Janet Fletcher is the author or co-author of more than 20 books on food and wine, including Cheese & Wine (more than 80,000 copies sold);The Cheese Course; and Eating Local. She writes a weekly cheese column for the San Francisco Chronicle and is a former staff food writer for the Chronicle whose journalism earned three James Beard Awards and the IACP Bert Greene Award. Her food writing has appeared in numerous national consumer magazines, including Saveur, Bon Appétit, Better Homes & Gardens and Food & Wine, and her bimonthly cheese column for Specialty Food reaches a trade audience. Skews Towards the Easy-to-Find

As far as I know, this is the only recent book that has paired two of my favorite indulgences, clearly noted in the book's title (yes, cheese and beer).

The book has clear descriptions of several kinds of cheese and beer, and gives top-to-bottom instructions on how to get the most out of your purchases (from how to save and store cheese and beer, to how to serve both - what temperature and under what conditions - to get optimum flavor). I found the instructions on storing cheese especially informative; my girlfriend and I frequently buy a few varieties at a time and only consume a fraction of each. Fletcher's advice on storing has helped ensure that the other half is still fresh when we come back to it.

Having said that, the book just isn't as great as I'd hoped. First, the book is far from encyclopedic. It covers most of the bases of cheese and beer, but if you're looking for a comprehensive guide with tasting notes and pairing ideas for a variety of cheese and beer, look elsewhere (or start making your own- I'd be glad to help, er... research).

However, the real knock against this book is that it really skews towards the easy-to-find in terms of both cheese and beer. This may be intentional (no one wants a list of products you can't find anywhere), but it means that the pairing options are really middle of the road. The beers skew first towards Belgians, and additionally towards Californian craft beer. I love Belgian beer, and California has some amazing breweries, but it feels to me like someone is giving instructions on how to shop at a central coast Whole Foods instead of giving the variety of options that are available at a rapidly growing number of stores. And that's the biggest shame.

For a book published so recently, the beers listed feel dated already, and that's a shame because I wanted this book to be featured prominently on my shelf for years.

An Extremely Approachable and Useful Guide

Devotees of craft beers will undoubtedly love this well organized, succinctly written and lavishly illustrated guide since it focuses on the subject of beer and cheese pairings, but anyone who enjoys the challenges of experimenting with taste will find it rewarding.

Wine and cheese are often erroneously thought of as natural companions. In fact, only a limited number of the myriad possible wine and cheese combinations make great pairings. They are simply such outstanding exceptions to the rule that they obscure the fact that, in general, the vibrant flavors and creamy consistency of most cheeses interfere with the ability to taste the subtle flavors in a great wine. (They can also mask the flaws in lesser wines, however, which can make them useful in another way.) Beer and cheese, on the other hand, are more natural companions because the carbonation in the beer helps to refresh a palate by scrubbing away the creamy residue of the cheese and prepare it for the next bite.

Craft beers, with their pronounced flavors, provide more opportunities for outstanding matches than their blander mass market counterparts. But there is also more risk of a jarring mismatch, so it's helpful to understand the factors that make some combinations work and others fail. Janet Fletcher, cheese columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle and a prolific author and coauthor of many books on food, wine and sustainable living (including a companion book on pairing cheeses with wine), is an ideal guide. In this lively and eminently readable book, she gives us the tools to make good everyday pairings and find the surprising and extraordinary matches that make experimenting worthwhile.

Fletcher describes many proven pairings, but her objective is not simply to catalog these consensus match-ups. Rather, as she states in the introduction, it is to "equip you to continue the journey on your own" so that everyday brings the possibility of a new discovery. The benefit of this is underscored by sound advice she passes on from Adam Dulye, the proprietor of several popular San Fransisco gastropubs: "Do not miss your own taste experience by trying to find someone else's...what you taste, smell and feel is unique to you."

In making the effort to help her readers learn how to discover great tastes for themselves, Fletcher moves beyond the typical pairing guides that simply consist of a list of recommendations by the author or from experts that the author has reached out to. To enable her readers to find their own pairing experiences, she makes a special effort to familiarize them with the characteristic tastes of various styles of beer, so that (to the extent possible in a dynamic and creative environment) they will be able to predict what they'll taste like. As a preliminary step, she identifies seven taste characteristics common to beers and provides four "guidelines" for beer and cheese pairings, described as "suggestions, not rules". She acknowledges that there are many happy marriages that defy expectations, but understands that her readers will be more likely to discover these happy marriages if they are looking in the right places and understand the dynamics at play than if they simply try combinations at random. Fletcher also recognizes that it's important to understand how to store and serve cheeses and beers, so a perfectly good match isn't ruined by an easily avoided mistake. In this regard, she is not obsessive. Her advice is pragmatic and succinct and her suggestions explained with the kind of good sense that makes them easy to remember.

She follows this brief introduction with detailed descriptions of sixteen styles of ales and five styles of lagers. Together with the lavish photographs that fill the pages, her evocative descriptions make it difficult to sit still long enough to read them. It's definitely a good idea to plan ahead and stock some examples of the beers and cheeses you'll be reading about so that you'll have them on hand.

At the end of the book she provides a handy two page summary chart that gives specific suggestions for cheese and wine pairings according to the style of cheeses. Copying these two pages will save you the trouble of carrying the book with you as you begin your forays into cheese and beer pairings, but as you become more and more familiar with the experience of making good matches, the need for this will disappear and Fletcher will have achieved her primary goal in writing the book, giving you the tools to think before you drink, so you can enjoy it better.

A bit shorter than I expected.

I was expecting something longer and more technical and at first found it's brevity disappointing, but I soon found it to be advantageous. This book is perfect for a quick reference to pair a delicious cheese with whatever beer style you might have in your fridge. Each chapter is about a page or two long and gives a quick run down on the beer style, a list of examples, a brief explanation of what cheeses go well with this beer style and why, and some examples of cheeses to try.

At first I wanted to rate this 4 stars, which I feel it deserves if read alone. To get the full 5 star rating it is essential to find a local cheese specialty shop and talk with them about the base knowledge you gained from the book to further experiment with combinations.

Genuinely Scary Stories from the Beginning of the 20th Century

Read these three novellas back to back and you'll be looking over your shoulder before you even close the book. Algernon Blackwood is often regarded as one of the premiere writers of supernatural fiction and this book displays three of his very best. The classic "The Willows" finds two men canoing down the Rhine (which itself becomes a character through Blackwood's brilliant descriptive writing of a river that is both lovely and menacing)and camping on a tiny sand island that is covered in willows ... and inhabited by something else. What makes this story so rich and scary is Blackwood's blend of convincing characterisation, possible psychological explanations of all the goings on, and the almost unbearable build-up to the story's end. While "The Wendigo" doesn't hit quite as many nails on the head, it is also an effective story of a hunting party in the little-reached Canadian wilderness that ends with a face-to-face with the supernatural. In some ways, Blackwood has a lot of Jack London in him ... the supernatural is always the primary concern, but these men have to wrestle some nature, too. And so, if you go on and decide to do this book in one sitting (as I did) you come to "The Listener" which probably creeped me out the most (I don't hunt or canoe ...). A man takes an apartment in a bleak part of London and soon finds he's not the only one taking the apartment. This story plays upon every fear you have when you are alone in a house and begin suspecting you are not alone. Blackwood once again begins at a leisurely (but always compelling) pace and build the tension into a satisfying end. Each story by itself is terrific, but when done together in one whirlwind Thanksgiving day sitting ... well, the turkey isn't the only one losing his head.

Don't Go In the Woods and Read the Fine Print

Last summer I bought a huge book of classic ghost stories and one of the stories was Algernon Blackwood's classic camp horror tale "The Wendigo" who's title character has always inspired an absolute fear out of this reader. I don't know but a demonic spirit possessing a loved one to look at you as if you're the next Hot Plate Special doesn't sit too well with me. And being set in the bleak, snowy days of winter in upper Canada added a genuine chilling effect as I began to picture blood on the snow. Needless to say, I devoured the story in one sitting and became a fan of Ole Al Blackwood.

Fast forward to last week when I picked up this copy at the same store for only $3 and I was in a fit to read the other two tales. I was not disappointed.

In "The Willows" two men on a canoeing trip down the Danube River find that the brush covered island they pitch camp on contains a malevolent force bent on making the men very sorry they didn't haul ass out of there as soon as they could.

In "The Wendigo", a hunting party in Northern Canada crosses paths with the cannibalistic spirit of Native American legend which, needless to say, puts a big damper on their Male Bonding trek.

And in the last tale "The Listener", a writer rents a room in a boarding house only to discover that a lost spirit of one of the former tenants is trying to rent out his mind and body.

Each story is rich in detail, complexed in nature, and pretty much set the template that made Stephen King famous by setting ordinary people in frightening, inexplicable situations. The pace each story has is rather slow but the tension grows as you get deeper and deeper into the story though in the beginning I could feel a creeping lethargy come over me and causing me to have to reread a few passages. Overall, though, I was really pleased with this book. Now if only a decent movie could be made from one or all three of these now classic examples of horror fiction.

I originally purchased this book for the Wendigo short story. I remember reading it years ago and enjoying it immensely.However The Willows caught me by surprise. I think it was actually a better tale with much more imagination and suspense.The mood Mr. Blackwood creates is very much in the spirit of H.P. Lovecraft. The listener written in diary form is a classic ghost story which I am not ashamed to admit gave me goose bumps and had me looking over my shoulders at times every time I heard a bump in the night. I would highly recommend this collection of three short stories to anyone who is a fan of classic horror.

This is an excellent, detailed book defining the emergence of the concept of the biological citizen and the way in which this has reshaped the state and victims of Chernobyl. Highly recommended if you are interested in the way in which the concept of the body changes with situations.

This book was not written with a broad public in mind, and it's a shame, because if the ideas were a *little* bit more accessible, it might have been a real sensation. As it stands now, this is an academic discussion for students of organizational medicine who likely will work in research or in government; it explores how various affected populations have interacted with the Chernobyl disaster, and how various government agencies from different (soviet and post-soviet) ideological backgrounds have attempted to address the literal fallout. Deeply engaging, but not a quick or lesiurely read.

‘In seeking to understand death, we are seeking to understand life.’

Bianca Nogrady, an accomplished science journalist, began this book partly as a quest to try to find answers she had to some questions about her grandmother’s experience of death. Ms Nogrady’s investigation has led her to investigate culture, ethics, history, medicine, philosophy and science. Her assumption is that the more we know about death and the process of dying, the less we will have to fear from it. The question ‘Why do we have to die?’ is one which Ms Nogrady sees as having two parts: ‘Why can’t we live forever?’ and ‘Why don’t we live forever?’

‘It would be easy if we could pinpoint a single, universal moment that delineates the point of transition between life and death, but the reality is quite the opposite.’

The book examines some of the myths associated with popular ideas about death, includes some accounts from those who returned from the brink of death, and notes that there can be no firsthand experience of death. One of the big challenges is defining death, which Ms Nogrady illustrates by recounting the ancient parable of how six blind men each have different experiences of their encounter with an elephant. One elephant, six very different experiences. Medical advances, especially in the field of intensive care, over the past one hundred and fifty years have complicated the business of dying by altering the parameters seen as defining life. Death is better described as a process than as an event.

Ms Nogrady explains complex processes (such as whole brain death versus brain stem death, and the importance of each) clearly. The issues around defining death now have a medico-legal significance that can complicate an individual’s choices and preferences immeasurably.

Thinking about death is, for many of us, difficult. We have our own notions about what constitutes ‘a good death’, our own beliefs about what will happen afterwards. In this book, Ms Nogrady explores our understanding of death from a number of different aspects, including opinions from medical experts, from those who have survived near-death experiences, from those who counsel and support the dying and their families. It’s a well written book which provides both a lot of worthwhile information and plenty of food for thought. I’m glad I read it.

all I wanted to know but was afraid to ask

Lots of information on a topic usually shied away from by most of us. Death is part of life and we need to prepare to deal with it - for facing the loss of family and friends and making the most of our own death if we are able to.

Gets you thinking about The End

No matter how healthy we are, the truth is we all have a use by date. Bianca challenges us to confront dying the same way we plan for the birth of children. There are a number of things we should think about, from planning a will, thinking about what happen to us emotionally when we face our final hours, and what happens to us as we die. The question of when someone is dead is an especially thorny one.

It covers a great range of topics, although the last section on spirituality focus more on the Christian and Buddhist aspects. For a general book that's understandable. My only other criticism is that it can be a little choppy in parts, but you get used to this fairly quickly.

Overall, a great easy read and well worth a read whether you're facing 'The End' or not.

Der Gesamtgruppe der Entwicklungsländer räumt die EU in Konformität mit den WTO-Verträgen, die eine Sonderbehandlung von Entwicklungsländern legitimieren, besondere Marktzugangsbedingungen ein. Diese besonderen Marktzugangsbedingungen werden in dem sogenannten Allgemeinen Präferenzsystem (APS) evident. Den Least Developed Countries (LDC), also den ärmsten Ländern der Erde, werden im Rahmen der „Everything-but-arms-Initiative“ (EBA) weitergehende Präferenzen in Form von zoll- und quotenfreiem Zugang zu den Märkten der EU gewährt (vgl. Valqi, 2005, S.7). Ausgenommen von der EBA-Initiative sind die Agrarprodukte Bananen, Reis und Zucker, denen allerdings bis zum Jahr 2009 spätestens zoll-und quotenfreier Marktzugang gewährt werden soll (vgl. McQueen, 2002, S.101-102). Entwicklungshistorisch durch die koloniale Vergangenheit einiger europäischer Staaten erklärbar, hat die EU darüber hinaus ein spezielles Präferenzsystem für 78 Staaten Afrikas, der Karibik und des pazifischen Raums (AKP) geschaffen. Die AKP-Staatengruppe setzt sich sowohl aus Entwicklungsländern als auch aus LDCs zusammen. Dieses spezielle Präferenzsystem sieht handelsvertraglich eine bevorzugte Behandlung der AKP-Staaten im Vergleich zu der Gesamtgruppe der Entwicklungsländer vor. Jedoch sind die Präferenzen der AKP-Staaten weniger weitgehend als diejenigen unter der EBA-Initiative für die LDCs (vgl. Valqi, 2005, S.7). Diese von der EU gewährten nicht-reziproken Handelspräferenzen für AKP-Staaten verstoßen gegen geltendes WTO-Recht (vgl. Meyn, 2005a, S.12). Das zwischen der EU und den AKP-Staaten im Jahr 2000 ausgehandelte Cotonou-Abkommen musste also die Handelsbeziehungen zwischen der EU und den AKP-Staaten auf eine neue, mit dem WTO-Recht konforme Grundlage stellen. Hinzu kommt, dass die Vorläufer des Cotonou Abkommens (Lomé 1-4) entwicklungspolitisch keine Impulse setzen konnten. In dem Zeitraum 1975-2000 hat sich der Anteil der Exporte aus den AKP-Staaten an den Einfuhren in die EU etwa halbiert (vgl. Meyn, 2005a, S.11). Noch immer dominieren Primärgüter und Rohstoffe das Exportportfolio der AKP-Staaten und auch die sogenannten supply-side constraints, also interne Entwicklungshindernisse, konnten durch die Vorläufer des Cotonou Abkommens nicht beseitigt werden.
