About the Author
H. Lee Barnes is a former Green Beret and Vietnam War veteran who has worked as a deputy sheriff, private investigator, and casino dealer. He currently teaches English and creative writing at the Community College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas. He is the author of three short story collections, another novel, a memoir, and a nonfiction book about casino workers. His short fiction has received the Willamette Fiction Award and the Arizona Authors Association Fiction Award, and in 2009, he was elected to the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame.

Cold Deck

I had trouble putting this book down once I got into it. I've been to Vegas a few times, and this book had the feel of the place and of those who live and work there. The plot kept me wondering how it was going to end, and I was still surprised. I also loved another book by this same author, again set in Los Vegas, called The Lucky. If you want a good read that keeps you engaged, try this!

All of the characters were plain vanilla. This book just isn't worth reading. This book tried to use illegal gaming tricks to make
it interesting, but it did not work. Everyone already knows these tricks.

About the Author

Kurt Ament is a technical writer, editor and indexer with extensive experience in print and online publishing. Since 1988 he has developed automated indexing systems, corporate style guides, knowledge management systems, master glossaries, master indexes, and user interface guidelines for companies such as Hewlett-Packard, Hughes Aircraft Company, Symantec Corporation, and Xerox Corporation. A graduate with honors of philosophy from the University of California at Berkeley, he completed a five-year sequential program in technical communication at UCLA. He is a senior member of the Society for Technical Communication.

A Good Quick Reference

At only 86 pages (excluding its own index and prefatory material), this book is not going to make you a master indexer, but it IS a great quick reference to the subject. As a technical writer for 25 years, I was pleased to find that I learned a few things from it. And although some of the topics seem common-sense rather than innovative, it never hurts to be reminded of the basics.
I also like the format of the book--it's very easy to find specific topics and to dip into it to answer a specific question. I am buying a copy for each writer in my publications department!

Indexing: A Nuts-and-Bolts Guide for Technical Writers

I honestly wanted to like this book; instead, I was quite disappointed. The author's basic premise is that indexing is not "rocket science" and that anyone can index quickly and effectively if they follow his ten-step technique. Unfortunately, the book's index, which has many flaws, defeats the author's premise.
Many of the index's problems involve See references. The author advises authors to create as many of them as possible. That is analagous to ruining a good recipe with as much pepper as you can find! Readers do not appreciate being bounced around the index unnecessarily.
The author also advises writers not to edit an index until they have created all of the entries for it. That strategy (not doing interim edits) almost guarantees that the index will be flawed ... and the index for this book is proof of that...

Good for Beginning Indexers

I used this book for my first major indexing project and it worked well for me. I appreciated the easy to find details for each step. The process also dovetailed nicely with my modular topic-driven content that could tie back to the steps. For example, to index topics that are considered procedures, I simply followed the steps on indexing procedures. I know that after I get more experienced with indexing I will want to branch out and read up more on the "art" of indexing, but for now I'm happy to use Ament's approach.

When Frederick Jackson Turner analyzed the significance of the Frontier in American history, he claimed that the true American character was not influenced by Europe, but built by the constant, strenuous interaction with and the heroically endured hardships of nature’s wildness, which presented itself to the pioneers along the frontier line up until 1890, when the frontier was considered officially closed (Turner 1893). Accordingly, nature and wilderness play an important role in American history, character, and literature. Wilderness visualized as trees or the woods in general, symbolizes a lawless place and, thus, not only allowing for the idea of beasts but also of criminals living there. The uncanny in this picture is obvious and allows for mystifications quite a lot. Besides symbolizing a place of evil, wilderness has also been a space for the individual, most evident in the Puritan idea of expelling non-conformist people, sinners, from the community and sending them to exile into the woods. In this regard, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Scarlet Letter and its adulterous protagonist Hester Prynne serve as a perfect example from literature.
In this instant it becomes clear, that wilderness and civilization serve as binary oppositions, that have been primarily favored as neatly separated categories in the Puritan thinking. Civilization has been praised as the ideal, refining, and humane state, which can only be realized in the community and its democratic institutions. The missionary thought of bringing civilization to the continent and, thus, taming the wilderness, evoked a new idea: that of Manifest Destiny. Pioneers turn into the chosen people, bringing light into the darkness of the wild continent.
The author would like to note that the following pages were attempted to be structured according to those concepts. Privately issued in 1813, Queen Mab was perhaps Shelley's most intellectually ambitious work, articulating his views of science, politics, history, religion, society, and individual human relations. Subtitled A Philosophical Poem: With Notes, it became his most influential—and pirated—poem during much of the nineteenth century, a favorite among reformers and radicals. The Esdaile Notebook, a cycle of fifty-eight early poems, exhibits an astonishing range of verse forms. Unpublished until 1964, this sequence is vital in understanding how the poet mastered his craft.

As in the acclaimed first volume, these works have been critically edited by Donald H. Reiman and Neil Fraistat. The poems are presented as Shelley intended, with textual variants included in footnotes. Following the poems are extensive discussions of the circumstances of their composition and the influences they reflect; their publication or circulation by other means; their reception at the time of publication and in the decades since; their re-publication, both authorized and unauthorized; and their place in Shelley's intellectual and aesthetic development.

Auguste Dupin, oder wie er sie selbst nennt „tales of ratiocination“, hat Edgar Allan Poe zweifellos den Beginn eines neuen Genres initiiert. Die Detektivgeschichte war geboren und fand viele Nachahmer. Wenngleich mehrere Kurzgeschichten Poes Charakteristika der Detektivgeschichte beinhalten, sind es doch nur drei Geschichten, die heute zu den „wahren“ ihrer Gattung zählen,The Murders in the Rue Morgue(1841),The Mystery of Marie Roget(1842) undThe Purloined Letter(1844). Sie unterscheiden sich von ersten Versuchen, wieThe Oblong Box(1844) undThou Art the Man(1844), vor allem durch die Erzählperspektive. Während bei letzteren der Erzähler der Geschichten zugleich derjenige ist, der das Rätsel löst, gibt es bei den „wahren“ Detektivgeschichten einen Erzähler und einen Detektiven mit scheinbar übermenschlichen analytischen Fähigkeiten. Der Erzähler fungiert sozusagen als Vermittler zwischen diesem Detektiv und dem Leser. Anhand der drei genannten Kurzgeschichten ist deutlich Poes Entwicklung des Genres zu erkennen.The Purloined Letterschließt die Trilogie um den Detektiv Dupin ab und wird meist auch als ausgereiftestes Werk in dieser Reihe betrachtet. Poe hat mit vielen seiner Kurzgeschichten und Gedichte die Leser vor große Rätsel gestellt. Die Detektivgeschichten stechen jedoch in einer Eigenschaft besonders hervor; der Leser fühlt sich dem nahezu allmächtigen Protagonisten Dupin unweigerlich geistig unterlegen. Eben dieser besticht dazu noch durch seine fast schon narzisstische Arroganz, die ihn zwar einerseits zu einer faszinierenden literarischen Figur macht, andererseits aber nicht unbedingt Sympathien in jedem Leser weckt. Zudem erscheinen viele Ereignisse und Situationen zu zufällig, gar verdächtig. Einige Autoren sind sogar der Meinung, Poe führe den Leser mit seinen Dupin-Geschichten gründlich an der Nase herum. Sie gehen sogar so weit zu behaupten, Dupin sei nicht nur einfach der harmlose Detektiv der Geschichten, sondern der wahre Täter und ein Mittel Poes, um als Leser auf unsere Leichtgläubigkeit aufmerksam zu machen. Diesen Thesen soll in der nachfolgenden Arbeit nachgegangen werden. Es soll gezeigt werden, an welcher Stelle die Vermutungen und Verdächtigungen begründet sind und an welcher nicht. [...]
