About the Author
Robert B. Banks (1922-2002) was Professor of Engineering at Northwestern University and Dean of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He served with the Ford Foundation in Mexico City and with the Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok. He won numerous national and international honors, including being named Commander of the Order of the White Elephant by the King of Thailand and Commandeur dans l'Ordre des Palmes Academiques by the government of France. He is the author of Slicing Pizzas, Racing Turtles, and Further Adventures in Applied Mathematics (Princeton).

Applied mathematics to a wide range of events and phenomena. This is a lot of fun to read and to stimulate the interest in the subject both to the young reader and to the adult.

A Supplement to a Mathematics for Physicists/Scientists College Course

While the content is interesting, it tends to be too detailed, way too many equations, and lacking in explanations of how the equations morph into meaningful numerical results. For example, more explanation should go to why a smooth ball has more drag than a dimpled one, rather than just saying the coefficient of friction differs between the two types of ball. I intend to finish the book real soon, but have other things to read...
