In these three volumes, author Siracusa offers a wealth of information about the thirty-fifth president of the U.S. and his family, judiciously guiding users through the tumultuous world of the 1960s, the civil rights movement, and Cold War containment. The volumes are prefaced by an edifying introductory essay that provides contextual grounding and a brief annotated chronology. The alphabetically arranged entries range from Ralph Abernathy to Eugene Zuckert and include important people (Dean Acheson, Fidel Castro, Marilyn Monroe, and Arthur Schlesinger Jr.); related events and legislation (American Indian movement, Cuban missile crisis); and relevant concepts (Cold War, Democratic Party, New Left, and Space program). Each entry is comprised of solidly written, readable prose and includes connected see also terms as well as a brief bibliography for further reading. Rounding out the volumes is a collection of 15 pertinent, full-text primary documents, including the Kennedy-Nixon presidential debates, Kennedy’s inaugural address, and Kennedy’s memorable Rudolph Wilde Platz speech, in West Berlin, in which he proudly proclaimed, “Ich bin ein Berliner.” The handful of black-and-white images scattered throughout the volumes break up what is otherwise a text-heavy layout.
