Of Triton expands on the world of Of Poseidon, great read!

Of Triton starts off right where Of Poseidon left off. The first book did a lot of character and a bit of world building, and Of Triton gets right to the grit of things. It seems Galen knows that Emma's mother is actually the long lost Princess Nalia, who everyone thought died in the mine explosion, and turns out she thought Grom had died so she fled to live on land. I loved that we finally got to hear what brought her to land and how Emma came to be.

We learned how some of the laws work to the Syrena people, and honestly I got a little bored with the whole hearing to debate on whether or not Nalia is who they said she was. I think my frustrations with the characters involved bled over into my feelings for this situation.

I thought that Of Poseidon was a really fun read and a great start to a trilogy. However, It didn't come across as very in depth and developed, so I'm glad to see that Of Triton expands on the world and characters a bit. Seeing more of the underwater world and the other Syrena characters really helped advance the storyline and give me a peek into this world. Things were intense at times, dramatic and times and even touching. It definitely didn't feel like the second book in a trilogy.

The ending wasn't as OMG as the first book, but still leaves the story open for the third book in the series, Of Neptune.

Epicly Great!!!

I gave this book a 5 star review because A) it had romance, B) adventurous and action combined into one, and C) it was with mermaids!! And who doesn't love mermaids, right? I have to say though I cried a little because of all the drama and excitement! Loved the book and sad that it's over!

In a word: Boring

Okay, let me begin by saying that while the book was hardly Shakespeare, I did enjoy Of Poseidon, the first in this series. It had lots of sexism, was as shallow as a teaspoon, but it was also fun. And it was my first foray into the murky waters of the merfolk - know as Syrenas in this series. So I was looking forward to a similar swim with Of Triton.

Umph . . . I wish I could say the book delivered, but somehow it fell short.

The first part, where Emma and her mom are on the run from Galen and the other Syrenas was exciting enough, but once discovered, the book quickly spiralled down into two star read for me. I found Emma whiny and childish. (She freely admits to this, but that doesn't make her any more endearing) Galen lacked his usual sexist charm. (If you can call it charm) And the story very soon became bogged down with an under-water tribunal at which the two royal houses are on trial. Instead of keeping me hanging onto the edge of my coral with courtroom drama, I found it quite boring.

Added to that, we have a wonderful cliche thrown into the mix . . . a special gift, lost for eons to the house of Poseidon, miraculously appears in two of the characters - just in time to save the day. Also the ending, which should have been really exciting, just felt forced and flat - as if Anna Banks was trying to tie up loose ends.

The only surprise in this book - a very unexpected one - was the death of a major character. I'll give Anna Banks her due, I didn't see it coming. That twist lifted the book from awful to okay. What does it say about me that it takes a death to change my mind? I think that will have to be the subject of a another post on another day. . .

I see on Goodreads that there is supposed to be a third book in this series: Of Neptune expected in 2014. I cannot for the life of me imagine what more Anna Banks can bleed from this story. (As previously pointed out, the plot was already as shallow as a teaspoon) I, for one, will not be reading it.

By the way, I bought this book myself off Amazon.

Anthea Bell is a freelance translator from French and German, and the winner of many translation awards. She has translated the entire Asterix series, with Derek Hockridge, and many adult novels, including W. G. Sebold's Austerlitz and a large selection of novellas and stories by Stefan Zweig. She has translated Kafka's The Castle for Oxford World's Classics.

Ritchie Robertson is the author and editor of many works of German and Austrian literature. Interpreting Freud

Regardless of how you feel about Freud's psychoanalytical theories about hysteria, you cannot deny the sheer imagination of his writing. His chronicle of the patient "Dora" and the interpretations he makes of her dreams offer up a strange mix of fact and fiction. This is an actual case study about a young girl who was treated by Freud for hysteria. The story that unfolds about her father, his lover and his lover's husband is quite compelling in and of itself, but when you add the dimensions of Freud's analysis it opens up so many possibilities about the motives driving each of the characters. Freud's insistence that every symptom experienced, phrase used or symbol dreamt is mere sexual euphemism can be distracting, but at the same time it leaves the reader open to discovering the interpretations Freud ignores. The more Freud attempts to analyse Dora the more obvious it becomes that there could be any number of interpretations made, depending on how far a leap you wish to make (and Freud certainly makes a few interesting ones).

The introduction included in this edition is very useful at providing some more context to the case study and the people mentioned in it. What is particularly insightful is the context it gives to Freud himself who, as narrator, is perhaps the most interesting character of all.

This case study is just as much about Freud as it is about `Dora'

The preface to this edition is gives a good ground work and sets the stage for the contextualization of the case study and the individuals therein. For me what came to the fore are Freud's' nature and the methodology he pursues, by way of his narrative, which shows another most interesting character, apart from Dora, which is Freud himself. Whether like him or loath him, this work should not be dismissed out hand, this is both an interesting and at times disturbing read.

For as Freud endeavours to evaluate Dora's `condition' it becomes more evident that there could be any number of explanations made, for the symptoms displayed, contingent upon how far that you wish to take your analysis and Freud was not one hold back in his presumptions.

"Bruce Bairnsfather (BB) was the most famous cartoonist of the First World War and his soldier characters Old Bill, Bert and Alf, faced with sardonic good humor everything that the Germans, the mud and their officers could throw at them. However, Bruce (known by some as ‘The Man Who Won the War’) never received the acclaim that he deserved for the morale boost that his cartoons gave to the troops at the front and to the people back at home. The 50th Anniversary of Bairnsfather’s death on 29 September 2009 offered an opportunity to redress the balance, and acknowledging it in combination with raising funds for Help for Heroes (H4H) seemed to be most appropriate.

The cartoons reproduced in this collection were originally drawn for The Bystander, a popular weekly magazine, in which they appeared each Tuesday throughout most of the Great War. Their effect on the public was totally unexpected, and so dramatic that Bystander sales soared. The organization, with unerring good judgement, decided it had a winner in Bairnsfather, and published the first 43 of his cartoons in an anthology. It was produced in February 1916, given the name Fragments from France and sold for 1s. On the front cover was a colored print of The Better ‘Ole which soon became, and was to remain, the most loved of all Bairnsfather’s cartoons. The authors own the original. Sales quickly reached a quarter of a million and a second anthology was published, More Fragments from France. It was described on the title page as ‘Vol II’ and the price was still 1s. The cartoon on the cover was 'What time do they feed the sea lions'?

In this volume The Bystander launched the first of a series of imaginative marketing exercises, similar to modern promotional methods. The full extent of the proliferation of the cartoons on all manner of products, from playing cards to pottery, is described in our Bairnsfather biography. Soon Still More Fragments from France were clamored for, and, with an eye to the future, the booklet was labeled No. 3 on the cover, Vol III on the title page. The success of the Fragments magazines was such that edition followed edition in rapid succession and at least eleven editions were published. The covers retained the same cartoon but were reproduced in different colors, both of board and ink — green, blue, red, grey, fawn and mauve. In America Putnam’s issued Nos. I-IV as one volume and parts V and VI separately. Various hard and leather-bound collections were offered for sale by The Bystander, and the drawings were sold separately as prints and “Portfolios” for framing. They were also printed in color as giveaways for Answers magazine. Leafing through these pages, the reader will soon understand their tremendous popularity and success which have withstood the test of time."

About the Author
Brian Hahn graduated from the University of Cape Town before obtaining a PhD from Cambridge in high energy physics. He lectured in Applied Mathematics at the University of the Witwatersrand for a number of years before moving to Cape Town. He is an associate professor (and Head of Department) in Mathematics & Applied Mathematics at the University of Cape Town, where he has specialised in teaching programming languages to beginners for more than 20 years. He has written a number of popular computing books, on Fortran 77 and 90, GW-BASIC, True BASIC, Turbo Pascal, C++, Matlab and, most recently, Java. When not writing a new book, he carries out research in rangeland modelling. Spare time activies include birding, jogging, and planting indigenous trees on the small holding he shares with his wife and numerous german shepherd dogs. A fantastic book for renewing oneself to Fortran 90

It has been many years since I did Fortran programming, but once I decided to get involved for professional reasons, this was an excellent choice.
The author slowly and extremely methodically exposes the reader to the Fortran 90 language with what I will coin "computational motivation." Simply stated, just when the chapter gets you thinking about "how to...", BANG, Brian Hahn begins to address that very issue with source code and explanations! I cannot say enough about this book for the beginner or intermediate level Fortran programmer. Please, do yourself an enormous favor if you are interested in using this extremely powerful (and fairly simple!) numerical language for engineering, science, applied mathematics and even financials...take a look at this text on the subject!!

About the Author
Robert B. Banks (1922-2002) was Professor of Engineering at Northwestern University and Dean of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He served with the Ford Foundation in Mexico City and with the Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok. He won numerous national and international honors, including being named Commander of the Order of the White Elephant by the King of Thailand and Commandeur dans l'Ordre des Palmes Academiques by the government of France. He is the author of Slicing Pizzas, Racing Turtles, and Further Adventures in Applied Mathematics (Princeton).

So much fun, so little time.

Applied mathematics to a wide range of events and phenomena. This is a lot of fun to read and to stimulate the interest in the subject both to the young reader and to the adult.

A Supplement to a Mathematics for Physicists/Scientists College Course

While the content is interesting, it tends to be too detailed, way too many equations, and lacking in explanations of how the equations morph into meaningful numerical results. For example, more explanation should go to why a smooth ball has more drag than a dimpled one, rather than just saying the coefficient of friction differs between the two types of ball. I intend to finish the book real soon, but have other things to read...
