From the Author
"One of the brightest signs of the times in that many Christians in our Young People's Societies and churches are observing a "quiet hour" daily. In this age of rush and activity we need some special call to go apart and be alone with God for a part of each day. Any man or woman who does this faithfully and earnestly cannot be more than twenty-four hours away from God."

"This selection given in this volume were first published in the monthly issues of the "Record of Christian Work," and were found very helpful for devotional purposes. Great for Quite Time; OK for Quotes by Christians
By C. B. Irwin
.
I enjoy this book for two reasons:
(1) It has a short verse (or a few short verses) of the Bible for each day of the year and a quote by a well-known (or not so well-known) Christian regarding that (those) verse(s). Some of the well-know Christians quoted are Martin Luther, C.H. Spurgeon, J. Hudson Taylor, Pascal, and D.L. Moody himself (he uses the word "selected" to signify his own quotes).
(2) The book has an index of Scriptures quoted in the book, so it may use it to find quotes to use when teaching on a specific verse of the Bible.
What this book lacks: The full names are not given for some of the Christians quoted. Mr. Moody assumes his readers know who they are. Also, there is no index of Christians quoted, so you may not easily search for the quotes by author.
One of my favorite quotes of the book is this quote by Moody: "The preaching that this world needs most is the sermons in shoes that are walking with Jesus Christ."

Great
By Jerry L Busby
We all need to slow down and allow God to talk to us. It seems I am always doing the talking and requesting and given my shopping orders. This book helped me to see we need to be quite and listen for God to give us Peace. No I haven herd Him say anything or seen a burning bush but I have had His Word the Bible show me what I was looking for or needed. The folks in Thoughts for the Quite Hour found the same thing. Worth reading, many times !

Thailand: The Worldly Kingdom, by Maurizio Peleggi

Tourist adverts and glossy publications present Thailand as an exotic country with a rich cultural heritage, strong religious traditions and a much-loved monarchy. Historians too have contributed to Thailand’s international allure by asserting its unique historical and cultural continuity in comparison to the other countries of South-East Asia, whose modern histories are stained by colonialism and nationalist struggles for independence.

Thailand: The Worldly Kingdom challenges these commonplaces by offering a reinterpretation of the emergence and development of the Thai nation-state, showing it to be a long-term process shaped by interactions with the outside world in the pursuit of civilization and, more recently, globalization. Maurizio Peleggi’s original approach is reflected in the book’s thematic structure, with chapters that investigate, among other issues, the geographical, linguistic and ethnic diversity of the territories that came to form modern Thailand; changes in class and gender relations; the role of institutions and ideologies; and the reinvention of Thai identity from within through a repackaging of its heritage in magazines, novels, art and the mass media. Peleggi goes on to explore how the Thai people relate to the outside world: their prototypical enemies – the Burmese; southern Chinese immigrants; and, above all, farang – Westerners – who have been involved in the region since the seventeenth century and yet remain, for the Thais, the quintessential ‘other’.

Thailand: The Worldly Kingdom is a concise yet exceptional introduction to the myriad complexities that lie behind Thailand’s blandly exotic facade.

'Maurizio Peleggi's new book on the modern history of Thailand offer a boldly innovative introduction to the kingdom and its nation-building projects. It concentrates on the long twentieth century when Thailand underwent seismic shifts in nearly every arena of human and institutional life, and from which the country emerged as 'modern' ... it successfully assimilates the most recent historical and historiographical scholarship on Thailand into a new narrative ... an intrepid and original treatment of both history and Thailand.' - South East Asia Research

But if you want to see how Thailand developed in interaction with the world outside of Thailand and how it formed the "culture, institution and "civilization" of Thailand - you will find this book fantastic and very well documented.

Waiting 'Til the Midnight Hour: A Narrative History of Black Power in America, by Peniel E. Joseph

A gripping narrative that brings to life a legendary moment in American history: the birth, life, and death of the Black Power movement

With the rallying cry of "Black Power!" in 1966, a group of black activists, including Stokely Carmichael and Huey P. Newton, turned their backs on Martin Luther King's pacifism and, building on Malcolm X's legacy, pioneered a radical new approach to the fight for equality. Waiting 'Til the Midnight Hour is a history of the Black Power movement, that storied group of men and women who would become American icons of the struggle for racial equality.

Peniel E. Joseph traces the history of the men and women of the movement—many of them famous or infamous, others forgotten. Waiting 'Til the Midnight Hour begins in Harlem in the 1950s, where, despite the Cold War's hostile climate, black writers, artists, and activists built a new urban militancy that was the movement's earliest incarnation. In a series of character-driven chapters, we witness the rise of Black Power groups such as the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and the Black Panthers, and with them, on both coasts of the country, a fundamental change in the way Americans understood the unfinished business of racial equality and integration.

Drawing on original archival research and more than sixty original oral histories, this narrative history vividly invokes the way in which Black Power redefined black identity and culture and in the process redrew the landscape of American race relations.

From Publishers Weekly
Whereas black nationalism can be traced to Marcus Garvey (and his predecessors), Black Power was first articulated by Stokely Carmichael in 1966. This accessible survey looks at "the murky depths of a movement that paralleled, and at times overlapped, the heroic civil rights era," beginning in the late 1950s, with the rise of the Black Muslims, and ending in 1975. Joseph, who teaches Africana studies at SUNY–Stony Brook, brings to light less-known characters like the Rev. Albert Cleage Jr. of Detroit, who helped organize the 1963 Walk for Freedom a month before the March on Washington, as well as fresh judgments on figures like Malcolm X, "black America's prosecuting attorney." He analyzes the negative media coverage of Black Power, offers a discerning take on Carmichael and Charles Hamilton's 1967 book, Black Power, and recounts the emergence of the Black Arts movement. The Black Panthers also get consistent attention, in rise and decline. Drawing on a rich set of sources, including interviews and oral histories, the book also illuminates flash points in Newark, N.J.; Oakland, Calif.; and the Sixth Pan-African Congress in Dar es Salaam in 1974. Though it focuses more on politics than culture—e.g., the 1968 Olympics protest gets just a footnote—it's a good introduction to the topic. (Aug.)

From Booklist
Joseph, African studies professor, surveys the full geographic and political panorama of the black power movement. He begins with the Southern movement and the political organizing of SNCC and SCLC, then moves on to portray the crisis in the movement reflected by the rise of Stokely Carmichael and the breach of the traditional white-black alliance. From there, Joseph analyzes the shift to the West Coast, initiated through the rise of the Black Panthers and their leader Huey Newton becoming symbols of the black power movement. Finally, Joseph examines attempts at political organizing in the North, reflected in the black political convention in Gary, Indiana, in 1972 and Amiri Baraka's subsequent activism in Newark, which resulted in the election of a black mayor. While Joseph explores the interplay between SNCC and Martin Luther King Jr., as well as Malcolm X's symbolic engagement, he also highlights figures who were significant though more historically obscure, including Robert Williams, the Revolutionary Action Movement (RAM), and Harold Cruse, rounding out a more complete overview of this era. Review
Peniel Joseph represents the best of a new generation of scholars whose work will substantially revise our understanding of the Black Freedom Movement. Provocative and masterfully written, Waiting 'Til the Midnight Hour not only reveals the radical roots of Black Power but places the key activists and struggles within a global framework. It is one of those critically important books that will be read and debated for many years to come.

A gripping story well-told
By Carlito's Way
This book is outstanding! I don't know what I was expecting. I thought, perhaps, that it was going to be an apologia regarding the Panthers. Or, if not that, it would be a polemic detailing how the Panthers "messed everything up". You see, there is a generally accepted narrative regarding the struggle for African-American equality in this country. The narrative goes like this: for a number of complicated reasons, Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery through the Emancipation Proclamation. Eventually, this was followed by Jim Crow segregation and "separate but equal". Various African-Americans engaged in a heroic civil-rights struggle, and they were aided in this struggle by whites (Communist and otherwise) and other sympathetic ethnic groups. The Civil-Rights Era coincided with and/or encompassed an age of general period of civil disobedience which included Vietnam War protests, Labor Union unrest and a continuing feminism movement. A number of solid victories came from the Civil Rights Era, namely, Brown v. Board of Education and the Voting Rights Act. Also, a number of iconic figures, and moments, emerged from this era, namely, Rosa Parks (and the Montgomery Bus Boycott), and Martin Luther King Jr. (and the March on Washington). Then these craaaaaaaazy kids came along, toting guns in San Francisco and following around cops in Oakland. Stokely Carmichael shouted "Black Power!!" at a March Against Fear in Mississippi in 1966. Olympic Medalists Tommie Smith and John Carlos gave Black Power salutes on the medal stand at the 1968 Olympics. In the 60 Minutes special, "The Hate That Hate Produced", Mike Wallace told America that a huge group of angry, angry, angry Muslims were proliferating in New York, and Malcolm X was the head nut. All of a sudden, crazy radicals replaced the politics of integration, non-violent protest and collaboration with that of aggressive "black self-esteem" and incendiary revolutionary rhetoric. As a result, these excesses dragged everything down, precipitating a Civil Rights decline. This, coupled with a conservative backlash, continues negatively to affect the lives of African-Americans today. That's the general narrative.

What Dr. Joseph's book does is blow up this narrative by examining the Black Power Movement as a legitimate movement separate and distinct from the Civil Rights Movement. His book illuminates the import and continuing influence of Black Power, while remaining cognizant of the flaws of its leaders. The book places Black Power within a global context, showing that Black Power was about more than the Black Panthers and the Nation of Islam. (He writes about 1955 Afro-Asian Conference in Bandung and Catros's trip to New York in 1960, when he made a point of meeting with Malcolm X.) Of course, the book DOES scrutinize the Black Panthers and the Nation of Islam as well. Dr. Joseph highlights the stars of this period: Malcolm X, Huey P. Newton and Stokely Carmichael. In fact, this book makes clear that Stokely Carmichael is such a seminal figure that he's worthy of having a separate book devoted entirely to him. But Dr. Joseph also tells the stories of lesser known figures such as William Worthy, Robert Williams, Albert Cleage, Amiri Baraka and Sonia Sanchez. He argues persuasively that Lorraine Hansberry's, "A Raisin In the Sun" is actually a radical play. He identifies the radical roots of King and he eloquently disseminates what Baraka meant in his essay, "Black Is A Country".

When you look in the back of this book, you see that it has a 22-page bibliography. Sources include interviews and oral histories, as well as extensive archival material. It's clear Dr. Joseph has done his homework. Yet, when you read it, the book does not come off as an inaccessible ivory tower product full of incomprehensible jargon. He presents the story of Black Power as a gripping narrative. He shows the reader that, in a nutshell, the Black Power Movement provides lessons for today's generation of activists. When I read this book, I couldn't believe that no one thought to write such a book before now- a book that treats Black Power as seriously as "Bearing The Cross", "Parting The Waters", "Pillar Of Fire" and "At Canaan's Edge" treat the Civil Rights Era. If you want insight into the humanity of iconic Black Power figures and a clearer picture of the struggle that continues today, this book is the place to start.

Humane, full-spectrum storytelling
By Paul Grant
This book is about more than politics. It's about people, people who are indeed political creatures, but are red-blooded people, with loves, and creativity, and petty rivalries, and regional differences.

Peniel Joseph has really served the public here. I hope this book is picked up by people (like myself) born after this narrative's conclusion. By moving beyond the waters of Malcolm X and Eldridge Cleaver, and looking into the arts, and cultural developments like Kwanzaa, and religion, he was actually able to bring focus to the narrative.

It was very refreshing to see Martin Luther King as more than a teddy-bear on the one hand, and more than a broken record on the other. He was in the first instance a minister--meaning a person of faith who worked with people, in all their humanity. King changed his mind about realities, and grew, and related to people with a flexibility not shared by, say, philosophers.

Joseph leaves us with the stories of men and women, not always heroes, and not too unlike ourselves in their daily lives.

My only regret is the book's ending in 1974. It would have been nice to understand black power's interface with early hip hop, and such.

Black power has come full circle
By tpw79
Gill Scott-Heron once said "the revolution will not be televised" - so Peniel E. Joseph wrote about it instead. In his provocative book, "Waiting `Til The Midnight Hour: A Narrative History of Black Power in America," the young Brandeis University professor/social activist chronicles the highlights and lowlights of the people and the ideas that made up organized black radicalism in the United States over the last century. While the seeds of black power bore their roots in Marcus Garvey's United Negro Improvement Association, the book really takes off during the burgeoning civil rights movement in the 1960s, when black militants like Stokley Carmichael and Malcolm X began to question Dr. Martin Luther King's peaceful resistance tactics to address racism. Joseph does a good job of giving comprehensive biographies of not only the well-known key players like Amiri Baraka, James Baldwin and Angela Davis, the author also pays homage to long-forgotten names, such as renegade journalist William Worthy who befriended Communist leaders in Viet Nam and Cuba during the height of Sen. Joe McCarthy's witch trials. Joseph also points out the failures of some black power groups, most notably the Black Panthers, the militant, Oakland-based cadre that fell from national prominence due to internal conflicts and the vices of the Party's leadership (Huey Newton's drug addiction and Eldridge Cleaver's misogyny and conversion to conservatism). The black power movement left an indelible mark in American history, as can be seen in today's social movements and particularly the rise of hip hop in the 1980s. The black power movement also provided an opportunity for African Americans to see themselves on the international level and unite with other blacks worldwide in the name of Pan-Africanism. With the high amount of support for Sen. Barack Obama's Presidential aspirations from the African Diaspora, its seems like black power may have come full circle. It only begs the question - what would Marcus Garvey have thought of Obama if he lived today?

Benedict Arnold in the Company of Heroes: The Lives of the Extraordinary Patriots Who Followed Arnold to Canada at the Start of the America

"Hundreds of Men followed Colonel Benedict Arnold northward on his famous expedition to capture Quebec in late December 1775. They joined with General Richard Montgomery, but after Montgomery was killed by enemy fire, his men retreated. Arnold’s troops, however, continued fighting after Arnold fell wounded and only surrendered when hopelessly outnumbered and trapped inside the city. Who were these men and what became of them? Arthur Lefkowitz answers these questions in his fresh and compelling Benedict Arnold in the Company of Heroes.

An award-winning writer on the American Revolution, Lefkowitz spent years searching through archival materials to paint splendid and compelling portraits of Arnold’s amazing cast of veterans whose fates offer a fascinating glimpse into the lives of early American patriots. His original monograph begins with an overview of the failed Canadian invasion before following these men into prison (where some devised intricate plots to break out and even seize weapons to capture the city). Despite their hardships, many returned to the rebel army to continue their fight for independence.

Arnold’s men, explained George Washington, were worthy of particular notice and they never disappointed him. Some of those portrayed in detail include Charles Porterfield (who led troops at Brandywine); Daniel Morgan (the hero of Cowpens); Henry Dearborn and Timothy Bigelow (who fought alongside their old commander at Saratoga); Christian Febiger and Return Jonathan Meigs (who were at the forefront of the attack on Stony Point); Simeon Thayer (who refused to surrender Fort Mifflin); and Colonel Aaron Burr (whose impressive wartime record was marred by his tumultuous political career). What accounts for the inspired leadership of so many veterans from Arnold’s expedition? Lefkowitz presents a compelling argument that they learned by example from Benedict Arnold, himself a courageous and charismatic officer.

Original, fast-paced, and deeply researched, Benedict Arnold in the Company of Heroes is essential reading for everyone interested in our endlessly fascinating American Revolution."

A Worthy Addition to the American Revolution Library
By Bill Emblom
Author Arthur Lefkowitz's book entitled Benedict Arnold's Army was one of the best books I have read on the American Revolution. His latest book entitled Benedict's Arnold in the Company of Heroes also covers Arnold's march through the Maine wilderness to Quebec City, Canada. In addition, however, it emphasizes the role played by Arnold's men for the remainder of the war. This book covers the march on Quebec but not to the extent his previous book did. It also covers the controversial Battle of Saratoga in which Arnold, serving under Horatio Gates, quarreled with Gates who later downplayed Arnold's contributions in the fray.

Author Lefkowitz spends a good deal of time, as the title suggests, providing information on those who served under Arnold such as Henry Dearborn (Dearborn, Michigan) and Daniel Morgan. Some of them went on to live long lives while others experienced misfortune. Most of these men the author speaks about I have never heard of and perhaps it's time we did. I have to admit I found this part of the book to be somewhat of a struggle.

Arnold's act of betrayal is covered in detail along with the capture of Major Andre near Tarrytown, New York. I wasn't aware of the plot to kidnap Arnold and have him returned to Washington's army to be hanged. If Arnold had been killed at Quebec or Saratoga he would have gone down in history as one of America's greatest patriots. There was absolutely no doubting Arnold's bravery and determination. However, his disappointment in feeling neglected involving military promotions led to anger and frustration and a belief he was above everyone else. His mentor was General Richard Montgomery who was killed at Quebec. Had Montgomery lived perhaps he would have been able to steer Arnold in the right direction since Arnold gladly accepted his subservient role to Montgomery.

For those interested in learning more about Benedict Arnold this book is a worthy addition to your library.

Benedict Arnold in the Company of Heroes
By Kim Burdick
.
"Benedict Arnold in the Company of Heroes" is an easy and informative read.

Benedict Arnold is one of America's greatest enigmas. A hero and a traitor, a magnificent yet temperamental leader, Arnold continues to intrigue us long after many of his nemesises have been forgotten. His leadership abilities have rarely been disputed. This book's intention is to capture the achievements of Benedict Arnold's men after they left Quebec.

Arthur Lefkowitz has utilized both fresh primary documents and familiar secondary sources to craft his study. Footnotes at the bottom of each page are rarely seen today, but here they are a welcome help to the curious reader.

His passion for the topic is most evident when he describes the horrific slog Arnold's men made to Canada and their experiences in Quebec's Dauphine Prison. The book comes alive in those chapters.

There is so much interesting material presented in this book that the stories of Arnold's men begin to blurr together. A simple colophon or subtitle added by the graphic designer, clearly indicating the beginning and end of each soldier's account, would have been a useful scaffolding tool.

I hope the editors will encourage Arthur Lefkowitz to write more about the two "biggies" featured in this book, the always interesting and intrepid Daniel Morgan, and Aaron Burr. The connections and parallels between Arnold and Burr would make a great next book for Lefkowitz.

Benedict Arnold’s Quebec Expedition and the Shaping of the Early Republic
By A. A. Nofi
A summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com:

'On September 21, 1775, Benedict Arnold set out with some 1,100 Patriot troops to follow the Kennebec River through the wilderness of Maine to Quebec, as part of a coordinated American strategy to capture the fortress-city. Only about 650 of the troops made it by November 9th, the rest having deserted, died, or fallen ill and been left behind. More men were lost during the attempt to storm the city at Midnight on December 31st and in the winter siege and retreat that followed. Lefkowitz, author of several works on the Revolutionary War, who correctly dubs these men “a company of heroes,” does an excellent job of discussing the organization, course, and failure of the expedition. But he doesn’t stop there. Lefkowitz follows Arnold and his men through the war and beyond into the years that followed, during which a surprising number of them attained some distinction, nearly a dozen rising to general rank and others to high judicial or political office. This is a book worth reading not only for those interested in the military side of the Revolution, but also in American life and society during the formative years of the Republic.'
