Cold Deck: a novel (West Word Fiction), by H. Lee Barnes

Jude is a Las Vegas casino dealer who barely survived the deadly MGM fire in 1980. More than two decades later, he’s still dealing, a tired, middle-aged man, divorced, struggling with debt, and trying to be a good father to his children. Then he loses his job and his car is totaled in an accident. When an attractive woman friend offers to help him get another job, Jude is happy to go along. Gradually, he realizes that his new job is part of an elaborate scheme to cheat a casino and that his own fate and that of his children depend on his finding the courage and ingenuity to extricate himself.

Cold Deck is the exciting story of an ordinary man who finds himself in extraordinary circumstances. Moving from Las Vegas’s mean streets to the insider’s world of casino workers, this is a story of survival set against the greed, fears, and glitz of Sin City.

From Booklist
Jude, a Vegas casino dealer down on his luck, barely manages alimony and child support on his low wages and sometimes worse tips. He knows dealing is where “hope and despair played off each other, where a dealer is reduced to little more than a soulless machine installed behind a layout to ensure the mathematics of profit.” A survivor of the awful 1980 MGM fire that claimed many lives and scarred his psyche, Jude still deals, decades later, in a resigned numbness. Then, in quick succession, he is fired, gets into a car accident, and is arrested. With his small world suddenly shrinking even more, Jude is primed to say yes when a virtual stranger offers him a job that involves cheating a casino. After a seeming eternity of being the nice guy who has let himself be beaten down by life, Jude might finally be ready to let loose and make some real money, if only his conscience will allow it. Gritty details and the realistic depiction of casino life demonstrate Barnes’ easy familiarity with the terrain of Sin City. --Julie Trevelyan

Review
“Cold Deck, H. Lee Barnes’ novel driven by a savvy even hell-bent narrator, immediately draws you into the underworld of Las Vegas gambling and won’t let you go until the treachery and intrigue run flat out.” --Darrell Spencer, author of One Mile Past Dangerous Curve

“The world of the Vegas casinos--particularly the less glitzy side--creates a wonderful palette for the novel, and Barnes stamps almost every page of the book with the feel of it. The author, unlike his likeably unlucky main character, is holding a winning hand here.” --Keith Lee Morris, author of The Greyhound God and The Dart League King

“If you read one Southwest-set crime fiction this summer, you should hotly consider making it Cold Deck. Barnes deals a winning, if understated, hand.”—Tucson Weekly (Tucson Weekly)

“. . . Barnes has crafted a worthy thriller. . .”—Vietnam Veterans of America, July/August 2013 (Vietnam Veterans of America)

“Barnes never fails his readers.”—Las Vegas Citylife (Las Vegas Citylife)

“Barnes’ low key prose rings with well-developed characters and authentic knowledge of the casino life, drawing you in and keeping the pages turning.”—Lahontan Valley News

Cold Deck
By Mark Bridge
I had trouble putting this book down once I got into it. I've been to Vegas a few times, and this book had the feel of the place and of those who live and work there. The plot kept me wondering how it was going to end, and I was still surprised. I also loved another book by this same author, again set in Los Vegas, called The Lucky. If you want a good read that keeps you engaged, try this!

No real plot
By L. A. Brundage
All of the characters were plain vanilla. This book just isn't worth reading. This book tried to use illegal gaming tricks to make
it interesting, but it did not work. Everyone already knows these tricks.
