Was there conscious thought behind the creation and subsequent development of life-forms, or did they slowly grow and change, based on their environment and basic needs? A battleground has sprung up between these two points of view, and the question addressed in this book is, “What role do the media play in framing public opinion about these concepts?” Both intelligent design (ID) and evolution are explored in individual chapters. The development of each concept is looked at through detailing the history and basic beliefs of each. There is a chapter that outlines the actual debate and court cases that involve the public school system and the teaching of ID in science classes. Finally, the media framing of the case for ID is explored in the last chapter. Here the author examines potential biases and a framing study that looked at how several major U.S. newspapers covered the ID-evolution debate. The appendixes include names in the news, a time line of the major court cases, and a time line of media moments in the debate, and resources and references. This is a very specialized resource, but the historical information could be used in basic research of both ID and evolution. Court cases involving the use of ID in schools will be helpful to those involved in debate or the writing of research or policy papers.
