About the Author
Charles Darwin, a Victorian scientist and naturalist, has become one of the most famous figures of science to date. Born in 1809 to an upper-middle-class medical family, he was destined for a career in either medicine or the Anglican Church. However, he never completed his medical education and his future changed entirely in 1831 when he joined HMS Beagle as a self-financing, independent naturalist. On returning to England in 1836 he began to write up his theories and observations which culminated in a series of books, most famously On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection in 1859, where he challenged and contradicted contemporary biological and religious beliefs with two decades worth of scientific investigation and theory. Darwin's theory of natural selection is now the most widely accepted scientific model of how species evolve. He died in 1882 and was buried in Westminster Abbey. Damien Hirst is an internationally renowned English artist, who has dominated the art scene in England since the 1990s. Known in particular for his series of works on death, Hirst here provides a contemporary, visual take on Darwin's theory of evolution - the struggle between life and death in nature. William Bynum is Professor Emeritus of the History of Medicine at University College, London, and was for many years Head of the Academic Unit of the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine. He edited the scholarly journal Medical History from 1980 to 2001, and his previous publications include Science and the Practice of Medicine in the Nineteenth Century; The Companion Encyclopedia of the History of Medicine (co-edited with Roy Porter); The Oxford Dictionary of Scientific Quotations (with Roy Porter), The Dictionary of Medical Biography (with Helen Bynum), and History of Medicine: A Very Short Introduction. Struggle for Existence

Nothing is easier than to admit in words the truth of the universal struggle for life, or more difficult - at least I have found it so - than constantly to bear this conclusion in mind. Yet unless it be thoroughly engrained in the mind, I am convinced that the whole economy of nature, with every fact on distribution, rarity, abundance, extinction, and variation, will be dimly seen or quite misunderstood. We behold the face of nature bright with gladness, we often see superabundance of food; we do not see, or we forget, that the birds which are idly singing round us mostly live on insects or seeds, and are thus constantly destroying life; or we forget how largely these songsters, or their eggs, or their nestlings, are destroyed by birds and beasts of prey; we do not always bear in mind, that though food may be now superabundant, it is not so at all seasons of each recurring year.

I should premise that I use the term Struggle for Existence in a large and metaphorical sense, including dependence of one being on another, and including (which is more important) not only the life of the individual, but success in leaving progeny. Two canine animals in a time of dearth, may be truly said to struggle with each other which shall get food and live.

Concise introduction to the heart of Darwin's theory

Many folks erroneously suppose Darwin invented the idea of Evolution, the descent with modification of modern organisms from previously existing forms. In fact, this idea was well established in scientific circles by the early 19th century. What was lacking was a natural, in place of a supernatural, explanation for the process.

Darwin provided this at length in the 14 chapters of his 1859 work, "On the Origin of Species," the heart of which is his theory of Natural Selection. If organisms within species vary (and we know they do), and if that variation tends to be inherited between generations (which Darwin saw but could not explain), and if that variation gives some organisms within species an advantage over others in survival and reproduction, then it follows that species will become modified over time in consequence of favorable variation being preserved and passed on. That's all.

Penguin has provided a very convenient extract of four key chapters, the third dealing with the "struggle for existence," the fourth putting forth in more detail the argument outlined here, the sixth dealing with the more obvious objections to the theory (then as now), and the last chapter summing up the work. Even non-biologist readers nowadays will accept the evidence of variation, and are far more familiar than Darwin with modern genetics to explain inheritance. It remains necessary to understand intraspecific struggle and competition (which are often metaphorical), and to drawn the conclusion of descent with modification, as Darwin does.

This is *the* Darwin book for the lay reader, who wishes to see what all the fuss is about. I have used this little book as recommended reading for philosophy courses on Darwinian theory, and for a public lecture to be given in honour of the publication of the "Origin" this coming November 19th. It is an extremely accessible introduction to Natural Selection in Darwin's own words, without the necessity of plowing through a great deal of Victorian persiflage.

Evolutionary classic

Written in 1859 by Charles Darwin to state his belief in natural selection, this book does not disappoint. Darwin clearly states his theory in this book of how nature naturally selects the strongest of a species to continue on the race. He explains the instruments of selection, sexual selecting through choice of mate, environmental and climate selection through ability to survive. He explains through charts of branches how a species could evolve and change over long time periods into a separate species. He does not back down from his critics on how an eye could evolve or why species appear to be created for their environment. I found this book to seem like a more modern read than its pre-American Civil War publishing date would suggest. After reading this little book I have a much better understanding of Darwin's theory of evolution and see how he began to turn modern science on its head by his creative and amazing theory which modern science now accepts as fact.

A founding work of modern thought

This proves, as if it needed proving, that the originators of profound ideas often given the clearest, most readable, and most complete discussions of their topics. Explainers often just muddy the issue, and most later researchers incrementally widen, fill in, and bolster the original points. If any intelligent reader wants to understand the mechanism, breadth, subtlety, and power of evolution, this is the place to start. If nothing else, Darwin gives clear statement (and rebuttal) to issues that biblical literalists still yammer about, including the time scale of speciation, the fragmentary nature of the fossil record, and the fallacy of 'irreducible complexity.'

"Slow though the process may be, ... I can see no limit ... to the beauty and infinite complexity of the coadaptations between all organic beings" Understanding doesn't dampen awe. Quite the opposite: truly appreciating the power of change and selection conveys a majestic sense of the world and our place in it that I can not express. And, although I'm not a theist, I can certainly see how the the limitless power of never-ending creation can be seen as a direct and present act of a limitless Creator.

Only a very few things will sound unfamiliar to the modern reader. The first is the absence of genetics, from Mendel to Watson and Crick. Darwin observed and described inheritance without any sharp statement of what was inherited - genetics provides the mortar between the stones of Darwin's edifice. Another is the creationist beliefs of his time: that each "species" was a distinct act of creation, and progenitor of the many extant subspecies and varieties. Yet another is his unwillingness to believe that "any part of the structure of any one species had been formed for the exclusive good of another species." Mutualistic coevolution is real: a flower's nectar is of no direct use to the flower, but serves the insects around it. In a wider sense, though, nectar indirectly benefits the flower by attracting pollinators, so the error may lie only in too tight an interpretation of "exclusive good."

This slim book has been edited down from a much longer work, and I do not know what was sacrificed to brevity. Still, it stands well by itself, and the short distance from front cover to back should appeal to people put off by thick books. I recommend this to every thinking reader, down to high school age or earlier.

The title of this fine book comes from the work of the 18th-century mystic Emanuel Swedenborg, who speculated that the spirits of two persons who have loved one another unite to become an angel. Drawing on Swedenborg's philosophy, Carl Jung's archetype theory and the work of Joseph Campbell, the Larsens use myths as vehicles for examining the dynamics of love and relationships. Their combined expertise renders them well qualified for this creative collaboration: they also co-wrote a biography of Joseph Campbell; Robin Larsen has edited a Swedenborg anthology, and Stephen Larsen is the author of The Shaman's Doorway and The Mythic Imagination. Here, they retell stories from the world's myths, discussing legendary figures and explicating their psychological symbolism, in a similar fashion to the volumes of Robert A. Johnson (He, She, and We). The Larsens' treatment is lengthier and broader than Johnson's, however, with the added element of transcribed discussions of their own and other couples' conversations about mythical themes. Such interpretations must by nature be subjective, so the book lacks the authority of laboratory proofs or case studies. But the stories make the book more interesting to read than abstract psychological theories, and readers with a bent toward communicating through story or with an interest in Jungian thought will find this approach fascinating. The fascinating results aren't abstract, however, for the Larsens draw on their own 35-year marriage to demonstrate how the various principles they discuss function in real life. Using mythology as a bridge between psychological and metaphysical realms, they delve into such topics as spiritual androgyny, soul mates, the effect of childhood abuse on adult relationships, the differences between biological gender and social stereotypes, marital fidelity, and the gender wars. They include a wide range of exercises for couples wishing to apply their understanding of the material to their own relationships. The Larsens combine mythology with their real-life anecdotes and transcriptions of dialogues between them to ensure that their densely written book doesn't become pedantic or difficult to read. Entertaining and enlightening as well as thought provoking, the book argues that the partners in relationships become mirrors for each other and demonstrates how men and women can come to understand each other and themselves much more deeply. A Lost Treasure

I have been bursting with excitement since I began reading this book. My wife and I are, ourselves, writing a book about love and relationship, have been steeped in the literature, and we have not found a more penetrating treatment of the topic. Written by Joseph Campbell's longtime friends and colleagues -- and Campbell's authorized biographers -- THE FASHIONING OF ANGELS illuminates every salient aspect of love with the wisdom of humanity's attempts to wrestle with love's paradoxes through mythic story. Its purview crosses cultures and time. But it does not stop there. Its commentary weaves these jewels of mythic wisdom into a rich tapestry that offers context and perspective for the reader's journey into deep relationship. Nor does it stop there. The authors build on the experience of their (at the time of writing the book) thirty-five years with one another in illustrating how the principles play out in a real-life complex and beautiful relationship, and they augment this with interviews with other couples whose partnerships -- based on wisdom or good fortune -- have taken a high road that makes them examples worthy of examination. Nor does it even stop there. The reader is given a set of practical exercises to illumine and deepen their their partnership in a way that bridges it into a self-aware spiritual journey. And now an amazing factoid: THE FASHIONING OF ANGELS was published in 2000 and this is its first Amazon review! The book is out of print! There is no way in my mind that this computes. Fortunately, it is available on Kindle and from re-sellers. It is not a light read, perhaps the reason it is not widely known, but it is a profound read, the kind that shifts your perspective forever.

Auch deshalb ist es notwendig, über das Wesen von Konflikten Bescheid zu wissen und einen offenen Umgang mit ihnen zu fördern.

Ziel dieser Studienarbeit ist es, das allgemeine Verständnis für Konflikte zwischen Individuen, insbesondere in Organisationen, zu fördern und Möglichkeiten zu einer erfolgsversprechenden Bewältigung aufzuzeigen. Hierbei wird unter anderem auf die Mediationsmethode eingegangen. About the Author
Martha L. Abell and James P. Braselton are graduates of the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Ohio State University, respectively, and teach at Georgia Southern University, Statesboro where they have extensive experience in Mathematica-assisted instruction at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition, they have given numerous presentations on Mathematica, throughout the United States and abroad. Other books by the authors include Differential Equations with Mathematica, Second Edition and Statistics with Mathematica. Martha became Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics at Georgia Southern University in 2014.

Works, but disappointing for number of errors - and only game in town

As a new Maple user, but a sophisticated software developer, I think the tutorial is better that comes with Maple. Going through that tutorial is faster, and it covers the same things as the book, but without errors.

It puzzles me why the package tutorial is only available for the old style Classic Worksheet. I suppose nobody bothered to convert it over? Why not? It's just a bit of stuff in plotting and some expanded stuff.

The book is OK, but I'll second what the teacher posted. Way too many errors. I was able to get past those errors faster than most would, because I treated it like a coding exercise, knowing what was likely to have been screwed up.

However, those errors highlighted something basic that I expected would be there in Maple. Why is it that a little highlighted popup parameter display doesn't show when you enter a recognized command? It's basic to things like Visual C++, Excel, etcetera. If that was present, then errors like this book has wouldn't matter much.

Similarly, I would expect a sophisticated tool like this to have automatic auto-complete with a popup dropdown list for multiple hits for any function that's loaded into the system. It's not like the names of things are easy to predict or not arbitrary. This is essentially a coding library with access to function names that people made up over the years. Some function names make lots of sense, others don't. So that should be better.

The book covers the ground. A 5 for coverage. But so does the tutorial seem to rate a 5 for coverage.

Another gripe is who on earth decided to print all those miniaturized screen shots that are so light? This really detracts from the book's quality and makes it seem cheap. At minimum, screen shots like that should be rendered in high contrast black and white.

This book is slipshod for a first edition. For a third edition, it's really not acceptable.

A Really Fast Way to Ascend the Maple Learning Curve

I'm new to Maple and wanted some help learning to
use version 12. This book does the job.
The most useful feature of the book (written for version 9)
is the cdrom which contains maple workspace files for
all of the code for all of the
examples in the book. The examples cover a wide range
of college math. The only things lacking for me
are examples of tensor and differential geometry
calculations possible in Maple version 12.
I'd love to see this book updated to cover all the
new features in Maple 12.

Kristine Kalanges is Assistant Professor of Justice, Law & Society in the School of Public Affairs at American University. She holds a JD from Yale Law School, where she was a John M. Olin Fellow in Law, Economics and Public Policy, and a PhD from Georgetown University, where she was a Graduate Fellow in International Relations. Previously, she practiced law in the New York office of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP and served in Washington, DC as a law clerk for the U.S. Department of Justice.

Legal and religious comparative analysis at its creative best while avoiding a polarizing methodology

The author demonstrates a profound and accurate knowledge of the historic, religious and cultural personages, contexts and developments which gave rise to both the Western and the Islamic legal traditions, particularly as such critical Sitz im Leben nudged each tradition first one way and then another. But, far from being a mere historical-cultural review, the author, rooted firmly in the tradition of eminent Catholic comparative scholarship, is not content merely to discuss "how we got here". Instead, building on a solid foundation of those scholars who came before her, she forges a new path forward not just to where we might go but where we must go as well as how to get there. As an attempt to construct a theoretical framework (first comes theory, then practice) of universal human rights in the context of the two major diverse and competing religious and legal traditions, this is a work that is not just interesting and impressive. It is at once both pedagogical and, I think, right-minded. It is historical, legal and religious comparative analysis at its creative best while avoiding a polarizing methodology! And it is clear that the author is on to something viable. The wise among us would do well to pay attention.

This is a wonderfully learned account for readers who want to get to ...

This is a wonderfully learned account for readers who want to get to the root of conflict between western and Islamic conceptions of religious freedom. So many analyses out there skim the surface of religious difference, making for poor insights and weak policy recommendations. This one, however, plumbs the depth of legal differences, finds their roots in religious concepts, and then suggests paths forward. Fantastic work and we'll worth the read.

A deep, affecting, and intensely vital inquiry into the forces of militant secularism, religious freedom, and the necessary binding of a christian tradition within the context of international jurisprudence to assert religious and socio-political integration in a globalized world. Society should never face a reality in which one is obliged to commit allegiance to a state at the cost of faith, or vice versa. Kalanges' inquiry is a telling success in answering the question: how do we commit toward a legal framework structured to support the common good and inherent human rights in an age dominated by both secular and religious militantism?

Tinkering with dams.

If you are interested in dams, this should interest you. It is one of the "Objekt" series. I found it to be interesting but the writing is not up to the usual standard of this series--a judgment call, of course. It also focuses a bit too much on the UK. The photos are good, but not so good as usual in the series. It is full of interesting information. There isn't so much on design and operation of dams.

The book is best, I think, on the Aswan dams on the Nile. There is also a chapter on challenges to dam-building projects. Turpin writes that with increasing concern about global warming, hydropower may make a comeback and so, more dams.

About the Author
Jennifer Maier's work has appeared in Poetry, American Poet, New Letters, and elsewhere and has been featured several times on NPR's The Writer's Almanac. Her debut collection, Dark Alphabet, was named one of "Ten Remarkable Books of 2006" by the Academy of American Poets and was a finalist for the 2006 Poets Prize. She works as a professor of modern literature and creative writing at Seattle Pacific University and serves as poetry editor of the arts quarterly IMAGE.

Jennifer Maier is hilarious. The imagination at work behind the poetry in her first collection, Dark Alphabet, is voracious and supple. It expands the world from the tiniest points into a universe bright and dark with meaning. It yields sly-eyed, delightful images that burn in the mind long after the poem is gone. And, as a bonus, her imagination tickles and teases with the agility of a truly consummate poet. On moving on from an old love: "Will April lay down her xylophone / and pick up the cello? / Or December go gravely in his mourning coat / without his white gloves, his diamond tiara?" And the poet's answer to a friend who asks why she is not a novelist: "although / I have combed the Gulf Coast towns / of my childhood, seeking the snowy egrets / of great short fiction, it is only the poetry birds / who land on me." Maier possesses the sort of wit that steals the familiar object out from under your nose, rendering it to you again, either inside out or in a different color, say, chartreuse. It's then, with a jolt of recognition, that you see what has been overlooked: the lake as a "murmuring woman" under the moon, like the woman oppressed by the memory of her drowned son but kept from falling through the earth by the atoms that "push back / bound in their electric need." Or the earnestness of the young undergraduate asking her professor if she believes in soul mates, her "eyes two sharpened spades / turning the loam of her future." These poems move nimbly between the commonplace and the resonant, fired by the poet's deep reverence for language and a fascination with the way our minds enter our own experience and that of others, often through unexpected doors: a hymn to a saint, a cherry cordial given to a child by a black-sheep uncle, the thread of a cashmere sweater winding through the lives of generations of women. Compassion, stripped of sentimentality, moves behind each word, giving flight to Maier's poetry birds that form "a dark alphabet against the sky."

The Music of Words

Let's cut through the usual academic hoo-ha and highfalutin, lit-crit code-talking. This collection, Maier's first, is just plain gorgeous. Packed with wit, burning with passion, personal as a late-night conversation, these elegantly crafted, far-ranging, accessible poems will make you laugh, ponder, catch your breath,and yes--cry, more than once (mind, this is an Alaskan ex-hunting guide talking). There's some sort of alchemy at work in Maier's poetic voice, something you can't quite put your finger on. But if you read these poems aloud, you'll hear it for yourself: the music of words, each one a perfectly tuned wind chime, ringing in the dusk.
