Oktober 1990 ein gemeinsames Bundesland. Historisch betrachtet sind beide Landesteile erst seit Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges ein gemeinsames Land.
In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern findet sich heute fast alles, was zu einem richtigen deutschen Bundesland gehört und oftmals noch viel mehr. So verfügt dieses Land gleich über vier Hansestädte: Rostock, Wismar, Stralsund und Greifswald, über welche schon seit dem Mittelalter Geschäfte abgewickelt wurden. Weiter gibt es hier unzählige Seen sowie die längste Küste Deutschlands mit breiten Sandstränden. Trotzdem existieren in diesem Bundesland unzählige Probleme, wie beispielsweise eine nicht EG-gerecht produzierende Landwirtschaft, eine geringe industrielle Ausstattung, zu wenig Einwohner oder ein zu geringes Bruttosozialprodukt.
Der ehemalige Ministerpräsident von Niedersachsen, äußerte sich zur gegenwärtigen und zukünftigen Situation Mecklenburg-Vorpommerns wie folgt: „ Wird dieses arme, aber schöne Land im östlichen Norden Deutschlands begreifen, dass der größte Reichtum des Landes das Land selbst ist? Oder wird der Weg alles Irdischen beschritten, für ein Stück kurzfristigen Wohlstandes die Grundlagen der langfristigen Existenz zu gefährden?“
In dieser Hausarbeit wird versucht die Entwicklung dieses am nordöstlichsten gelegenen deutschen Bundeslandes, von der Vergangenheit bis in die Gegenwart aufzuzeigen, ebenso wie eine Verbindung dieser Epochen herzustellen. Dieses schien, in Anbetracht der Tatsache, dass sich viele der heutigen Probleme auf die Situation der Vergangenheit zurückführen lassen, sinnvoll. Ebenso wie eine Analyse der naturräumlichen Gegebenheiten sowie ein Aufzeigen der potentiellen Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten, aber auch der Gefahren, welche damit verbunden sind.
