An Inspiring E-Book to Set the Stage!

Have read all Patti Callahan's books and they never disappoint as she is a very talented author. This short e-book is a true story written with her sister, Barbi to set the stage for the NY Times bestselling author Patti Callahan Henry's upcoming novel "And Then I Found You" (April 2013). I have pre-ordered the e-Book coming out in April and look forward to reading.

Having lived in the Atlanta area (Midtown, Buckhead, Vinings) for many years, and North Georgia in a log cabin at Big Canoe, always enjoy settings in this area. Incredible how small the world is today with social media -how easy to locate and connect with lost family and loved ones. This is a special story of three sisters, as Barbi (Patti's younger sister) made a courageous choice as a teenager, pregnant and unmarried, offering her daughter up for adoption with a very happy ending. Twenty years later her daughter finds her mother and family thru Facebook and a friend request which created an answer to many prayers. An inspiring story and must read!

What a great idea!

I'm not sure what part of the bold-faced "this e-original short non-fiction story sets the stage for New York Times bestselling author Patti Callahan Henry's upcoming novel And Then I Found You" is unclear to the reviewer who gave this piece 1 star? Clearly some people have trouble reading, which is why the beauty of this "teaser" for Patti Callahan Henry's new full-length novel release would be lost on person. Those who do understand and appreciate words, and especially fans of Henry, will enjoy this little "snack." I, for one, loved having an extra dimension of the story to savor--an "appetizer" to a novel that is fully satisfying. I received an ARC for AND THEN I FOUND YOU, and I found my experience was enhanced buying this short, knowing that the novel was based on a true story, and getting a sense of that story before diving in. If you are looking for a full fiction story, you will not find it in FRIEND REQUEST, but you will find a nice complement to your reading experience of AND THEN I FOUND YOU (a wonderful full story).

Background on the experience that led to And Then I Found You

When I saw that Ms. Henry also wrote this background short non-fiction about her sister's being contacted by the daughter she gave to an adoptive family, I had to read it. I loved And Then I Found You, and this book renewed my emotional empathy with this birth mother and her difficult decision to offer her first born to an adoptive family. To me, this was a very loving thing to do. I applaud Barbie for courage and determination to give her baby a better life than she could offer when her child was born.

Bis zu den 80er Jahren war der Frontalunterricht / lehrerorientierter Unterricht die hauptsächlich verwendete Unterrichtsform in deutschen Schulen. Doch mit dieser Art der Wissensvermittlung erreichte der Lehrer immer seltener Interesse bei den Schülern. Jörg Ramseger brachte 1977 in seinem Buch „Offener Unterricht in der Erprobung: Erfahrungen mit einem didaktischen Modell“ als erster die neue Idee der Öffnung des Unterrichts an die Öffentlichkeit. In diesem Buch wurde unter anderem anhand von Fallstudien, Unterrichtsdokumenten und Beobachtungsprotokollen überprüft, inwiefern Kinder einen Einfluss auf den Ablauf des Unterrichts haben (vgl. Ramseger, 1977, S.1). Dieser neu gelegte Grundstein „Offener Unterricht“ bildete nach und nach eine weitere Unterrichtsform neben dem Frontalunterricht.
Offener Unterricht fasst verschiedene Instrumente des abwechslungsreichen Lehrens zusammen. Dazu gehören zum Beispiel Freiarbeit, Tagespläne und Wochenpläne.
In dieser Arbeit wird im Theorieteil die Definition und Bestandteile des Offenen Unterrichts vorgestellt und dabei hauptsächlich auf die Funktion des Wochenplans eingegangen. Im darauffolgenden Praxisteil wird anhand eines selbsterstellten Unterrichtsbeispiels die Wochenplanarbeit dargestellt und Vor- sowie Nachteile ausgearbeitet. Dies basiert auf dem Hintergrund eines typischen Themenbereiches aus dem Sachunterricht. Im Resümee folgt eine kurze Zusammenfassung des Schwerpunktthemas und eine Prognose über die pädagogische Bedeutung der Wochenplanarbeit in der zukünftigen Unterrichtsgestaltung.

The novel also continues the stories of the two main characters of the previous book: Jean Le Drapier, now the powerful Merlin of St. Gilles' Well, and Gilles de Rais, the valiant and troubled French nobleman who fights the English invaders, and who will one day become the murderous Bluebeard. The second book in a series, The Merlin of the Oak Wood is obviously a bridging work, with the inevitable lack of a definitive conclusion, but it ably continues the story of Jeanne d'Arc and her allies-to-be.

Smoothly blending the real and the magical, Chamberlin puts French history to masterly use in another appealing chapter in her medieval saga centered on Joan of Arc. (Despite the title, "the great magician Merlin in ancient days" is mentioned only twice by name.) In the first volume, The Merlin of St. Gilles' Well (1999), Joan figured in the visions of a young peasant boy-turned-magician, Yann. In the present novel the teenaged Joan, still called Jehannette, takes center stage, already possessed by "Voices." Amid credible scenes that range from ordinary rural life to the ravages of war, Joan encounters a host of historical characters, including the weak Dauphin, who later becomes king, and Robert de Baudricourt, governor of Vaucouleurs, who supports Joan after she predicts the siege of Orleans. Most prominent, though, is the dashing Gilles de Rais, who appeared in the earlier book and has yet to devolve into the sexual monster and child murderer of Bluebeard legend. Yann, "milk brother" to Gilles, also returns to play a key part. The author is particularly good at adumbrating the paganism lurking beneath the Christian surface of the early 15th century, when people took witchcraft seriously indeed. Since Joan is only starting her eventful journey, the novel lacks a strong climax, but this is to be expected in a series that fans won't want to see end. Chamberlin deserves an honorable place in the company of such writers as Twain, Shaw and Anouilh who have dramatized the life of the Maid of Orleans.

Fantastic reading expeience

In 1425 France, soldiers' blood continues to flows as decades of war divides the country. England and Burgundy occupy land that rightfully belongs to the French. Soldier-witch Gilles de Raes and his milk brother witch Yann know that the nation will continue to be a river of blood before Merlin's prophecy will save the earth in the guise of a maid from the Bois-Chenau.

In Domenry, Jehannette D'Arc wears the red kirtlee that signifies she is not available for courting. She hears voices in her head that she believes is God telling her what he wants her to do. Unlike most females, Jehannette can ride a horse and fight as good as any male. To many she is the incarnation of Merlin's prophecy and they are ready to follow her into hell once she gives the signal.

Ann Chamberlin writes a powerful mix of mysticism and fact to create the exhaling THE MERLIN OF THE OAK WOODS, setting the stage for Joan of Arc's endeavor to drive invaders from French soil. The juxtaposition of battle scenes with a child growing into a warrior-woman is believable and quite colorful. The only drawback to this powerful historical novel is that readers will need to wait one year for book two.

Not just fiction but an Anti-Reality History for mature readers

Historical rights are wrong, left is right, the Church is immoral, and evil is virtuous as long as the goal is OK.

This story, and I must assume the author herself, gives the feeling of a poetic but unfortunately lost soul seeking desperately to overturn anything accepted as "true" or "good" in order to induce a reaction while telling her imagined enlightened version of a period of historical transformation.

The story does successfully recreate the feeling of chaos and mystery that must have surrounded rural life in the middle ages during time of conflict and political upheaval, and throws some intriguing glimpses into the superstitions of the period.

The author has an effective eye for injecting realistic as well as romantic detail and description into each scene, and drops historical colloquialisms as though she uses medieval terms in everyday conversation. Very well.

This story isn't, however, about Merlin, nor is the majority of this entry in the series even about Joan of Arc (still 'Jehannette' here), but rather about the rewriting of history toward a pathetic anti-Christian worldview provided through the eyes of the violent and homosexual anti-hero Gilles. She gives him some severely sympathetic treatment, attempting to draw the reader into identifying with this pagan worldview as well. It is his character that provides the predictable sniping at how weak and immoral all of the self-righteous stick-figure characters - who are held up as representatives of historical Christians - supposedly are. Hopefully the author really isn't on a one-woman anti-Crusade against the historically positive influence of any Christian character, any Alpha Male, or even the power of true (traditional) femininity, in the guise of white-washing Celtic-style pagan magik.

The sexual overtones and mature-reader-only twisting of gender roles do include a spooky narrative of our female future heroine (Joan) - who grew up as a tomboy able to beat up the surrounding males, of course (french feminism 101, anyone?) - in a memorable scene describing her first clothing of herself in a man's armor. Unfortunately, Gilles development as a young warrior is also well detailed as his sexuality is perverted toward homosexual experience through childhood molestation by the uncle he idolized. Too much of the otherwise creative historical fiction is spent in scenes describing the development of this twisted lust and the vivid emotional depiction of his depravity. This baser undercurrent throughout the story surely removes this book from any reading lists appropriate to younger readers (I would place it at collegiate).

The author is creative and talented, but appears to actually buy into the extreme modern (certainly not classical) liberal side of historical fiction rewriters. Of course, if you're pro-Wiccan, pagan, or a fan of alternative occultic world views - that run not magically parallel to, but counter to the truth - you'll find a satisfying fantasy past in the imagination of Ann Chamberlin.

If you're in Germany any time soon, you may also find the follow-up story "Der Erbe des Ermiten" in the bargain bin at the airport, though I'll have to read the entire thing before I critique it here. Suffice it to say we can expect Gilles to develop into a real monster, and Joan won't be portrayed as a saintly Christian heroine fighting for freedom, but a 'virtuous' little witch sensitive to and following the advice of spirit guide Voices...which others would generally refer to mildly as 'fallen angels.' We'll see...

I couldn't put it down!

,,,I think this book is a brilliant piece of fiction, an intelligent fantasy about the pagan culture of medieval Europe. When you start reading it you just get lost in it, you feel like you're really there. I think it's as close as we'll ever get to experiencing pagan life in the Middle Ages. I've read other Ann Chamberlin books and I think she's really a fine writer; I know that The Merlin of St. Gilles' Well was named "One of the Ten Best Fantasy and SF Novels of the Year" by Booklist. If you like really good historical novels and/or fantasy novels, fine prose, and a compelling story, you'll love this. Happy reading!

Die zentrale Bedeutung des Geschichtsbildes für eine solche Identität anerkennend, wird die Vergangenheitspolitik Deutschlands den Rahmen bilden, an dem dargestellt werden kann, wie sich Geschichtsbilder verändern, wie sie im Laufe der Zeit festgeschrieben werden und sich identitätsbildend auswirken. Das beherrschende Thema deutscher Vergangenheits- und Erinnerungspolitik ist natürlich das Nationalsozialistische Regime unter dessen Regie sich die schlimmsten Verbrechen des vergangenen Jahrhunderts ereignet haben. Die sich in diesem Zusammenhang aufdrängenden Fragen sind: wie eine solche Vergangenheit überhaupt Gegenstand von Identitätsstiftung sein kann und wenn ja, wie Geschichte in Deutschland gelesen wurde, um eine gemeinsame Identität nicht zu gefährden.In einem ersten Teil sollen die anfänglichen Anstrengungen der fünfziger und sechziger Jahre dargestellt und in einem weiteren Abschnitt die aktuelle Lage umrissen werden. Ein theoretischer Exkurs wird sich mit der Bedeutung von Gedächtnis als Grundlage von Erinnerung auseinandersetzen und damit inwieweit diese einen gemeinsamen kulturellen Wahrnehmungsrahmen produziert und/oder von ihm abhängt. Im letzten vergleichenden Teil wird eine Konklusion versucht, wie spezifisch deutsche Erinnerungspolitik eine deutsche Identität herausgebildet hat und an welchen Punkten eine solche immer noch als problematisch empfunden wird. Die dabei leitende These soll sein, dass auf Grund der schweren historischen Hypothek, die auf den Deutschen lastet, ein Identität weniger an der Geschichte und dem Bild davon festgemacht wird, sondern sich vielmehr an dem spezifischen Umgang damit konstituiert Bei allen Betrachtungen um kollektive, historische oder nationale Identität darf nicht übersehen werden, dass der Identitätsbegriff keineswegs ein homogener ist. Im Rahmen der personalen Identität ist er noch am klarsten umrissen, bei der Gruppen- oder kulturellen Identität fehlt nahezu deutliche Klärung dessen was er umschreiben soll. Die folgende Arbeit orientiert sich im wesentlichen an dem Begriff des kollektiven Gedächtnisses oder historischen Identität, wie er sich in der jüngeren historischen Wissenschaft herausgebildet hat.

His remarkable RAF career was followed by an eventful civilian career in aviation, which saw him organize rallies at places such as Sywell, encouraging 'flying for fun'. Both halves of his flying life are detailed here in chronological order and in his own words. Minor additions have been made to offer technical descriptions to readers unfamiliar with Paul's aviation vocabulary.

The fifty year span of his career covered an incredible period of aviation history; from gaining his license in the 1920s to his retirement in the 1970s, there was virtually no iconic or, for that matter, obscure aircraft that Christopher Paul did not fly. Included in the book is an extensive appendix in which Paul details, again in chronological order, every aircraft type he flew during his career. It is a veritable roll of honor of every conceivable aircraft, both British built and International, across arguably the most important period of aviation development.

Interwoven with his own career progression and experiences are world events and situations. Coupled with this we can clearly see the development of aircraft over a period of over fifty years.
