Originally published in Germany as a seven-volume series, Berlin Gothic (appearing here as a two-parter) tells the story of Inspector Konstantin Butz, whose investigation into a series of murder-mutilations leads him to question whether his lover, Claire Bentheim, might know a lot more about the killings than he could possibly have suspected. Butz’s story is alternated with that of young Till Anschutz, who, 12 years earlier, is adopted into the Bentheim household, in which he discovers that Xavier Bentheim, his adoptive father, is a horror novelist who is hiding some truly horrific secrets. Richly detailed and populated by characters who breathe remarkable life into the story, the book ends not with a cliffhanger but with an abrupt stop, leaving readers with no option but to wait for the second volume to see how Winner brings this thrilling, terrifying story to a conclusion (8/1/2013).

Berlin Gothic will definitely be one of those sagas that make some thrillseekers salivate. Definitely not a bookfor the faint of heart, this begins a series that sets its sights onbeing chilling, horrific, and unique.
Inspector Konstantin Butz is knee-deep in a series of murders that are complete and utter mutilations. The most difficult part for him in this investigation is the fact that he’s beginning to suspect the love of his life, Claire Bentheim, may know something about the brutal killings.
The Inspector’s story runs parallel with another. Till Anschultz is an orphan on the run, and is adopted into Claire Bentheim’s family living in Berlin. Forming a bond with Max, the twelve-year-old son of the Bentheim’s, Till and Max act like the boys they are and choose to live adventurously.
Both of them are interested in exploring the office of Xavier Bentheim, Max’s father. Xavier is an odd man, to say the least. But that’s not really a surprise because he lives his life as a writer of horror. When the boys get up the nerve to delve into the office, they find themselves scared silly by what they discover hidden behind a secret door. And the two stories become interwoven in a way that will have readers
thinking about Stephen King at his most unusual.
To tell what the frightening treasure is would be a huge spoiler; readers definitely deserve to see the real thing. Detailed with characters that are both fascinating andhorrifying, the Berlin Gothic series will take its place in the category of horror, not suspense. And because of the great writing, it may just find itself on top of the American list of favorite fearful tales. Suggestion? Make sure you can handle some truly terrifying narrative and read on. About the Author
Born in Berlin in 1966, Jonas Winner lived in Rome and the United States before moving back to his home city to study philosophy. As a reporter and television editor, he shot documentaries and covered cultural affairs. His experience informed his work on screenplays, and several of his detective stories and thrillers have aired throughout Europe. He released his debut novel in 2011, followed by the seven-part Berlin Gothic series, which became one of Germany’s first e-book bestsellers. Winner lives and writes in Berlin.

Berlin Gothic: Book One

Berlin Gothic was released as a seven-part serial in Germany. In translation, it has been divided into two parts, of which The Beginning is the first.
For reasons that are initially murky, young Till Anschütz runs away from a mysterious place called Brackenfelde. A car driven by Julia Bentheim strikes him, but Till resists being taken to a hospital for fear that he'll be returned to Brackenfelde. Julia takes him home, where Till meets her son Max and daughters Lisa and Claire. Max lives in fear of his inability to meet the expectations of Xavier, his domineering father, a writer whose books are so horrifying he can't talk about them with his children. In some unspecified way, Xavier is in the clutches of his wealthy new publisher, Felix von Quitzow.
A dozen years later, a dying woman is found in a pit at a construction site, the victim of an apparent crime. Konstantin Butz investigates. While Butz is exploring a shaft in the pit, he thinks he sees ... something ... before the walls collapse, burying him beneath the muddy earth.
The two timelines are linked by Claire, who has become Butz' girlfriend. Yet Claire is a conflicted woman, inexplicably drawn to a boxer named Frederik, who seems obsessed with her.
Where will the story go? I haven't a clue, which makes The Beginning interesting but difficult to review. Maybe it will go nowhere. Maybe it will be great. What I can say about The Beginning is that it's a good beginning. Jonas Winner generates genuine tension, a sense of foreboding that pervades both plot threads. He creates a strong atmosphere of creepiness and he writes fast-moving, minimalist prose. If nothing else, The Beginning makes me look forward to the ending.

Bummer

This is the first review I have written, but I feel strongly enough about this book to write it in hopes of saving others.
It was difficult getting into this book, but I persisted and was paid off by getting involved in the mystery only to be disappointed ultimately. The book closes with a tangle of lose ends and no closure/resolution on anything or rationale for most things. And there are going to be 7 or 8 more?!?
Among the many individual downers in the book: horrific scenes of torture and animal abuse and jumping back and forth in time and between writing styles/genres.
I got the book at very reduced price (free?), but trust me, it was too much.
BTW--one star, the price of getting this posted, is too high.

Unyielding Horror (with a Side of Berlin Shaming)!

The first in the Berlin Gothic series is a very auspicious beginning indeed; it actually merits the definite article. ;)
I couldn't put it down. This is real horror, not just a thriller, and I found Jonas Winner's plot to be completely original.
What I found really striking was the sense of immediacy conveyed by Winner's prose. I felt like I was right in the action -- I guess that's normally true with books for fairly imaginative readers. If I had to pinpoint the difference I'd say I didn't find myself looking into my memory to fit what was happening into what already had transpired, and I was too absorbed to hazard guesses about what was to come next.
Again, horror fans, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
One negative note: Can Berlin please get a break? Winner shamelessly excoriates the city as more or less the worst place ever on the first page. It's not like the place is underrated for its connections to the darker side of human nature...it would be nice to set the horror someplace more counterintuitive. I felt too drawn into some German guilt performance, but then again, what do I, the American reader, know about that?
