Aufgrund des breiten Spektrums und der Vielfalt an Studien, ist keine generell akzeptable Definition für Träume möglich. Aus dem Psychologischen Wörterbuch „Dorsch“ lässt sich eine allgemeine Definition für Träume entnehmen: „Traum lässt sich charakterisieren als besondere Form des Erlebens im Schlaf, häufig von lebhaften Bildern begleitet und oft mit intensiven Gefühlen verbunden, an die sich der Betroffene nach dem Erwachen meist nur teilweise erinnern kann.“
Nach Pagel, Blagrove, Levin, States, Stickgold und White (2001) sollten spezifische Definitionen in der Forschung verschiedene Achsen der Traumdefinition ansprechen: Wach-/Schlaf-Zustand, Traum-Abruf und Inhalt des Traumes. Solch ein Ansatz sei wichtig, um den Vergleich zwischen verschiedenen Disziplinen und Studien zu ermöglichen.
Es gibt weitere interessante Definitionen, die sich je nach Disziplin unterscheiden. In der Psychiatrie gibt es eine Definition von Stickgold (2001), die Träume als „bizarre oder halluzinatorische mentale Aktivität (…)“ beschreibt, „(...) die während eines Kontinuums an Schlaf- und Wachstadien einsetzt“. Krippner et al. (1994) beschreiben den Traum in der Psychologie als „(…) eine Serie von Bildern, die während des Schlafes auftritt und oft verbal berichtet wird“. Hobson, ein bekannter Vertreter der Neuropsychologie, beschreibt den Traum als „(…) a form of madness“.
