen des Fritz Bauer-Institutes und Irmtrud Wojaks zu nennen, die den Auschwitz-Prozess am besten abdecken. Außerdem sei auf die Monographie von Gerhard Werle und Thomas Wandres hingewiesen, die neben einer umfassenden Zusammenfassung des Prozesses auch eine auszugsweise Dokumentation des Auschwitz-Urteils bietet.

Mit dem Beitritt Großbritanniens zur Entente Cordiale war die europäische Konstellation vorbereitet für den Krieg. Doch warum einigt sich Großbritannien mit zweien seiner größten Gegner jener Zeit? Warum schließt sich England nicht vielmehr dem Dreibund aus Italien, Österreich- Ungarn und dem deutschen Kaiserreich an? Was beeinträchtigte die Verhandlungen zwischen London und Berlin? Oder war das Bündnis schlichtweg nicht gewollt? Diesen Fragen soll in der Folgenden Arbeit nachgegangen werden.Aufgrund der hohen Komplexität können einzelne Aspekte nur kurz angerissen werden.

Jeder Teilaspekt wäre sicherlich eine eigene Arbeit wert. Doch soll hier der Gesamtzusammenhang untersucht und analysiert werden. Dabei stehen die Jahre 1898- 1902 besonders im Fokus. Zu jener Zeit waren die Verhandlungen zwischen Großbritannien und Deutschland am intensivsten und am weitesten vorangeschritten. Doch zunächst sollen die Internationalen Hintergründe betrachtet werden. Warum gab England seine Politik der „Splendid Isolation“ auf? Hier soll der Rahmen für die Folgenden Kapitel skizziert werden. Anschließend werden die Bündnisgespräche beschrieben. Hier soll gezeigt werden, dass London, oder zumindest Teile der Londoner Regierung durchaus gewillt waren mit dem Kaiserreich ein Verteidigungsbündnis einzugehen.

Daraufhin sollen Gründe für das Scheitern der Verhandlungen erwähnt und analysiert werden. Im Mittelpunkt stehen hierbei zwei für den Verfasser enorm wichtige Faktoren. Zunächst die öffentliche Meinung im Kontext des Burenkrieges und anschließend die Wirtschaftliche Rivalität. Da die deutsche Wirtschaft und ihr Wachstum den Grundstein für die Militär- und Rüstungspolitik bildeten, soll kurz noch eines der am häufigsten Erwähnten Argumente, die Flottenpolitik, für den Antagonismus zwischen den beiden Nationen um die Jahrhundertwende angerissen werden.
