Dementsprechend viel hat man sich bisher damit beschäftigt. Von Thukydides über Cicero bis in die heutige wissenschaftliche Forschung setzen sich die Historiker, und nicht nur diese, mit Herodot auseinander. Einer der größten Kontroversen war und ist dabei die Frage, in wie weit Herodot als Historiker bezeichnet werden darf. Thukydides reiht Herodot in die Reihe der Logographen ein und beschuldigt ihn, ohne seinen Namen ausdrücklich zu nennen, er hätte sich nur auf das Hörensagen verlassen und sich nicht um die Wahrheit bemüht. Als Beispiel widerlegt er zwei Textpassagen aus Herodots Werk.
Cicero nennt Herodot „patrem historiae, sunt innumerabiles fabulae“, also den Vater der Geschichtsschreibung und Erzähler zahlreicher Märchen. Er bezweifelt damit auf der einen Seite die Authentizität zumindest mancher Geschichten, doch hält ihn dies nicht davon ab, Herodot als den Begründer der Geschichtsschreibung zu bezeichnen. In der neueren Forschung, eine intensive wissenschaftliche Beschäftigung mit Herodot beginnt mit Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts, wird immer noch darüber diskutiert, wie Herodots Historien zu bewerten sind und wie Herodot als Historiker zu bewerten ist. Die moderne Forschung setzt dabei ihren Schwerpunkt auf die Untersuchung der herodotischen Methode.
