Chr.) verlor aus nicht geklärten Gründen die Gunst des Ostgotenkönigs Theoderich und wurde wegen Hochverrats verurteilt und hingerichtet. Während der Zeit seiner Inhaftierung verfasste er die „consolatio philosophiae“. Anlass dafür war, dass er sich ungerecht behandelt fühlte. In seinem Werk, das einen fiktiven Dialog mit der Philosophie darstellt, beklagt er zunächst den Verlust seines früheren Glücks, um schließlich mithilfe der Klärung philosophischer Fragen Trost in seiner unglücklichen Lage zu finden.
Er lässt sich im Folgenden von der Philosophie über die Beschaffenheit des wahren Glücks (Buch II und III) aufklären, das darin bestehe, dass es im vollkommenen Guten, das bedeutet letztendlich in Gott, zu finden sei. Die Frage, die sich daraus entwickelt, nämlich warum Gott - das vollkommene Gute - das Schlechte zulässt und warum gerade die Guten unter dem Schlechten leiden müssen - wie er selbst -, wird im Buch IV erörtert (Theodizee). Nachdem die Philosophie festgestellt hat, dass diese Ungerechtigkeit nur eine scheinbare ist, und Boethius nach „weiterer Belehrung über die Ursachen des scheinbaren Unglücks der Guten“ verlangt, erfährt er, „dass das gestellte Problem eine ganze Reihe der schwierigsten Dinge in sich schließe. Fünf Punkte werden ausdrücklich aufgeführt: erstens dieVorsehung,zweitens dieVerkettung des Schicksals,drittens derZufall,viertens dasVorauswissen Gottesund fünftens dieFreiheit der menschlichen Entscheidung.“(S. 357). Während die ersten zwei dieser Probleme -VorsehungundSchicksal- im Buch IV geklärt werden, werden die weiteren drei Probleme im Buch V behandelt,Kontingenz,die Zufälligkeit in Hinsicht auf eine übergeordnete schicksalhafte Notwendigkeit,Vorauswissen Gottesund dieFreiheit der menschlichen Entscheidung.
