An old classic on police tactics.

Many police officers collect old law enforcement material. As a former police trainer I collect books dealing with police defensive tactics. This text was originally published in 1930. The author was an internationally famous Jiu-jitsu instructor at that time. He developed a basic Jiu-jitsu course for law enforcement officers in the 1930s, and the same course was also taught to the FBI, as well as to members of the U.S. Navy, Marines and U.S. Army. Though this book is only 56 pages long, it contains over 40 techniques. The photos are old and not very clear, but you can still understand the techniques by reading the captions. Some of the techniques and do not show enough detail; nevertheless, many of the techniques demonstrated are just as valid today as they were in 1930. In conclusion, if you are into the history of police tactics and self-defense, you will want this small volume in your personal collection.

Fascinating Insight into Police Methods of the 1930's

"American Police Jiu Jitsu" was written to give an officer or average citizen tools to defend themselves. It is interesting to note that the end of this book has an advertisement for another text titled "Thirty Six Secret Knock Out Blows Without the Use of Fists." While largely drawn from the charts in Kano's Judo and Jiu Jitsu (available in a Dover reprint), atemi-waza and pressure-point strikes were common knowledge in the US Martial arts community in the 1930's. Jorgensen includes a section on artificial respiration (the back-lift method) and a page on how to check arterial bleeding.

The techniques rely on arcs, interceptions of the weapon hand with body avoidance movement and spiral defense movements that control the opponent's limbs, head and torso. Certainly this is not a complete self-defense system, but could serve as the core for such a course, especially if supplemented with the author's book on atemi-waza.

Amédée Maingard was a young Mauritian studying in London in 1939 who volunteered for the British Army. After a frustrating spell in the infantry, Maingard joining the Special Operations Executive (SOE) and later had a successful career as a leader and peace keeper in France and later Mauritius.

Maingard returned to Mauritius and was instrumental in developing the island’s tourism and hotel industry. Founder and first Chairman of Air Mauritius, he became one of his country’s most successful postwar businessmen before illness cut short his ambition and he died in 1981 at the age of 62.

Detailed, Informative, Well-Written

When delving into a study of WWII Resistance, one can be overwhelmed with not only the courage of those who stood up to Fascism but also with the fact that hundreds of thousands of WWII heroes have died in obscurity without leaving any record. And so reading a book like "Behind Enemy Lines with the SAS," which brings the story of Amédée Maingard to light, gives some real satisfaction on that score.

Born in the French-speaking British colony, Mauritius, Maingard was studying in London when WWII broke out. He volunteered for the British Army but was soon recruited for the French Section of the Special Operations Executive (SOE), the British wartime resistance organization. Before reading this book, I knew only that Maingard was a radio operator for the SOE's Stationer network, someone who fellow-SOE agent Pearl Witherington, in her memoir, deemed "a gentleman," but McCue's book reveals that Maingard's SOE work was more involved: he was also an organizer for the network and after D-Day he worked closely with the Special Air Services (SAS).

As comfortable with French civilian fighters as he was with British officers (and able to fluently converse with both), Maingard organized and implemented successful Resistance work on many levels and with many different types of people. His sense of fairness was so intense that in the midst of a post-war celebratory dinner speech wherein a French speaker publicly praised de Gaulle, Roosevelt, and Stalin (really!) and failed to mention the names of King George and Churchill, Maingard got up and left the room.

McCue is very keen on getting all the operational details of Maingard's work with the Stationer Network and the SAS's Operation Bulbasket and the book would be slightly difficult to break into if one did not already have a foundational understanding of the British role in the French Resistance. But that doesn't mean the writing is dull -- far from it. While reading a section on a vengeance raid the RAF conducted on an SS camp in occupied France, I could actually feel my pulse quickening as I wondered what the outcome would be. And scattered throughout the book, but especially found in its second half, are quotes from various witnesses involved in the events described and this testimony makes the already-compelling story come to life.

As nearly all books on SOE agents very thrilling. A lot of thanks to the author!! Such awesome people, such agents..... I take pride in having met some, of the Czech section of course. Of the entire lot of those having been dropped behind the lines in our country just one is still alive(Mr Klemeš of "Platinum-Pewter"). As the French say: "Chapeau!"

An excellent read, well researched and well-written

This year I've been reading bio's of SOE agents. This is one of the better ones. The history is well researched, The writing is perfect for the subject, and Amedee had a really exciting time in occupied France. So it adds up to SOE buffs like me.

Entertaining and suspenseful but unbelievable...

I don't know how The Partner by John Grisham has escaped me for so long as this is one of his earlier books. It has the action packed, conspiracy laden plot that we have come to expect from him. I read this 480 page book in less than 24 hours. While it was entertaining and suspenseful, I knew it was impossible for one character to have everything figured out.

Patrick Lanigan is a partner in a law firm in Biloxi Mississippi when he is killed in a fiery car crash. He is burned beyond recognition, and his remains are cremated and then buried. But when several weeks later, 90 million dollars goes missing from his law firm, Patrick becomes the chief suspect. Four and a half years later, Patrick is discovered living in Brazil, and is captured and tortured by some disreputable characters who are working on behalf of the companies that were bilked of their millions, including two insurance companies. Patrick does have the money, although he doesn't know the exact location of it. But he also knows a terribly powerful secret that can bring many people crashing down if the information was to be made public. The Partner becomes a literary game of chess as Patrick uses this information while bargaining with the FBI, the Justice Department and Harrison County Law Enforcement.

But while The Partner is entertaining, it is totally unbelievable. First, Lanihan has managed the almost perfect crime, and there are just too many coincidences to be realistic. He becomes an expert at disappearing, becomes proficient in a new language, masters electronic surveillance, tackles offshore banking, learns to hide money, creates gasoline bombs, and a host of other skills. I'm not sure that Lanigan was even likable, and when the book ended with a shocker, I wasn't sure if I was glad or sad for Patrick. In fact, there weren't a whole lot of likable characters in The Partner, except for maybe Sandy McDermott, who was Lanigan's college friend and served as his lawyer.

So if you're looking for something with lots of action and some twists and turns, The Partner is vintage Grisham. But don't expect it to be believable. It's more a light, summer beach book than a work of great literature.

A fun legal thriller; refreshing change of storytelling style for Grisham

I thoroughly enjoyed the intricacies and twists in Patrick Lanigan's master plot to rip off his crooked law firm of enough money to be set for life. As someone who had gotten tired of Grisham's plot technique of using a super-powerful all-knowing company or firm who could track our hero to the ends of the earth and ruin in his life, this was a refreshing change. Quite the opposite was true-those seeking Lanigan were perilously close to running out of money for the effort. Also, the painstaking methods for tracking Lanigan's whereabouts were spelled out entirely for the reader, silencing even the most doubtful reader. In many of Grisham's other books, he shirks on the plot-building duties and just tosses out a super-sleuth team that can find anyone anywhere with no explanation.

I enjoyed the non-linear storytelling style: the book opened with Lanigan being found by his pursuers, and then the backstory of how and why he stole the money, and how he hid from his pursuers, is filled in. For most of the book, Lanigan looks like a "bad guy" himself, in fact. It was a nice change-up on the way the plot was laid out.

Many have complained about the end of the book. I enjoyed the journey enough to trust Grisham with the end. I'll leave all readers to make up their own mind about Lanigan's fate.

Scheming and Suspenseful

Patrick Lanigan was a young lawyer who had recently become a partner in a propsperous law firm. Feeling a sense of hopelessness in his life, he plotted for months on how he would disappear and start a new life in a foreign country. He learned about a scheme in which his law firm would earn $90 million dollars for their client. Patrick obtained a new identity and stole the money. He started a new life in Brazil with a beautiful young woman, but was always looking over his shoulder. Four years later, he was found and tortured. He was brought back to the US and treated at a hospital while under arrest. He took that time to create an impecable defense for himself and eventually all charges were dropped and he went back to Brazil with $30 million dollars to live happily ever after. But he didn't... I would strongly recommend this book to anyone looking for an intriguing story that is a fast read. I loved the character of Patrick Lanigan, with his attention to detail and the remarkable tactics he used to win his case. I did not enjoy the ending, however, because it left you with a sense of disappointment and wonder. It was still an entertaining book that I couldn't wait to finish.
