‘In seeking to understand death, we are seeking to understand life.’

Bianca Nogrady, an accomplished science journalist, began this book partly as a quest to try to find answers she had to some questions about her grandmother’s experience of death. Ms Nogrady’s investigation has led her to investigate culture, ethics, history, medicine, philosophy and science. Her assumption is that the more we know about death and the process of dying, the less we will have to fear from it. The question ‘Why do we have to die?’ is one which Ms Nogrady sees as having two parts: ‘Why can’t we live forever?’ and ‘Why don’t we live forever?’

‘It would be easy if we could pinpoint a single, universal moment that delineates the point of transition between life and death, but the reality is quite the opposite.’

The book examines some of the myths associated with popular ideas about death, includes some accounts from those who returned from the brink of death, and notes that there can be no firsthand experience of death. One of the big challenges is defining death, which Ms Nogrady illustrates by recounting the ancient parable of how six blind men each have different experiences of their encounter with an elephant. One elephant, six very different experiences. Medical advances, especially in the field of intensive care, over the past one hundred and fifty years have complicated the business of dying by altering the parameters seen as defining life. Death is better described as a process than as an event.

‘In modern medicine, death is the enemy, and if a patient dies it’s tantamount to failure.’

Ms Nogrady explains complex processes (such as whole brain death versus brain stem death, and the importance of each) clearly. The issues around defining death now have a medico-legal significance that can complicate an individual’s choices and preferences immeasurably.

Thinking about death is, for many of us, difficult. We have our own notions about what constitutes ‘a good death’, our own beliefs about what will happen afterwards. In this book, Ms Nogrady explores our understanding of death from a number of different aspects, including opinions from medical experts, from those who have survived near-death experiences, from those who counsel and support the dying and their families. It’s a well written book which provides both a lot of worthwhile information and plenty of food for thought. I’m glad I read it.

Lots of information on a topic usually shied away from by most of us. Death is part of life and we need to prepare to deal with it - for facing the loss of family and friends and making the most of our own death if we are able to.

Gets you thinking about The End

No matter how healthy we are, the truth is we all have a use by date. Bianca challenges us to confront dying the same way we plan for the birth of children. There are a number of things we should think about, from planning a will, thinking about what happen to us emotionally when we face our final hours, and what happens to us as we die. The question of when someone is dead is an especially thorny one.

It covers a great range of topics, although the last section on spirituality focus more on the Christian and Buddhist aspects. For a general book that's understandable. My only other criticism is that it can be a little choppy in parts, but you get used to this fairly quickly.

Overall, a great easy read and well worth a read whether you're facing 'The End' or not.

Der Gesamtgruppe der Entwicklungsländer räumt die EU in Konformität mit den WTO-Verträgen, die eine Sonderbehandlung von Entwicklungsländern legitimieren, besondere Marktzugangsbedingungen ein. Diese besonderen Marktzugangsbedingungen werden in dem sogenannten Allgemeinen Präferenzsystem (APS) evident. Den Least Developed Countries (LDC), also den ärmsten Ländern der Erde, werden im Rahmen der „Everything-but-arms-Initiative“ (EBA) weitergehende Präferenzen in Form von zoll- und quotenfreiem Zugang zu den Märkten der EU gewährt (vgl. Valqi, 2005, S.7). Ausgenommen von der EBA-Initiative sind die Agrarprodukte Bananen, Reis und Zucker, denen allerdings bis zum Jahr 2009 spätestens zoll-und quotenfreier Marktzugang gewährt werden soll (vgl. McQueen, 2002, S.101-102). Entwicklungshistorisch durch die koloniale Vergangenheit einiger europäischer Staaten erklärbar, hat die EU darüber hinaus ein spezielles Präferenzsystem für 78 Staaten Afrikas, der Karibik und des pazifischen Raums (AKP) geschaffen. Die AKP-Staatengruppe setzt sich sowohl aus Entwicklungsländern als auch aus LDCs zusammen. Dieses spezielle Präferenzsystem sieht handelsvertraglich eine bevorzugte Behandlung der AKP-Staaten im Vergleich zu der Gesamtgruppe der Entwicklungsländer vor. Jedoch sind die Präferenzen der AKP-Staaten weniger weitgehend als diejenigen unter der EBA-Initiative für die LDCs (vgl. Valqi, 2005, S.7). Diese von der EU gewährten nicht-reziproken Handelspräferenzen für AKP-Staaten verstoßen gegen geltendes WTO-Recht (vgl. Meyn, 2005a, S.12). Das zwischen der EU und den AKP-Staaten im Jahr 2000 ausgehandelte Cotonou-Abkommen musste also die Handelsbeziehungen zwischen der EU und den AKP-Staaten auf eine neue, mit dem WTO-Recht konforme Grundlage stellen. Hinzu kommt, dass die Vorläufer des Cotonou Abkommens (Lomé 1-4) entwicklungspolitisch keine Impulse setzen konnten. In dem Zeitraum 1975-2000 hat sich der Anteil der Exporte aus den AKP-Staaten an den Einfuhren in die EU etwa halbiert (vgl. Meyn, 2005a, S.11). Noch immer dominieren Primärgüter und Rohstoffe das Exportportfolio der AKP-Staaten und auch die sogenannten supply-side constraints, also interne Entwicklungshindernisse, konnten durch die Vorläufer des Cotonou Abkommens nicht beseitigt werden. Natürlich erwartete man von der Erweiterung eine positive wirtschaftliche Entwicklung. Die Beitrittsländer erhofften sich mehr Investitionskraft durch die Transferzahlungen der EU, eine Öffnung des EU-Binnenmarktes und damit wirtschaftliches Wachstum, die alten EU-Staaten bessere Exportmöglichkeiten in die neue EU. Jedoch gab und gibt es auch kritische Stimmen. Bauern und andere Selbständige in den Beitrittsländern fürchteten, mit den hoch automatisierten Betrieben der alten EU nicht konkurrieren zu können und ihre Selbständigkeit zu verlieren. In den alten EU-Staaten wurde dagegen befürchtet, dass vor allem das produzierende Gewerbe Stellen an den heimischen Standorten abbauen, in den neuen EU-Staaten die billigen Lohnkosten nutzen und Teile ihrer Produktion dorthin verlegen.

Kurd Laßwitz wurde in Breslau als Sohn von Karl Wilhelm Laßwitz geboren, einem Fabrikanten und Eisengroßhändler, der zeitweise Abgeordneter des Preußischen Abgeordnetenhauses war. In seinem Geburtsort sowie in Berlin besuchte er die Universität, studierte Mathematik und Physik, promovierte 1873 "magna cum laude" mit einer Arbeit "über Tropfen, welche an festen Körpern hängen und der Schwerkraft unterworfen sind" und legte im Folgejahr das Staatsexamen für den höheren Schuldienst in den Fächern Mathematik, Physik, Philosophie und Geographie ab.

1876 nahm er eine Stelle als Gymnasiallehrer am Ernestinum in Gotha an, wo er unter anderem Hans Dominik unterrichtete. 1884 erfolgte die laufbahn-übliche Ernennung zum Gymnasialprofessor und 1909 zum Hofrat. Letzteres verdankt er besonders seinem Wirken in der bildungsbürgerlichen "Mittwochsgesellschaft zu Gotha", die mit populären Vorträgen aus dem Bereich von Naturwissenschaft, Literatur und Philosophie zur Volksbildung beitrug. Die Mittwochsgesellschaft war 1884 gegründet worden, wesentlich initiiert von Laßwitz selbst.

Kurd Laßwitz starb im Alter von 62 Jahren in Gotha, wo er auf dem Hauptfriedhof in einem von der Stadt gepflegten Ehrengrab ruht.

Written immediately after the end of World War II, this morally complex Holocaust memoir is notable for its exact depiction of the grim details of life in Warsaw under the Nazi occupation. "Things you hardly noticed before took on enormous significance: a comfortable, solid armchair, the soothing look of a white-tiled stove," writes Wladyslaw Szpilman, a pianist for Polish radio when the Germans invaded. His mother's insistence on laying the table with clean linen for their midday meal, even as conditions for Jews worsened daily, makes palpable the Holocaust's abstract horror. Arbitrarily removed from the transport that took his family to certain death, Szpilman does not deny the "animal fear" that led him to seize this chance for escape, nor does he cheapen his emotions by belaboring them. Yet his cool prose contains plenty of biting rage, mostly buried in scathing asides (a Jewish doctor spared consignment to "the most wonderful of all gas chambers," for example). Szpilman found compassion in unlikely people, including a German officer who brought food and warm clothing to his hiding place during the war's last days. Extracts from the officer's wartime diary (added to this new edition), with their expressions of outrage at his fellow soldiers' behavior, remind us to be wary of general condemnation of any group. --Wendy Smith

Originally published in Poland in 1945 but then suppressed by the Communist authorities, this memoir of survival in the Warsaw Ghetto joins the ranks of Holocaust memoirs notable as much for their literary value as for their historical significance. Szpilman, a Jewish classical pianist, played the last live music broadcast from Warsaw before Polish Radio went off the air in September 1939 because of the German invasion. In a tone that is at once dispassionate and immediate, Szpilman relates the horrors of life inside the ghetto. But his book is distinguished by the dazzling clarity he brings to the banalities of ghetto life, especially the eerie normalcy of some social relations amid catastrophic upheaval. He shows how Jewish residents of the Polish capital adjusted to life under the occupation: "The armbands branding us as Jews did not bother us, because we were all wearing them, and after some time living in the ghetto I realized that I had become thoroughly used to them." Using a reporter's powers of description, Szpilman, who is still alive at the age of 88, records the chilling conversations that took place as Jews waited to be transported to their deaths. "We're not heroes!" he recalls his father saying. "We're perfectly ordinary people, which is why we prefer to risk hoping for that 10 per cent chance of living." In a twist that exemplifies how this book will make readers look again at a history they thought they knew, he details how a German captain saved his life. Employing language that has more in common with the understatement of Primo Levi than with the moral urgency of Elie Wiesel, Szpilman is a remarkably lucid observer and chronicler of how, while his family perished, he survived thanks to a combination of resourcefulness and chance. Written and published in a short run in Poland soon after the war, this first translation maintains a freshness of experience lacking in many later, more ruminative Holocaust memoirs.

An Unforgettable Story of Survival

The Pianist is a moving eye-witness account of one man's survival in Nazi-occupied Warsaw. Wladyslaw Szpilman--a Jew and famed pianist for Polish Radio--relates his memories of the unutterable and unrelenting horrors of the Holocaust in Warsaw--the random executions, starving children, mass deportations--with a sober, almost uncanny detachment. And though the machinery of extermination is all around him, he somehow evades his pursuers through friends willing to risk their lives to hide him. His father, mother, two sisters and a brother are all deported and sent to their deaths in concentration camp. And, when it appears, near war's end, that he is at the end of luck, trying to still keep himself concealed in a part of Warsaw that his been systematically destroyed by the Germans, he finds an unexpected saviour: Wilm Hosenfeld, a German Army captain who, rather than kill Szpilman, provides him with a hiding place and necessities to kept him alive until the Soviet Army finally liberates the city. This slim volume written with in a kind of terse, no-nonsense style that will keep the reader riveted to each episode in Szpilman's incredible Odyssey, is probably one of the best books I have read in the area of Holocaust literature.

Living more than five years in hell

I read this excellent book, here in Brazil.This book is amazing.The author, a polish jew is hunted to be exterminated, by nazists.And this happens for more than five years.All his family is murdered.He has famine and even tries the suicide, one time.
About the Warsaw uprising, the author writes on page 186:"I was walking down a broad main road, once busy and full of trafic.There was not a single intact building as far as the eye could see.I kept having to walk round mountains of rubble, and was sometimes obliged to climb ovem tham as if they were scree slopes."
Again, on page 212, this book writes:"Numbers.More numbers.Of all three and a half Jews who once lived in Poland, two hundred and forty thousand survived the Nazi period.Anti-Semithism was flourishing long before the German invasion.Yet some three to four hundred thousand Poles risked their lives to save Jews.Of the sixteen thousand Aryans remembered in Yad Vashem, the central Jewish place of rememberance in Jerusalem, one third were Polish.Why work it out so accurately?Because everyone knows how horribly the infection of anti-semithism traditionally raged among "the Poles",but few know that at the same time no other nation hid so many Jews from he Nazis.If you hid a Jew in France, the penality was prison or a concentration camp, in Germany it cost you your life - but in Poland it cost the lives of your entire family."

Required Holocaust reading

I became interested in reading "The Pianist" after seeing the excellent movie, directed by Roman Polanski, that was based on the book. After thoroughly enjoying the movie, I had very high hopes for this tome, and I was not disappointed. This book is a stunner, bringing to life the horrific conditions and brutality that Wladyslaw Szpilman endured to survive six years of Nazi brutality in Warsaw, Poland.

What's truly amazing about this book is how Szpilman tells the story with a sense of detachment - the barbaric killing that he sees up close; his final moments with his family, when he realizes shortly after they are gone that will never see them again; his bearing witness to the piles and piles of corpses; and mindless executions for some minor infraction, etc. Szpilman writes it all in stunning, unforgettable prose. It baffles the mind how he was able to keep his wits about him and survive after suffering and witnessing such unspeakable horrors at the hands of such barbarians, and in the end his survival may well have hinged on the kindness of a Nazi Captain, Wilm Hosenfeld.

The fact that a Nazi helped him live is too unbelievable to be fiction after all that Szpilman had witnessed and endured - it must be true, and this story is. The Pianist is a remarkable story that will be every bit as powerful hundreds of years from now. The Washington Post calls this book "historically indispensable," and that is right on the mark. The book sits along side Anne Frank's tome as required Holocaust reading.

Adding excerpts of Hosenfeld's diary at the end of the book makes this read all the more powerful. Hosenfeld's story is an amazing one, which reminded me of Oskar Schindler, since he, like Schindler, did much to save many Jews. Hosenfeld's diary entries in the back of the book add much to the story and torpedoes the assumption that every single Nazi had no heart and enjoyed the killings (although an overwhelming majority did, in this reviewer's opinion).

This book is invaluable to Holocaust scholars and World War II students alike. And since I watched the movie before I read the book, I can attest that the movie was right on the mark in terms of accuracy. Very highly recommended reading.

On 1 May the most recent act of Enlargement was finally fulfilled. Ten New Member States from Central and Eastern Europe joined the club and their residents officially became European citizens. The moment was all the more special for eight of the ten newcomers, as they were ruled with an iron fist behind the Iron Curtain for more than forty years. The accession represented the ultimate accolade for their arduous transition from central planned to market economies. The long history of an expanding united Europe thereby reached another peak - regarding cultural integrity, political influence and economic potency. Europhiles praised (lauded, acclaimed???) the EU’s greatest achievement so far. On the other hand, the EU Enlargement also encountered various feelings of skepticism or even disapproval throughout the population of Western Europe. Many people feared that “fortress Europe” would not hold and the walls of the Western social welfare states would be toppled (breached???) by millions of poor immigrants willing to work for extremely low wages and trying to maraud (infiltrate???) the Western welfare systems. Others were anxious that the Enlargement would induce a massive increase in FDI leading to an outsourcing of Western jobs into the East. Obviously the clash of two completely contrary positions raises multiple questions. Who is right? How many migrants can be expected to come, once the free movement of workers has been granted to them? How does the EU Enlargement really affect the Western economies and their labor markets in particular? Is there a threat of “welfare shopping” and, if there is any, what measures can the Western countries take in order to protect themselves from the Eastern menace? In this paper I will deal with these questions by first looking at the theoretical backgrounds and then seeking to support them with empirical findings in order to deduce some answers. In Chapter 2, after a brief overview of the main migration theories, I will examine the migration potential from the New Member States. Chapter 3 aims to provide a deeper insight into the economic and fiscal impact of immigrants on the German state. Chapter 4 deals with the “welfare magnets” hypothesis and provides an answer to the question whether immigrants really pose a threat to the Western welfare states. [...]
