Wir hinterfragen nicht ob das, was wir interpretieren auch dem entspricht, was unser Gegenüber tatsächlich empfindet. In der Kunst hat die Affektdarstellung eine Tradition, die bis in die Antike zurückreicht. Der ästhetische Begriff des Affekts bezieht sich laut der Erläuterungen des „Lexikon der ästhetischen Grundbegriffe“„sowohl auf die Ebene künstlerischen Darstellungs- bzw. Abbildungsinhalte als auch auf das expressive Wirkungspotenzial von Kunst.“ Die Film-Kunst bedient sich in dieser Tradition beider Funktionen der Affektdarstellung: erstens als Bildinhalt, um die Information über die Gefühle einer Figur zu transportieren und zweitens, um eine emotionale Wirkung beim Betrachter zu erzielen. Lässt sich nicht sogar sagen, dass es das vornehmliche Ziel von Kinofilmen ist, beim Zuschauer Emotionen zu wecken? Ist nicht sogar eines der wichtigsten Qualitätsmerkmale, ob man von einem kinematoraphischen Ereignis emotional berührt wurde? Das charakteristische der Filmsprache ist die Fähigkeit Handlungen aus unterschiedlichen Distanzen zu zeigen und so eine emotionale Reaktion herbeizuführen. Knut Hickethier bestätigt: „Durch den Wechsel der Einstellungsgrößen werden wir in unterschiedliche Nähe zum Objekt gesetzt, werden ihm nahegebracht und von ihm entfernt. Für die emotionale Steuerung spielt dies eine wesentliche Rolle,…“
